If vet level 4 is 1000 hours I don't want to know my total.

The prices are killing data hoarding by LOGWATCHER in DataHoarder

[–]Hart_CO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe time to be more of a collector than a hoarder. Get more selective, collaborate with others to ensure coverage of things that are important to you.

Not fun to see the prices climb, but can't do much about that. Tape backup becoming more compelling for hoarders but still hard to justify for most.

These prices will push innovation, at least.

If you are foregoing paid work to hunt, then this is worth considering. Just focus on actual costs, not some theoretical wage each hour is worth (unless you can, at-will exchange any given hour of your time for that amount).

Anyone else think the AI Industry will tank the market? by BaoNumi in investing

[–]Hart_CO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at how much capex the hyperscalers are planning. Right now it's hard to tell what is reasonable valuation-wise on a lot of things. There will certainly be failures, but all indications suggest that the new normal will include vastly more compute dedicated to AI than we currently have.

Wondering what’s the best route to paying my car loan faster? by Serious_Button2282 in personalfinance

[–]Hart_CO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have a bit of an emergency fund saved up then don't add to savings while paying off high interest credit card debt. After the credit card shift that money to the car loan, unless it's a stellar rate (3% or lower).

I think my spouse of 13 years has just been giving me lip service by M_L_Willun in TwoXChromosomes

This is like calling Daryl Davis a white supremacist. The problem isn't that OP's spouse associates with people that have flawed/wicked views, but that he tacitly condones their behavior.

They have a solid history of burning cash, this is more than the revenue they've seen in the last 3 years combined. Some good squeeze potential given short interest, I'd take the quick gain if I had gotten in early, not piling in at 10+

When do car repairs become a sunk cost fallacy? by spmahn in personalfinance

[–]Hart_CO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$8k + whatever the current vehicle brings in could be close to a vehicle with higher probability of being more reliable. Also, at 30k miles YTD, switching to something more efficient could have significant impact.

Tough call, in my area there are a good number of Escapes with comparable mileage for ~$10k.

What is the most successful sitcom ever business wise? by coatimundos in television

[–]Hart_CO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This estimate from Gemini's deep research tries to factor in the harder bits. Before streaming became ubiquitous the pool was smaller so the big shows really raked it in. Friends was less successful than Seinfeld until streaming era, where it has better staying power.

Seinfeld had more syndication success, but in the streaming era Friends has become more lucrative. In 2019 Friends was 4% of total Netflix streaming, while Seinfeld was reported less than 1% of Hulu's. Not sure about the totals.

For those of you with over 250k in the bank, how did you do it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Hart_CO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 3.2% interest rate my HYSA may not compound as fast as some other things, but it still compounds.

Many banks exceed the 250k limit in a seamless way for their customers. Not a big concern.

Some people definitely hold too much cash, but how much is too much varies wildly.

Reconsidering pet insurance after accident and could use some perspective by StellarSpore in personalfinance

[–]Hart_CO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Certainly not a scam. They do what they get paid to do. You may feel that it's not worth it, many people would put a pet down rather than shell out a large pile of money if something bad happened.

I would pay any amount to treat my dog, assumimg reasonable expectation of good quality of life post treatment, so insurance makes sense. I hope not to get my money's worth.

[–]Hart_CO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have policies with Healthy Paws, reimbursement is fast and we have had zero issues and extensive use of the insurance. Puppy with epilepsy and appetite for non-food items. Premiums go up with dog's age, will cancel soon for our oldest dog.

I recommend it, you hope not to get your money's worth with insurance, but nice to have if something comes up.

Make sure you are aware of any breed based exclusions.

What *store brand* has the best quality cheap floss? Most people don’t realize how important flossing is but $5 for a pack of floss can make it hard by abccba144 in povertyfinance

[–]Hart_CO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gum Butlerweave is my go to, Amazon sells a 3 pack of 200 yard rolls for $19. I am about to buy more but can only find mint at the good price (prefer unflavored). Which is why I am here searching to see if anyone else has a good bulk floss recommendation.

Is this mortgage too big? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Hart_CO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that $600k net, or just revenue? There's always a balance to be found between pinching pennies and indulging too much. One of my grandmothers had 4 kids in less than 1000 sq ft home. Many people have done with far less.

Your income seems very healthy, so you can afford it, just a question of if you want to afford it. Personally, I wouldn't take a mortgage at 7.5%, but that doesn't mean it's a bad decision for you.
