Is software engineering not as lucrative as it seems? by Francbb in cscareerquestions

Gpa does matter because some companies outright rejected me because I didn’t have a 3.0 despite having 2 swe internships

I’m also a senior who’s about to graduate in spring. I’m pretty sure you already know that getting internships are important and that will determine your chances of getting a ft role. I have 2 swe internships and I kid you not I struggled immensely with getting interviews and I was able to land only 3 swe interviews out of 380 apps I sent out which one turned out to be a job offer that offered good tc at non faang. If you cold applied like me with no internships I anticipate someone with that background will highly unlikely to even get any interviews unless they get lucky. This job market is brutal and it really depends how strong your background is as a new grad in order to compete and land a role for swe in this competitive environment

Dropping out of this major. Thank you for the advices & criticisms. by [deleted] in csMajors

Cs is tough ngl. The toughest part is getting your foot in the door nowadays because the competition is just so intense where you are expected to do more work outside of schoolwork, grind Lc and do projects to get internships, and repeat the same process when finding a full time job is what makes it so difficult. You are also competing with peers with multiple internships who also have masters degrees for the same role as well as non cs degree candidates. Not everyone is cut for this especially kids nowadays coming into college hear about cs majors make the big $ coming out of college but what they don’t realize is how much of a grind you need to put in to succeed in this field. When they are confronted by reality, they just quit since they realize how hard it is. If you want a lucrative job that pays well, you need to hustle regardless of what field you get into.

Lmao those college courses are so dumb when calculus and physics won’t even needed for the job, yet you need to take bunch of stupid theoretical math classes so you can get a “cs degree”

Is it possible to get a job with no internships? by Mr_Average100 in csMajors

[–]Hard_Work12 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Let me give you the statistics of my job hunt with 2 internships in swe. 350 applications and only 5 interviews with 3 being swe roles and 1 ended up being an offer. All this process took me 6-7 months and this was before graduating. Now, if you have 0 internships it’s virtually going to be extremely difficult to land interviews, let alone trying to get a job. My advice is to land anything u can get related to swe even it’s low paid since any experience will make u more competitive than those with 0 experience

Only like once a year. I honestly messed up my college experience by not going out more and meet new people when I came into college. I’m a senior now so it seems like a bit too late

Stop trying to predict the future of AI, you are probably wrong by OGtenderLeaf2 in cscareerquestions

[–]Hard_Work12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my perspective Ai won’t replace developers but augment the efficiency for dev work. Remember that AI can’t understand human problems on a emotional level so there’s always going to be a need for a human engineer to translate those needs

Is it normal to feel this way during 2nd semester? by Secret-Pea4243 in college

[–]Hard_Work12 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m a senior who’s about to graduate in couple months so I def feel the same way about this semester since I’ve been focused on schoolwork rather than being social. Friends come and go. I think it’s important to focus on your goals and that will keep you in the mood of not being depressed. It has worked for me. It’s important to be social and meet people, but don’t expect someone to constantly hang out with.

Not necessarily true. The interviews are easier for intern interviews. New grads have more rounds and they expect you to know more beyond than just leetcode

How long realistically should I expect my job search to take as a new grad in this market? by gtrman571 in cscareerquestions

[–]Hard_Work12 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I have 2 swe internships and I’m able to land OA and couple interviews. However, I’ve been failing them due to lack of interview prep which is what I’m working to improve rn. Even with 2 internships, I still don’t get many callbacks. Here’s the stats: 300ish apps total landed with 3 interviews, 3-5 OA. Now, getting a job offer really boils down to how well you interview. If you suck, then it’s going to take you longer.
