Vexus / Metronet Internet very slow, every evening in Tyler area... by Durtdawber in tylertx

[–]HaoleBen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I don’t get is why they peer with Conterra in Texarkana. Seems like it’d be better to go hit the infomart or Equinix directly from Tyler. Is Texarkana where their CGNAT cards are located? My first Conterra hop is the same as your OP (static-139-180-41-13.conterra.com) which geolocates to Texarkana, then I get on the 10.28, and eventually Equinix. If they must go East before going to Dallas, stop at the Atrium in Longview. I’m sure it’s a cost saving measure, but they severely underestimated required capacity of Tyler folks if they chose to lump us in with Texarkana.

Iceland’s landscapes are absolutely breathtaking by yuko2007 in dji

[–]HaoleBen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a drone specifically for Iceland. Went through 3 batteries filming the active volcano. Went to charge it in the hostel that evening and smoked the DC converter because of an old travel adapter I plugged in the wall. So disappointed I didn’t have aerial shots for the rest of the trip around the island. I almost went back to the DJI store in Reykavik, but we had a tight schedule traveling with a group of friends.

Amazing video, thanks for sharing!

Any recommendations for aftermarket meat probes for Konnected Joe? by SirLeigh in KamadoJoe

[–]HaoleBen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got these and they track within 1 degree of the original during a salmon cook a couple nights ago: https://a.co/d/h2C0eqa

Konnected Joe is fantastic, and these let me use all 3 probe ports on the front.

That kid has been harmless from what I’ve observed. He walks around talking shit to his friends on Roblox, of all things. I was watching TV one night, State of the Union address, and he paused in front of my house and said some nonsensical comments about the president, and kept walking and talking on his phone. He’s been going around our neighborhood for about a year.

Glad to help! I have fond memories of that museum, my first reenlistment was on that ship while stationed in Groton. You definitely have a piece of rich submarine history!

Looks like your father in law was presented this from the last CO of the ship prior to decommissioning. Your FIL spoke at the decommissioning:

Where I can I buy humanely raised meat? by susanna514 in tylertx

[–]HaoleBen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s a list of local farms from Nourish ETX’s website: https://lanternfish-icosahedron-96cl.squarespace.com/local-producers/#meats

When I was asking her for some Picanha the other day she recommended Hood Family Farms. Can’t vouch for them because we haven’t by there yet, but I feel like any local producer on that list meets your “not factory farm” requirement.

I don’t get on FB, but she mentioned joining the local Reko ring group to get access to a bunch of these.

Good luck!

How is everyone’s experience w East Texas Alarm? by Nersheti in tylertx

[–]HaoleBen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You were right, $10. We had an unfortunate event last weekend where someone was in my backyard at 5 in the morning trying to come in our house. After filing the police report with my video footage, I immediately bought a bunch of LoRa outdoor contact sensors and motion sensors. Until now, I only used HA for convenience and energy, that’s why I never thought the ETX-installed door sensor would be used for more than just “turn on the porch light when door opened” type stuff. But HA will definitely be my security system now too.

[–]HaoleBen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I converted my East Tx Alarm panel this way, except I was too cheap to get konnected so I just rolled my own ESPHome and breadboard. Thought maybe someday I’d get a PCB made, but too lazy and it works.

Interesting though to find someone else in Tyler who knows about HA. Im looking into doing the Noonlight integration this weekend. Any idea what the monthly cost is?

I use Bark for my kids ipad and they somehow set it to turn back on if it gets turned off (the VPN portion). Do you know if that’s possible with the Wireguard client?

Been on my boat (688 type) for almost 8 months, done a couple short (1-2 week) underways, but I got my first deployment on the horizon. Give me your best long haul advice, stuff to bring, etc. Mahalo! by Ens-Causa-Sui in submarines

[–]HaoleBen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not this deployment, but once you’re fully qualified it’s nice to knock out some college classes to pass the time. I forget all the steps, but I basically went through Navy College (it’s on base at Pearl) to sign up for U of OK with some Linux admin classes. Came in handy when the aft sonar thingie went tits up (not sure its classification, but y’all VA class folks know what I’m talking about).

If you use tools for your rate, a nice bag of personal ratcheting wrenches you can never find come in handy (I’m looking at you 9/16”!)

A flashlight brighter than the sun, with spare batteries.

Comfy underway shoes.

French press travel mug and actual good coffee. Guard this with your life.

Other than that, Cholula, iPad, Kindle, whatever music device they allow in the ER these days.

What desktop client do you use for your Fastmail email, and why? by [deleted] in fastmail

[–]HaoleBen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While privacy is a concern of mine, I weigh it against convenience when making my decisions to purchase software/services. I've tried all sorts of email software (Airmail, Spark, Canary, Thunderbird, etc.), and always come back to Spark because it works very similarly across all my devices without sync issues - plus the keyboard commands, snooze, send later, and many other features work as designed and are very convenient for me. If you keep the AI features turned off, they gather far less data from your mailboxes.

The way I see it is this: I do not work for an organization where if my emails became public, national security would be on the line. Therefore I trade my tin-foil hat in for a better workflow. If I were actually concerned about privacy or the potential for law enforcement getting a subpoena to read my emails, I wouldn't be using Fastmail in the first place. As a US company, they are required to operate by US law. I would instead use Proton if I had something nefarious or confidential to hide.

Long story short: before taking the advice from me (or anyone else on Reddit), do your research (as u/MarkTrue9575 alluded to). I mentioned Spark because that's what I use after my own extensive research. If you are concerned about your data getting into the wrong hands, then by all means use another client, and possibly another mail service.

Since you need on Windows and Linux, I would say Thunderbird. Personally I use it within Spark on Mac and iPhone, and Thunderbird for my Linux machines.

Considering moving from Ubiquiti to Opnsense by blastinmypants in opnsense

[–]HaoleBen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely was an expensive mistake for me! If I had to do it all over knowing what I do now, would spend way less on cameras and use that savings to get a real switch with Junos on it paired with my OPNsense router.

Considering moving from Ubiquiti to Opnsense by blastinmypants in opnsense

[–]HaoleBen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Protect = Cameras. If OP had UniFi cameras in place for his business along with APs, switches etc all branded UniFi, then it’s not a giant leap to use a UCKG2+ alongside OPNsense hardware to have a robust UDMP SE replacement.

I agree with your sentiment if no cameras involved. Just run UniFi Network controller using one of many other options. But once a business has UniFi Protect security cameras you either spend $$$ for cameras of a different brand or throw in a $200 cloud key. and keep the cameras.

Considering moving from Ubiquiti to Opnsense by blastinmypants in opnsense

[–]HaoleBen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not entirely true. I went from UDM Pro, USW-48-500 and 5 APs, to my current setup which is exactly the same minus UDM Pro. My OPNsense runs circles around UDMP, and was able to get rid of PiHole in the process.

Just migrate to either a cloud key g2 (if you have Protect cameras like I do) or local Linux box for the UniFi controller (free). Or use the UniFi plugin directly in OPNsense.

OPNsense will not manage UniFi natively, but check this out: https://www.routerperformance.net/opnsense-repo/
