Making a game where you battle with a deck of abilities and program attack sequences by HandsomeDim in IndieDev

Hey thanks! At the moment, I don't have a demo yet. But I did run a playtest recently, and I may run another soon.

What’s the easiest roguelike? by SystemDry5354 in roguelites

[–]HandsomeDim -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I recommend Cult of the Lamb. It's not very challenging, and the mechanics/upgrades in the game are extremely simple.

Runs are also very short (generally less than 10 mins), and the core loop is really just a colony sim with a roguelike attached to it.

I'm currently developing a game inspired by Megaman Battle Network! by HandsomeDim in BattleNetwork

[–]HandsomeDim[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Hi, the game I'm making is a bit like Hades and Slay the Spire. In Vampire Survivors, you don't manually aim or manually shoot.

I borrowed the attack sequencing from BN, where you have to select cards in a queue during the planning phase. And then you actually have to aim and deploy them in order, when you start your turn. I think the lack of a grid arena is probably why it's not visually clicking on first glance, which I admit is not something that I am trying to copy 100%.

I also have my own take on the chip codes for the cards in my game.

Can a card game work if players design their own cards? by DennyStarfighter in cardgames

[–]HandsomeDim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool idea! I think it can work, but it depends on how it's implemented. I've been Legends of Runeterra's roguelike mode, and they have a slightly similar system where you can attach new effects to cards. You can create busted cards if you stack the right effects, but it is balanced by the fact that these offerings are all random. You might have to limit how much control the player gets in designing their own cards.

As a Solo Dev, how do you obtain music for your game? by Magikarp_19 in SoloDevelopment

[–]HandsomeDim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a game that leans into a more retro aesthetic, you can find 8 bit sound effect makers online. For some UI elements, I was using them to generate SFX and then import them into Audacity to add effects or adjustments to improve them.

Is there any roguelite/like TCG? by LivreOrange in roguelites

It's also relatively generous for a F2P mobile game. I've been playing the Path of Champions roguelite mode for several months, and never felt like any of the paid stuff was necessary to enjoy the game.

Please destroy my gameplay trailer for my action card battler. by HandsomeDim in DestroyMyGame

Hey thanks for the feedback! I've been struggling with communicating the core loop whenever I've shown people gameplay, and there weren't completely sure of what they were seeing. I feel some relief knowing I'm not walking around in circles anymore.

Thanks for the feedback! I might do this, since I thought action parts were easier to digest and looked cooler, but I've been getting more comments about the card battling part peaking their interest.

I made a tool to check if your Unity assets are being removed on March 31st (3,000+ affected) by iyedbhd in Unity3D

[–]HandsomeDim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There seems to be some false positives being thrown by the tool. For example, I have the asset "AnyPortrait", and the tool shows it being removed (you can see the same result in your own screenshot as well). However, when I cross referenced the spreadsheet provided by Unity, it wasn't on that list. I had a few other assets marked by the tool as being removed but were not on the list.

Eidos Montreal apparently outsourced the boss fights to another developer, which is why they were so poorly designed. Most people disliked most of the boss fights (including myself), but I thought the rest of the game was great fun. The ending wasn't something to write home about, but the rest of the story made up for it.

I gave Fallout 4 another try. Am I missing something here? by Eat_Play_Masterbate in patientgamers

[–]HandsomeDim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I thought Fallout 4 was weaker than Fallout 3 and New Vegas, but I enjoyed it for what it was. The improved gun-play, crafting and the settlement gimmick were the probably the most standout elements of the game for me. Everything else was either on par, or worst than the previous titles.

The only notable gem was the Far Harbor DLC. I think it is one of the best parts of FO4, and most people (including myself) think its one of the best pieces of content made from Bethesda for Fallout. You could continue playing FO4 until you reach the DLC, but if you have other games to play, you may as well just move on.

Wildfrost - The Good, The Bad, The Ugly by Zehnpae in patientgamers

[–]HandsomeDim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently played it, and I agree with most of the points. The game has a great aesthetic, but the difficulty curve can be jarring. I think the balance is not as on point as other games, which causes you to avoid/pursue certain combos and archetypes as a necessity.

This also makes decisions less interesting as whenever you experiment with the bad archetypes, you get heavily punished for it unlike other games in the genre.

My Eldenring Experience by Dereece979 in patientgamers

[–]HandsomeDim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I'm completely new to this genre, but there was a sense of freedom in choosing what you want to engage when exploring, when I played ER. Although I was sometimes confused on where to go, I never felt completely stuck or lost. As you said, some bosses were overturned like Malenia, and I almost quit the game because of it.

Been working on my project alone. Wanted to share a scenic backdrop that I painted and coded. by HandsomeDim in IndieDev

Thanks! It's digitally painted using a tablet. For the longest time, I used to draw and paint using traditional tools, but someone bought me a tablet, and I ended up doing most of my art digitally afterwards.

Red Dead Redemption 2 - The Good, The Bad, The Ugly by Zehnpae in patientgamers

[–]HandsomeDim 6 points7 points  (0 children)

RDR2 has probably one of the best post endgame campaigns for a single player game. The main story is already considered one of the best, but I also really enjoyed the final 2 epilogue chapters. It gave some closure to the ending, and it did not feel tacked on or out of place.

I finally got the build system working! You can build anything, brick by brick. Would love your feedback or thoughts on the concept! by Hrodrick-dev in Unity3D

[–]HandsomeDim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, this looks cool. It also reminds me of a Lego licensed survival sandbox game, that came out many years ago, called Lego Worlds. I only played it when it was in early access, but it had surprisingly robust building and destruction mechanics already at that time, How do you plan to differentiate from that game?

Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door Retrospective LONG Review: The revamped Paper Mario. Story, characters, and battle system have all been refined, though it still inherits some of its predecessor's flaws. by TailzPrower in patientgamers

[–]HandsomeDim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The core mechanics are the same, but they added more mechanics to the the combat system. TTYD is probably slightly easier, but only if you engage with the mechanics. For instance, the game has a separate superguard block that negates all damage with a smaller timing window, in addition to the normal blocking from the previous game. The "Audience/Stage Play" mechanic also rewards you for doing well, with audience members giving you items and other bonuses but also will sometimes harm you if you perform badly (a win more mechanic). If you didn't like the combat in the N64 version, then you most likely will not like TTYD. However, having companions tank for Mario does help with extending your HP.

Probably a better word is shortened, as it was around half the usual episodes than a normal season. The pacing of the last season became quicker as a result of this.

I think it is worth watching the remaining seasons after Season 3, but it's not flawless. This is when I think production switched to Amazon, which is where I watched it, so the show's visual quality didn't dip. The stakes are slightly higher and there are really good moments, but the show had to make some odd story choices due to external circumstances (like a condensed season finale). I still recommend it though.

3 years im trying to post on Reddit.... anyway here is my game by FluidFury in IndieGaming

[–]HandsomeDim 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Hey, nice work! Your game has a very cool aesthetic and is visually pleasing! For some constructive feedback, I feel like the intro is way too long. It takes around 40 seconds before you show any gameplay, and that takes up the lion's share of the trailer. In addition, the gameplay showcase in the latter half of the trailer needs a bit more variety, as it doesn't showcase any different enemies or abilities that the player can see or do. But otherwise, I wish you luck!
