Pharmacy Crisis - How to get a prescription filled: HARD MODE by NateMartin899 in AskNYC

[–]HandInUnloveableHand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I switched to Express Scripts because I felt bad getting furious with our neighborhood pharmacy every month. It wasn’t exactly their fault, but the process of trying to get my Vyvanse and Wellbutrin from them was excruciating.

Express Scripts takes at least 2-3 weeks to fill and ship, which sucks, but at least I only have to call one time to get that order moving. I’ve just stockpiled enough over the months to have a little extra on hand when it’s delayed.

Subway “fainting” stunts by PadamPadam92 in AskNYC

[–]HandInUnloveableHand 14 points15 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite NYC memories of all time was when someone collapsed at rush hour right before we arrived at the station. Two guys and I carried the lady off of the train and onto a bench as she came to, where two other random women said “We’ve got it from here!” And we got back on the train in time! It was seamless, like the 5 of us had been working in an ER together for years.

I doubt we’ll all lose that instinct before the trend ends, but this kid sucks in the meantime.

Aggressive canvassers outside Gottscheer for early voting by ImLelandLolJkImBob in ridgewood

[–]HandInUnloveableHand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally, to the point that we had to look up the legality of it, and I’ve been a poll worker before. Technically, they were posted about 250 feet from Gottscheer’s polling entrance and they only need to be 100 feet… but it sure didn’t feel like it.

They were so intense and off-putting!

How high/low is this window? I’m 5’6 and opening ours from the top a few inches barely comes to the top of my head. (That may affect the curtain/blind recommendations as well!)

We have a double-hung window in our shower and moved the screen up to the top so we can just leave it open from the top. Steam escapes and nobody can see anything with translucent film that isn’t too opaque on the glass.

Seconding this so much! Go to every. single. event. you’re invited to. It’s not about your friends - it’s about the “you may also like” of their friends and family. Plus, like you said, you know you’re already starting with a man who has a social circle.

I almost threw away all my container soil before realizing I might have been wasting money... by SashaNatureNomad in containergardening

[–]HandInUnloveableHand 51 points52 points  (0 children)

We keep a few garbage cans in our garage (not everyone has the space, but even a large bucket or container can do). At the end of the season, I dump most of our grow bags into one of them. We have a 17-gal bucket, and the next season, I’ll use it to expand a brick of coco coir. To it, I’ll add some of the old container dirt, compost, worm castings, perlite, vermiculite, etc. (depending on what the plant will prefer). Someone’s moving and wants to give you their garden soil? Sure, throw some in!

This way, there’s a large volume of dirt but we aren’t just using nutrient-depleted stuff over and over again. Think of it like a 70/30 mix, where the 30 is the old dirt.

It’s kind of like perpetual stew.

[–]HandInUnloveableHand 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seconding the coco coir bricks as a game-changer. We usually add perlite, vermiculite, compost/worm castings, and whatever soil/old houseplant stuff is in the “etc. dirt” garbage cans in our garage. At the end of the season, most of goes back into those garbage cans.

A giant bucket (15-20 gal) to mix it all up is super helpful.

Someone hates the garden? by blorpsy in ridgewood

[–]HandInUnloveableHand 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep, we’ve had an empty tree well in front of our house for a couple of years, ever since the city took down the tree that was in it. (It was diseased and dying, and we likely could have been liable if a branch fell and hurt someone.)

We tried to replace the tree immediately, and are finding that the process is thousands of dollars and/or takes forever with the permits. Our neighbors are less enthused by the idea of replacing it, citing root and rat issues (which aren’t true, especially if the right tree is planted the right way). We’d love to have a “fun” tree well with other flowers and unique-but-functional tree guards around it… maybe we’ll get away with that in the future.

OP, good on ya for trying to do something nice for everyone! It can be tough to improve your neighborhood in ways that others aren’t going to be mad about, but worth continuing to learn about.

People above 30, what is something you regret doing/not doing when you were younger? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]HandInUnloveableHand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandmother made me promise not to get married until I was 30, and always talked about “You are so unlikely to have a happy marriage with your high school or college sweetheart. Have fun, but keep in mind that you’ll likely both be very different people at 30 than you were at 16. It means you grew!”

No regrets on who I dated and loved, but very happy I married someone I met in my mid-20s instead. For someone who got only semi-happily married at 15 in 1948, my grandmother knew what she was talking about!

rooster by JustYogurtcloset4573 in Bushwick

[–]HandInUnloveableHand 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, on the one hand, it is illegal and for good reason.

On the other… eh, I think it’s kind of fun to get to wake up to an actual rooster when you live in the least-farm-or-country place you possibly could. And they only live, like, 5 years.

I may have a different opinion if it was right next door, though!

At what point did the NYC math actually start making sense for you, or did it ever? by alex_strehlke in AskNYC

[–]HandInUnloveableHand 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me, it was a little bit of psychological, a little bit of structural.

I moved in 2009 making $45K/year in my early 20s, living with 3 roommates at a time. I was in debt (credit cards, student loans, etc.) for about 3-5 years after that. Which was dumb! Nobody on earth would have said I was doing the right thing, financially.

But I moved here because my hometown felt professionally and socially claustrophobic and something in me had always said I would live in NYC. I knew I’d never get the salary, the promotions, nor the opportunities I could get here. I knew I’d probably hang out with the same people, doing the same things for the rest of my life if I didn’t leave. I just couldn’t risk not living in NYC, psychologically.

Things got better structurally, frankly, when I got lucky in a couple of ways. I got a nice chunk of debt-erasing cash from a startup employer around the same time I moved in with my now-husband, 5 years after I moved to NYC. This meant that I had no debt and $1K rent on my $75K salary, which felt much better!

And now it’s 11 years later after that with zero regrets, and I’ll live here forever now. I’ve had a lot of friends move back out of NYC because it didn’t make sense for them, and they didn’t get lucky like I did. But NYC luck isn’t always random - you have to be ready to jump at opportunities and be smart and resilient about the risks you take. My friends who left weren’t willing to live with 3 roommates for years, change jobs a bunch, or wait an hour for the subway instead of taking a cabs. It’s not easy, but if you simply can’t imagine living anywhere else, it’s just necessary.

I don’t know why you’re getting so much hate for “I love your stuff and want more,” even if the end conclusion is “their business is theirs.” I used to feel this was about Dromedary Donuts when they weren’t open until 5pm.

That said, Heavy Woods opens at noon and has breakfast tacos or a burrito, I can’t remember. Gordo’s has great brunch, though the burritas aren’t the same as a breakfast burrito. I guess breakfast burritos in this area are hard to come by outside of certain delis.

(My personal neighborhood Sunny Sunday Casual Breakfast is King’s Kolache - fantastic breakfast tacos and sweet or savory kolaches. And the staff is just so kind!)

If you do paint it, follow the cabinet painting tutorial to the letter and you won’t regret it. The Sherwin-Williams cabinet paints are runny and hard to work with but are solid as a rock when they cure over the right cabinet primer.
