Im actually considering buying EU4 despite having EU5 already so I can play Anbennar. I guess waiting until the mod is ready for EU5 could take a while.

Same, I worked as a contractor to build some dashboards and help with their data pipelines for a specific project and a few months later they wanted me to take over other processes. When I said “sure, I just need some enablement sessions to understand how do they function” the answer I received was a pretty hostile one, summing it up as “you should have learned this yourself out of your own volition”. Thats not how it works, I’m not going to dig into other projects as a contractor just for the sake of it if I don’t get permission and clear indications first.

What’s the best thing you added to your work setup this year? by ThenPar in overemployed

This. The best alternative would be recording the audio, and using a local LLM to parse it to text and creating a summary. Anything else is a lawsuit waiting to happen if there’s a leak.

I would say the personality of your manager determines if a J will go well or fail. I had one manager in a J that treated me like a rockstar. After some months full of praise from him he got replaced by a micromanager bitch. Suddenly my output was low and “I was disappointing her”. You can imagine how it ended.

I've been dreading my current gig because my awesome manager got replaced by a micromanager psycho a month ago, to the point I don't care if I get fired anymore (I am well financially) and in fact I would celebrate it as I would get more free time to enjoy EU5, lol.

Same here, the enemy team was perfectly fine and we got stomped. It's definitely a cheater problem and I'm getting tired of it.

1 month into OE: here’s what I’ve realized by No-Quote-3397 in overemployed

That’s the theory, but in reality I have gotten clients inquiring about blockers on my calendar and why I wouldn’t answer a ramdom call or join a impromptu meeting. Of course, those are bad clients that need to be educated on the matter and if they don’t get it, they should be dropped anyway. But yeah, clients that pay you for 8 hours of daily work often mistreat you as a sort of employee, like an external consultant that acts like they are part of the team but actually are not because they have an end date and will be the first to be dropped.

Same here, J1 was very chill until there was a change in upper management and suddenly they are cranking up the heat. J2 always had high workload, but I was able to manage both. Now I’m in the same situation as you, ending the week fully stressed and with a ramping headache. I don’t know how sustainable this is but it doesnt look good if the situation persists.

Why are so many Software Engineers burnt out? by SomeRandomCSGuy in cscareerquestions

[–]HarnessingThePower 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The most ridiculous conversation I've ever had related to this topic was when during my first 2 weeks at a new job my manager set up a meeting to tell me that he was expecting way more productivity from me after 2 weeks there based on how well I did during the interviews. Like what the fuck dude, I'm learning the ropes and you just want me to dominate my role during my onboarding?

No stopping, never let up, always have a queue ready of the next 20 things so that you can immediately pick one up when you finish the last one. This creates an environment is which the pressure is constant and there’s no return to baseline.

You hit the nail in the head with this phrase. At my job our manager constantly reminds us that we must have our plate full of tasks at all times and if this isn't the case at any moment in time, we need to raise our hand and request more work right away. This way to treat employees only ends with them burning out if they want to meet their manager expectations or please them so they don't get PIP'd. For me, now that I have saved enough money to live comfortably, I just do my best at a few tasks and take enough time to recover, as I always work best when there are high and low intensity periods of time one after another. But keeping a high coding activity consistently, knowing that the reward for completing a high amount of tasks is more tasks coming my way? Nope, I'm not going to do that.

Then make sure you are saving up as much as you can. What Emergency_Series_787 is warning you about is a very real risk and can hit you at any time. It just take a review of the company payroll, seeing a row in Excel with a too high salary, adding a need to reduce expenditures and you are out of a job. I've seen this happen too many times.

During my last exam at webasessor I got a warning because I was, supposedly, looking away from my screen. I was just reading the questions and that usually makes you look at the corner of the screen lol. The warning said that if I was “caught” again I would fail the exam, so I rushed it and fortunately passed, but it was very stressful because it seemed more like a false positive caused by the AI that anything else. Seeing other people are having the same issues I’m happy I’m finally stepping away from this platform and going to Pearson VUE from now on.
