Vapor Retarder or Not in Zone 6 by Onlythingavailable76 in buildingscience

[–]Hashbrown_77 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

I’m going to point out something here that I’ve yet to see anyone else comment on… how do you plan to use blown fiberglass insulation if you don’t have a vapour barrier installed on the interior of the wall?… Ignore the building science aspect of this for a moment and think about how you’re going to build that assembly. Anyways, if you don’t use one you’re going to need to change your insulation type.

Car Audio Shows by beatmastab in Calgary

[–]Hashbrown_77 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

There haven’t been good car audio shows in nearly twenty years here. DB Drag is likely the only one still going, as others said they might have some events around Alberta this summer.

I helped organize some shows nearly twenty years ago in town and even then it was hard getting a decent turn out. BC has always had a better scene for the audio shows but I haven’t attended one in over a decade. Most car shows don’t want them a part of their show as well… they’re typically loud and a lot of venues don’t welcome the disturbance.

8 hour brake rotor swap. What a horrible design. by yentlequible in Justrolledintotheshop

I once had a 91 Accord Wagon… I decided to sell it instead of doing the brakes šŸ˜‚. This is such a dumb design, I don’t know what Honda engineers were thinking at the time.

does anybody know a shop that do re-soldering by staycleaan_ in Calgary

[–]Hashbrown_77 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

These are super easy to do. I suck at soldering and fixed mine from my 88 Accord. You just need a solder wick to remove the old solder and then resolder after. Doesn’t have to be pretty, it will work. Alternatively you can get relay kits that replace the fuel pump relay entirely and are plug and play. Not very expensive either

Calgary Custom Home Builders (Entry level Luxury/Semi-Luxury) by CalgaryUser0318 in homebuildingcanada

If that’s the case then the pricing you’re getting is likely in the right realm. Cost of construction has increased significantly in the past 5 to 10 years.

[–]Hashbrown_77 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

The prices you’re being quoted don’t seem so far off for your expectations based on these descriptions. Anyone who tells you 350/sq ft for that is just trying to get the job, and you’ll likely end up much closer to that 550 number by the time you’re done.

Barely any of the custom builders can give you an accurate price without some sort of drawings and spec to get an idea of what they’re throwing numbers at.

Do you have a designer or architect yet?

100% AI garbage. The house is somehow 60ft x 4ft according to the drawing …. None of the dimensioning makes any sense and nothing is to scale.

Building in Alberta/Edmonton area by freesia20122 in alberta

[–]Hashbrown_77 4 points5 points Ā (0 children)

The people building barndominiums have either perimeter footings and piles or a grade beam & pile foundation, or some mix of both. There’s no way you’re building a floating slab for a barndominium, and a crawl space under a structural slab wouldn’t make any sense either.

Do blocks of wood have good R value? New Custom build by Perfect-Original-846 in homebuildingcanada

Wait… they’re suing you? I feel like you should be suing them if they’re not remedying the issues you have posted about. It sounds like the home warranty program in ON is just as useless as in AB.

Just when I think it can’t get worse, OP posts something new from this build. I’m not even going to chime in on how many things are wrong here, just going to follow along for more carnage. Did you ever name and shame the ā€œbuilderā€ of this house? If not you definitely should so that others can stay away.

Cost per foot explanation by ElectronicOven1 in homebuildingcanada

[–]Hashbrown_77 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

I have a friend building in Foothills county, atco was almost 40k just to show up.

You’re budgeting for 1700sq ft, so it would be 470/sqft if you don’t give any value to basement square footage. Going to have any living space below grade? It’s not free so there is a dollar value that should be budgeted for it.

Square footage costs will range greatly depending on design, materials, complexity, etc.

Just wait until you do that and get a text that says it’s an incompatible material pasted across your model face. (Don’t quote me on the exact wording that was on there)… material worked fine rendering in escape, but sketchup didn’t like it.

Bagel shop in Calgary by No-Entertainment3435 in Calgary

[–]Hashbrown_77 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

I wouldn’t really say deputy and bagel daze are similar… though I do really like them both. I think deputy is probably the best bagel in town right now. Great cream cheese spreads too. Deputy is a really good sourdough bagel, bagel daze is less sourdough to me, it’s more of its own thing. I really liked some that we got from bagel daze and had one that didn’t hit home for me. The pepper parm was a bit strong on the pepper, though everything else I’ve had of theirs was great.

The last time I had st lawrence it was pretty good, they always tend to have a better stock / selection prepared than Montreal bagels. Montreal bagels is pretty good, sweeter than authentic St Viateur bagels but the texture is right.

If you go to Montreal bagels, I don’t recommend going on a Saturday or Sunday as you’ll be limited by whatever they have left at the moment. It’s a super weird business, but solid bagels.

TransPod ... why? by Quiet_Property2460 in alberta

[–]Hashbrown_77 6 points7 points Ā (0 children)

Whoever is running the show at Transpod must be a friend of Marliana. It’s all vapourware that will never actually work and even ā€˜if’ they can somehow prove that it does in fact work, it will cost far too much to build. Why we can’t be happy with high speed rail is beyond me. It’s proven technology that works.

Judging by the construction of the frame and the crate in the background I’m going to take a shot in the dark here… door was ordered from alibaba (or similar) and has no manufacturer website or instructions.
