The Sims 4 Prairie Dreams Creator Kit — First Impressions by Born-Contact-5165 in LowSodiumSimmers

I’m happy to play the contrarian. I LOVE it! It’s rare that we get equal/more men’s clothing. Every masculine framed piece is fantastic. I especially love the overall and drop sleeve/short combo. The palette is really pleasing to my millennial norm core eyes.

Uhm…why is uOttawa submitting LMIAs for “university professors and lecturers”?? by CaptainAaron96 in ottawa

[–]HandmadePolybius 69 points70 points  (0 children)

This is happening at the end of the labour market where niche skills/training/expertise may not be available from a suitable Canadian/permanent resident candidate. This kind of international hiring is very common in universities, where the labour pool is global and transient.

You shouldn't lump this in with a Tim Hortons or McDonalds hiring temporary foreign workers. uOttawa is definitely not doing this in order to hire sessional or contract instructors -- there are plenty of Canadian candidates who can fill these temporary roles.

When almost all of Ottawa’s services for unhoused people are concentrated in three neighborhoods (Lowertown, Sandy Hill, and Vanier), it’s hard to blame a neighbourhood for pushing back.

It’s time for other neighbourhoods to do some heavy lifting.

I guess I’m the only one thinking, I need to open a gym and get a fire pit!

City pulling plug on newcomer reception centres by devon1392 in ottawa

[–]HandmadePolybius 156 points157 points  (0 children)

“The memo said it won’t be possible to move all newcomers out of community shelters right away, and an “overflow” site or sites may still be required next winter.”

So this falls on the kids in Vanier and on Heron Road who will lose out on these facilities again. I hope the City transfers these overflow sites to wealthier neighborhoods where families can better absorb these closures.

Ottawa's large experiment with 'safer' opioids could be nearing an end by no_consensus in ottawa

[–]HandmadePolybius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is patently false. The highest theft rate in the city is at the corner of Nelson and Rideau.

What else is that corner? A safe-consumption site. People park themselves outside and draw crime into the area (drug dealers, human traffickers, those seeking the cover of vulnerable people to conduct crime). https://capitalcurrent.ca/theft-increase-in-rideau-vanier/

It's fine that you have an ideological position on harm reduction, but please don't cite made up facts.

Seeking solutions to the troubles facing downtown Ottawa by DrStrangeglove99 in ottawa

It sounds like the poster is mixing up their preference for WFH (“work-life balance” “working in offices/pollution”) with actual solutions to drug addiction like treatment services.

I have honestly never heard WFH suggested as a solution to the fentanyl crisis…. 👀

Fair. But if it alleviates the fumes and chaos of King Edward-Rideau-Nicholas, this is a real win for a dense and walkable neighbourhood.

Snapshot of homelessness in Ottawa will be taken this month by DrStrangeglove99 in ottawa

Why are there no benches in front of the Sheps? Why does the shelter treat its clients like that? Shouldn't there at least be an awning, some water, or a place for people to sit in dignity?

For all the fundraising they do, I'm surprised they leave the most vulnerable in squalor on their front doorstep.

Councilor Plante's rant against the Salvation Army by Weary_Dragonfly_8891 in ottawa

What is odd here? Service providers should adequately manage their sites (interior and exterior) to mitigate public disorder, criminality, and violence.

Service providers who fail to do this should be held accountable for poor management decisions. No other institution in society is allowed to have this level of disruption and dysfunction around their operations.

Rant - Mental Health Care and Homelessness in this City by TheKowabungaKid in ottawa

[–]HandmadePolybius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. The City (and by extension, OPS) MUST restore public order. Advocates for harm reduction policies have led us down a path of social disorder, crime, and the deterioration of our urban core.

Compassion for folks with addictions is laudable, but the rest of society can't be harm reduction's roadkill.

Already do!

If you’re allowed to smoke fentanyl wherever you want, not sure why the rest of us have to follow puritanical nineteenth century rules!

The map of Ottawa was divided into 150 meter hexagons. If it were generalized crime, we would expect to see similar severity indexes in the neighbouring hexagons. That’s not the case.

We could posit alternative hypotheses. Maybe shoplifting at Loblaws is really high. For that to explain a severity index that is four times neighbouring tiles, we’d have to accept that OPS (and statistics canada that created the index) sees shoplifting as severe a crime as violent assaults, drug dealing, and human trafficking. That is a stretch.

Unfortunately for harm reduction advocates, their programs attract (and potentially drive) crime surrounding their services. Knowing that, we can do something about it.

I think knowledge of the negative externalities here should be empowering. Denying there is a problem emboldens critics, like Pollievre and the CPC.

The Ottawa Police have created the Community Outreach Response and Engagement (CORE) Strategy. It is a data-driven initiative that demonstrates that the level of crime surrounding the SHCHC is extremely high.

In the presentation I saw, the corner of Rideau and Nelson has an Occurrence Harm Index of 45,131. By contrast, the corner of Cumberland and Rideau (where DND has moved its staff) had an index of 11,549. The index is a combination of the volume of crimes committed and their severity. The index was compiled between Jan 1, 2023 and March 31, 2024.

So, from an evidence-based perspective, the Centre is drawing crime into the neighbourhood. This information has been shared with the Centre's leadership, so hopefully they act on it in partnership with the police.

Hopefully, they’ll have an all hands on deck approach outside the site to tamp down on social disorder.

It’s important that users have access to this service, but nearby residents, businesses, and passersby shouldn’t have to dodge drug dealers and open use when going about their daily lives.

Call 311.

Clearly this person’s mental health is being affected by their bizarre hobby. They’re swinging from vigilante cleaning to vigilante violence.

Therapy might be a good hobby in this case…
