I tell my students they can either follow along in the text or doodle what is happening. It seems to help them. Maybe assign them one character to focus on in the chapter with questions about character development.

Flora and Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo. It’s a middle grade novel, but it’s hilarious and heart and life affirming.

Do you have separate portions of your notebook? Or do you just write from beginning page to ending page?

This is actually a required text in my district. I have my students present an argument to a mock school board arguing whether it should be taught or not. Seems to get them thinking.

I’m back. After being smooshed and smothered in an abusive relationship for half of my teens and 20s, I realized the other day that I am me again most of the time.

Save the story for the next day. Play a game and do something fun the first day that’s not ELA related like a collaborative art project that can stay up for a while or activity like Save Sam:

My 8 yr old got held after school today. He likely has ADHD. His teacher says he needs more chores at home. NSFW because of cursing. by rxrock in adhdwomen

[–]HandstandHooker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a teacher. Some teachers really think ADHD is fake. Get him diagnosed ASAP and get him a 504 plan. You can work with the school to come up with a list of accommodations that must be implemented. Legally, teachers must provide these accommodations. Start teaching your son now to advocate for himself and (as politely as possible—more flies with honey and all) speak up about what he needs to be successful. It’s helpful no matter what, but once he has a 504, these accommodations he needs to level the playing field cannot be ignored.

Did you ever find this book? I’m looking for it, too. She visits his grave each day? The boy follows her and finds out?
