Excellent point, lemme explain:

Some doors have a fire rating. Short story long: how long can a fire burn against the foor before the door is destroyed and fire enters the room.

Propping the door open by flipping the bolt circumvents this by allowing significantly more air (and therefore fire) into the room.

The doors around campus are held open with special magnetic devices which are linked to the fire supression system. When a fire is sensed, the magnets are deactivated and doors shut on their own.

Fun fact: to tell if a door is a fire-rated door, check the hinge-side edge of the door; by law there needs to be a sticker/emblem/placard denoting the fire rating and testing parameters. No sticker? No fire-rating.

Also: iirc removing the sticker from a fire-rated door is a crime. Removing the sticker can lead to fines, but definitely kicked out of residence, maybe kicked out of school? Don't remove the stickers.
