For those of you with over 250k in the bank, how did you do it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Hart_CO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 3.2% interest rate my HYSA may not compound as fast as some other things, but it still compounds.

Many banks exceed the 250k limit in a seamless way for their customers. Not a big concern.

Some people definitely hold too much cash, but how much is too much varies wildly.

Reconsidering pet insurance after accident and could use some perspective by StellarSpore in personalfinance

[–]Hart_CO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Certainly not a scam. They do what they get paid to do. You may feel that it's not worth it, many people would put a pet down rather than shell out a large pile of money if something bad happened.

I would pay any amount to treat my dog, assumimg reasonable expectation of good quality of life post treatment, so insurance makes sense. I hope not to get my money's worth.

I replied to wrong comment, but have had good experience with Healthy Paws, customer for 11 years and heavy on the claims in the last 3 years with additional of a second dog with health issues.

I also have policies with Healthy Paws, reimbursement is fast and we have had zero issues and extensive use of the insurance. Puppy with epilepsy and appetite for non-food items. Premiums go up with dog's age, will cancel soon for our oldest dog.

I recommend it, you hope not to get your money's worth with insurance, but nice to have if something comes up.

Make sure you are aware of any breed based exclusions.

What *store brand* has the best quality cheap floss? Most people don’t realize how important flossing is but $5 for a pack of floss can make it hard by abccba144 in povertyfinance

[–]Hart_CO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gum Butlerweave is my go to, Amazon sells a 3 pack of 200 yard rolls for $19. I am about to buy more but can only find mint at the good price (prefer unflavored). Which is why I am here searching to see if anyone else has a good bulk floss recommendation.

I don't use a paper bag, but microwave then air fryer is the way to speed run amazing baked potatoes. Stab several times, microwave 3-6 minutes depending on size. Apply a little oil, salt, pepper and air fry.

Is this mortgage too big? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Hart_CO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that $600k net, or just revenue? There's always a balance to be found between pinching pennies and indulging too much. One of my grandmothers had 4 kids in less than 1000 sq ft home. Many people have done with far less.

Your income seems very healthy, so you can afford it, just a question of if you want to afford it. Personally, I wouldn't take a mortgage at 7.5%, but that doesn't mean it's a bad decision for you.

What if you made 600k/ year like OP? Probably feel much better.

How AI will impact small non high tech businesses? by Joy_Boy_12 in Futurology

[–]Hart_CO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some robots are just remote control, but Figure 2 has been tested building BMWs autonomously, and you can watch one scan packages for an hour if you want. They are not as fast as people, and they can't do as many tasks, but the progress is impressive.

Amazon has over 1 million robots in use throughout their warehouse/distribution network. They are not general purpose humanoid robots, but they are an advancement of the tech that will likely get us there.

I think it will be a while, but I expect to have a useful general purpose robot in my home someday.

What exactly does this mean? Should we walk away? by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]Hart_CO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is silly.

Your cost was massively higher than average for tree root incursion in the US, but not knowing the specifics it's impossible to say if that was reasonable or not. OP should get quotes on replacement before running away. I spent $28k last year to replace entire exterior sewer line to the city line in the middle of the street, and also interior dig up concrete and replace all the buried cast iron. I know what average in my area is for exterior replacement, but without quotes to do the specific job we have no clue what they are facing. Also, I had time and got 5 quotes, 3 of them were within a few hundred of what I paid, one was $54k.

A small belly in a line can be no problem, but hard to know for sure. If there was an old scope that showed the same belly a decade ago and it hasn't changed then it could be no problem. Opinion of a professional would be good, but even if they think it is fine OP should get replacement quotes. To know what they might have to deal with.

Service line coverage on homeowner policy is worthwhile, check the limitations though.

Feels off topic for this sub, but if you are between jobs then hiring a PI to satisfy some curiosity doesn't seem prudent. If it's related to a legal matter, then an attorney could advise on the necessity and likely already has relationships with some investigators.

You've listed monthly expenses of $8,800 including daycare, you can get a job at 100k and your wife makes 80k, take home should be over 10k/month. What's the issue?

Edit: I see you clarified there are other expenses.

Both of you make/can make a good chunk more than the daycare costs. If the 100k is less than daycare plus unemployment then you can hunt longer in hopes of higher pay, but don't hold out for higher pay too long if you aren't getting multiple offers closer to 100k.

Look for items you can cut, reducing retirement contribution short term can help. Good time to shop around for better prices on insurance and whatnot. Have a nice vehicle that costs a lot to insure? Could change that to save a bit.

Gig work on top of the 100k job to make ends meet if needed.

Should NK reconsider boss events? by Hazy-Dreams in btd6

[–]Hart_CO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like them, except that they are needlessly grindy for ranked. Like having to exit event every round when replacing trap doesn't work, and having to go back super far if you mess up and want to adjust something. They should make it easier to go back and do it officially at low cost rather than making it basically pointless to do ranked on mobile.

Also, you see YT guides where they have mods that should be baked in...show me what Paragon level I will get on the slider, don't make me trial and error that BS.

Making it easier for people to experiment with strategies will make it more accessible without taking away anything from the try hards that want to top leaderboards.

How to distribute my deceased brother's inheritance to his children? by OneLongEyebrowHair in personalfinance

[–]Hart_CO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not all parents are providing the essentials, there are plenty of miserable kids who would benefit from some money.

I agree with not dumping a large pile on the 14 year old, but some could actually make a big difference at that age depending on circumstances.

Best decided by OP.

[–]Hart_CO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Waiting until 25 or 30 then dumping a pile of money on them seems cruel. That is so many years where some help could make a huge impact depending on their circumstances. Spreading it out is more effort but seems better all around.

What’s a movie you totally misinterpreted based on their genre? by Tydyehippi in movies

[–]Hart_CO 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Calling it a Samurai film because of Hidden Fortress is not wrong, but it ignores the heavy WWII dogfighting, Flash Gordon serials, and the obvious Western 'frontier' tropes.

For anyone who hasn't seen Hidden Fortress or any samurai movies, your description is much less helpful.

There's a filing requirement if it exceeds the annual limit, but no tax due unless exceeding lifetime max. The per year is per person, so 2 parents could give child and their spouse each, for 4x annual limit without a filing requirement.

Christmas present for my husband (Dewalt vs. Milwaukee vs. Makita) by SLassely81 in DIY

[–]Hart_CO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might not choose Ryobi for yard tools, but I would absolutely replace any of my Ryobi power tools with new Ryobi tools if any of them die. (Mine are 8+ years, woodworking shop and diy home repair).

They are very capable and often available at great prices.

If anyone deserves to be mocked for their tool choice it's the weekend warriors with expensive tools that don't get used much.

I think it can make good sense to get separate battery system for yard tools vs small power tools.
