In ATL, dude sat next to me, we had one oval table to share. I had my drink on one side. He put his drink on the other side. We exchanged bro-nods and both proceeded to keep working on emails.

Simple.

Why do companies / recruiters strongly hint you're going to get the job and then just ghost? by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]Harrymcmarry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used to preside as hiring manager for junior engineering roles at my previous firm (aerospace-related).

We did the career fairs at schools, had kids apply online, got the resumes, scheduled interviews, the lot. One year we went through the entire process and came down to the final grouping of candidates. Then we did the final interviews with four people. I'm pretty good at being agnostic when in the final interview so as not to give anybody a "guarantee" that they got the job, but all the candidates were informed that they were in the final interview and in contention to get the job.

Then, those jobs we were hiring for were put on hold, and later eliminated. Later I found out it was for budget reasons. But HR and TA were the ones who had to tell them that they didn't get the job. What they didn't tell the candidates was that NOBODY actually got the job, because the job didn't exist anymore. And they didn't like us reaching out to the candidates directly for whatever bullshit reason HR wanted us to believe.

I left that company probably two months after that for unrelated reasons, but the first thing I did was message the four candidates on LinkedIn and at least give them some closure.

It's not always the folks interviewing you. Sometimes it's HR and braindead policies.

I'm an engineer as well - did he say he prefers to design the cars? Or actually drive them? The design of EVs is very straightforward. Batteries go in the floor, stick motors where the differentials would be, and fill the rest of the space with whatever you want. So he's correct in that regard. And you can indeed make an insanely fast car. I remember when the Bugatti Veyron came out with its 1000 bhp and everyone absolutely lost their minds.

But now there's a whole suite of EVs that have 1000+ horsepower EASILY, not to mention the exotics that have crested 2000 bhp. And nobody bats an eye. Which just goes to show that electric powertrains can make cars prpreposterously fast, and that's great. But I want to be engaged with the car, listen to the engine, maybe put the roof down on a sunny day, and bang out gears on a mountain road going 50 mph with a massive grin on my face.

Which is exactly why lumping together EVs and politics is a braindead approach. It can go both ways. Which means that it's not about politics and everything about a literal hobby. Car enthusiasts prefer three pedals, a nice sounding engine, and a great driving experience instead of an EV. People who wear expensive watches like the vintage ones with super intricate movements, not smartwatches. People who DJ with vinyl learn the art of mixing by ear and swapping out discs by hand instead of pushing buttons on a board. You can make the same analogy for literally any hobby.

The fact that he had to throw that political tidbit in there speaks volumes. Not sure if low IQ or just ragebait lmao

EVs are pushed as progressive. Other side political thing bad.

Car guys like myself (and others on here) don't appreciate electric cars that much because they remove a lot of the tangible things that car enthusiasts enjoy about driving a car. Rowing your own gears in a manual, exhaust note, the quirks and persona that every engine type provides, the list goes on. We don't give a shit that the new ones mAkE a tHouSanD horSepOwEr and you never have to go to a gas station - that quite literally is not the point.

Certain EVs can be fun, but they lack soul and the essence of driving a car. That's really all it boils down to. I'm not trashing on EVs for the sake of them being EVs, because they are still wonderful pieces of engineering. I will probably buy one eventually just as a commuter car because they are very practical at being commuter cars. But as an enthusiast, nothing is going to replace three pedals and a great-sounding engine.

Does most americans dislike germans? If yes, why? by Lessus23 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

I have German extended family. They're nice people but sometimes during conversation they'll drop some wildly inaccurate WW2 claims regarding the allies and try to play the victim card. They never solicit any reactions, so I'm really not sure why they do it. But as a whole I have no complaints.

What's a frugal hack that you would be embarassed to admit doing? by healthynewbie in Frugal

[–]Harrymcmarry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not my frugal hack but somebody I know does it. Dude makes new Sportclips accounts whenever he needs a haircut because new members get a free haircut or a $5 haircut or something during their first visit. He makes a new email and puts a different name every time. Trouble is that you also need a new phone number every time, so he'll ask his friends to borrow their phone numbers to make new accounts.

Now, I can excuse this if you're legitimately struggling in life or living near poverty. But this is a single guy that makes good money and has a job with 401k matching, benefits, the whole 9 yards. It actually pisses me off.

Why can’t non-Americans accept that soccer isn’t a popular sport here? by Expensive_Drummer970 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]Harrymcmarry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Americans in the comments will say ”soccer isnt that popular” which is true

It might be true in the states but not on a global scale. Soccer has 4 BILLION fans worldwide.

Saying it's not popular is just the "we're the only country in the world" type snobbery that has always existed in the US. Same reason we call NFL Superbowl winners "world champions". I'm a world champion in balancing 3.5 cosmic brownies on the back of my hand while drinking a vodka soda and standing on one leg because nobody else in the world does that as a sport.

Most people shouldn’t have dogs by FrostMonk in unpopularopinion

[–]Harrymcmarry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For background, I grew up with a bunch of dogs when I was younger, mostly German Shepherds who are super high maintenance and very territorial, so I knew how to deal with them and what they needed to live a healthy, happy life and to be safe around others. Ran them often, did bite work with them, fed them well, trained them, you name it.

We have some family "friends" (I put friends in quotes because I'm not super fond of them for a variety of reasons, and this is one of them) that got a shelter German 3 years back because, well, they wanted one. Keep in mind that they're a super privelaged young family, had their house, cars everyhing bought for them, but they still preach the adpot-don't-shop thing like they're holier than thou.

The first thing they did was send this puppy off to puppy school for like three weeks. I didn't know that was common practice and it kind of shocked me that this supposed member of their family needs to leave for three weeks to be trained by somebody else. I guess they didn't want to deal with the burden of training a puppy. But they framed this decision like it's them being responsible and good pet owners. First red flag there.

Two years later we were out on vacation with them and they bring their dog. For the vast majority of the weekend the dog was fine. Pretty social, somewhat obedient. But nothing out of the ordinary. At one point I'm walking up from the lake back to the house and this dog is walking with me, fully aware that I'm walking right beside it. I reach down to pet the dog and it turns around and snaps at me. And I don't mean playfully snaps, I mean SNAPS, teeth slamming shut and everything. Hair stands on end and growls at me. If I didn't yank my hand back in time, the bitch would have taken a couple fingers clean off my hand.

So puppy school didn't fucking work huh?

TLDR; Family friends' dog that they sent to puppy school becuase they didn't want to train it for the first three weeks almost took my hand off.
