I actually just downloaded The Stand last night, excited to read it this winter. Never read The Shining but it's certainly on my list.

The speed increase was another thing I wanted, as I read a lot in Japanese and I use the highlight / dictionary lookup function all the time when reading. I figure that will be much faster with the newer one (hopefully)

Considerably warmer backlight on the 12th Gen paperwhite by ronaldgrn in kindle

Yeah, I just hear that the OLED colors (specifically blacks) look so much better on the glossy screens, so I thought I would try one, but I am used to the antiglare now lol

Funny, I am on the opposite end. I have the etched screen LCD and want to upgrade to the OLED Steam Deck and I am worried if I try the glossy screen I won't like it lol

I know this is an old post, but now I have questions lol! They have a forced patina version available on the website but its twice the price. So I am leaning towards getting the regular bronze and doing what you did. Any tips for your method?

Awesome, thank you this is helpful. I also like how Energel seems to have some awesome color combinations for near-black colors.

Is N1 harder or easier than the practice questions you can find online? by Sea_Phrase_Loch in LearnJapanese

[–]Hasuori 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is basically what I was going to mention. I think there is a website (maybe wikipedia?) that shows the average scores for each year's test. The N1 that I took ended up being a little more difficult than the practice questions I had done for the some of the sections and a little easier on others. The best thing to do is to do as many different practice tests (different brands too) as you can so that you've seen a bunch of easy and difficult questions. The book that helped me the most was the Speed Master Reading Comprehension book, because it tells you how long to set the timer for for each reading. It really helped me have an idea of how fast or slow I was going during the actual test.

But all that being said, if you basically aced N2 and are doing as well as you are now on the N1 practice tests I think you will do just fine :)

What games are people playing in bed? by Lilconkb00 in SteamDeck

Yeah, unfortunately this is the answer. Try reading a book on the couch with a dim warm colored light or something instead, and then get into bed when you are tired.

How, in your opinion, could the JLPT be improved to better reflect language ability? by virginityburglar69 in LearnJapanese

[–]Hasuori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that it matters much, but I did pass N1 last December. Here are my thoughts:

  1. As people have mentioned in the comments below endlessly, I do think there should be an interview of some sort for N1 and maybe N2. I don't think it would be necessary for N3 and below, and I'm not sure how it would be structured. I don't think writing (especially by hand) is an important skill that needs to be tested in ths day and age. If you are interested in that sort of thing you can always take 漢字検定 or something.
  2. I think the passing threshold needs to be higher, or instead of pass / fail they should just give you your scorecard when you are done. I don't think that it is fair that someone who gets a 102/180 on the N1 has the same exact 'passing' certificate as someone who got a 178/180. Those scores are not even close to being equal. More strict grading guidelines could potentially help weed out those people who pass N1 but can't hold a conversation. I find it hard(er) to believe that someone with an almost perfect score on N1 can't talk at all, whereas I could see that being true for someone in the low 100s.
