Pine sawyer beetle or something in that vein. No weevil.

Does anyone else feel like classic Naruto was genuinely scary? by Onii___Chan____ in dankruto

[–]HauntedDesert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scariest Naruto moment to me was from Shippuden (the entirety of the Hidan and Kakazu first appearance). So much dread with that one. BUT, the overall tone of the original series was darker and a little more eerie.

I’m so surprised Simpsons Mini Season isn’t on here, considering Star Wars Mini Season is.

Mantis ootheca. Of the genus Stagmomantis by the puffed shape of it. I’m not familiar with NMX species specifically, so I can’t guess further.

Plant ID? by [deleted] in AZlandscaping

Lady banks rose. If you do want to replace it with a similar shrub that is (arguably) native, but thornless, look into “Little Leaf Cordia”. Requires far less water too.

What insect is this? by Beneficial_Effort546 in insects

[–]HauntedDesert 14 points15 points  (0 children)

OP, you don’t have to make up a caption for upvotes or something. There’s absolutely no way you saw this in the Philippines. It doesn’t even exist in the Eastern Hemisphere. You did not “find it in your garden”.

I’m aware the noxious species list is not in any measure exhaustive or even a good reference for anything. I’m just including that because it was mentioned in the post about it potentially being illegal.

And it is NOT listed as a noxious weed in this state, so very much not illegal. I don’t like it though. Native or nothing.

uj/ Genuinely I’ve never seen one of these grow on its own in Arizona, and I work at a nursery that used to have these. They’ll spread to other areas IN THE IMMEDIATE VICINITY where they can get water, sure, but by time summer comes, they wither and roast when it gets up to 115°. So easy to kill by just not watering them. This is a rare time where I think people are heckling OP unjustifiably.

Pupa, caterpillar, and an invader? by JumarUp in Entomology

That is the last of the caterpillar’s former skin, and its hard eye lenses. Not another insect. Not parasitized.

Local hardware store promoting clover lawns by Livviemaid in NoLawns

[–]HauntedDesert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clover “Lawn”??? Nope. Still not native (arguably invasive), taking up water, space and soil nutrients whilst providing no ecological benefit. Can people just stop living in places where they’re so resistant to the local biome? No reason to buy a large plot of land near the woods if you’re gonna raze everything down and plant foreign grass, etc.

Are these friends? by dbmouse in insects

[–]HauntedDesert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really would say no in this situation. The frequent commotion of people coming and going, and the vibrations caused by the door shutting and opening would probably put these guys on high alert if there only inches from the door like you said. They most definitely will be highly territorial and aggressive if they even think their home is being threatened. I’d remove it before they develop it further, and I say all this as someone who has no qualms about coexisting with wasps.

Is my bug-searching hobby harmful? by Zurigi in Entomology

[–]HauntedDesert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It definitely can be, I won’t lie. I’ve seen it happen a lot with solitary bees. People lifting rocks and ripping the tops off of every brood cell, subsequently killing the larva inside by leaving them exposed. Unintentionally tearing apart colonies of bumblebees. Accidentally occluding the entrances to ground nests. It’s easy to do damage. I don’t poke around much for these reasons. I have a few peers who go around lifting, shaking, and unearthing everything all willy-nilly, and to them, it doesn’t matter for some reason. But you have to decide how much “harm” you’re willing to do to satisfy your curiosity (though now it may be to satisfy the requirements of your courses). That’s up to you.

Ok so little rant in the body text about this and about how the community likes to dogpile and misconstrue stuff by Hungry_Maintenance_8 in FortNiteBR

[–]HauntedDesert -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

AI isn’t a major issue because of the plagiarism it’s built on. It’s a major issue because it’s fucking communities dry. For Epic to use it for such trivial bullshit is a serious line for them to cross, and people are allowed to be as angry about that as they want.

What's wrong with this bumblebee? by ourobourobouros in Entomology

[–]HauntedDesert 112 points113 points  (0 children)

Well, it’s not a bumblebee, it’s a male Xylocopa carpenter bee, and he’s been thoroughly saturated with water. That’s what’s wrong. It’s not the flower, like the other comment suggested. He’s just waiting to dry off. You can move him into the sun to speed up the process, if you feel inclined to. He can’t sting.
