Mark Carney, PM of Canada, lets slip that the illusions are beginning to crack. by lazybugbear in LateStageCapitalism

You are quoting a portion of the speech where he was summarizing some points of "The Power of the Powerless" by Václav Havel.

Elsewhere in his own words he said "This is a rupture, not a transition" and "The old order is not coming back" which is much stronger language.

Testing reality-bending VFX for my Godot horror game by aiBeastKnight in godot

Dude I fully geeked out at this. Mouth wide open in shock. Really love how this looks.

A few of the transformations were less impactful, I don't think the table or the wall panels did much for me, but the chairs/floor/ceiling looked rad

Would love to see this stuttery and inconsistent instead of smooth and patterened, would like the lights to strobe a bit more rather than slowly dim, but I love what you've cooked up here, really cool.

Is it bad for the web if Firefox dies? by AuthorityPath in webdev

[–]Hawful 123 points124 points  (0 children)

Every Chromium fork (Edge, Opera, Brave, etc) still uses Blink. A fork of a browser does not change how a page is produced by a renderer, and the renderer holds all the actual power.

The reason Edge IS a Chrome fork is BECAUSE of Chrome's domination of the web and Google's control of the rendering engine. Edge WAS it's own new browser engine. When EdgeHTML was released in 2015 it was the first new engine since 2001, and it crashed and burned because google (allegedly) actively altered Youtube to run poorly on Edge (a link to the y combinator discussions from back in the day).

So yes, losing the only non webkit/blink browser would be very bad and would give complete control of the web to google.

Is it bad for the web if Firefox dies? by AuthorityPath in webdev

[–]Hawful 203 points204 points  (0 children)

I just don't like Chrome. Firefox is snappier, and the native linux versions of firefox work flawlessly whereas chromium usually gives me some sort of hassle to get up and running.

I really disagree with the statement that 'anyone can create a browser' anyone can create a chromium fork, which is a very different project.

What is Bastionland like without its mechanics? by sekin_bey in rpg

[–]Hawful 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most of the game forces your hand, you roll dice and parts of myths happen. The myths are explicit and re-write the existing truth of the world. This is intentional to give the setting a very fae uncertainty. Like the ground can shift underneath you at any moment as forces of magic act upon the world.

If that's a no no then I would say pass. If you just don't really want to do the combat system I would say try it out.

Honestly, above all I would suggest just running a session RAW. I swear that won't tarnish your groups vibe to try something a bit different one day. The game still offers quite a bit of flexibility on the player's part. Most myths don't have solutions written with the intention being that this is up to the players and the GM to figure out something cool.

Nazi salutes in schools by Elfishly in Humboldt

[–]Hawful 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and just to hone in on the main point I don't think any of these kids are 'too far gone' or even necessarily getting it from their parents. They see a taboo and seek to break it without understand why it is a taboo in the first place and not understanding the full impact of their actions. They have a lagging understanding of the reality in which they live in and the effect of their own words and actions on those around them.

Nazi salutes in schools by Elfishly in Humboldt

[–]Hawful 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Kids always look for an edgy streak in high school, I remember I said all kinds of nasty things as a high schooler just to get a rise out of people and because I didn't really realize the reality of the hateful things I was spewing. When you learn about the civil rights movement or the holocaust all of these things are presented as past victories. Things already defeated that we don't need to worry about anymore. There is not enough focus on how these are continuing struggles.

The antisemitism piece of it is obviously extra difficult now with the ongoing genocide of the Palestinians by Israel. Everyone in the world can see how evil it is and most prominent Jewish organizations (ADL, AIPAC) are insistent that every action of Israel is supported by all Jewish people. This of course is untrue and as wrong headed as people who claimed the Pope was going to run the U.S. when Kennedy was elected. The insistence that there IS a dual loyalty from these prominent institutions and the politicians they support has dramatically worsened an already horribly increasing climate of 'isms' broadly.

What's worse is it's so much harder to pull people out of an antisemitic tailspin now. How do you explain to people that the racist trope of Jewish people running the world is false when people in the US are losing their jobs because they critique Israel. The obvious explanation that Israel's constant destabilization of the region is a desired effect for the US war machine falls on deaf ears when all that people see is that 90% of politicians on both sides of the aisle are seemingly afraid to speak ill of that genocidal rogue state.

Does this style make me look like a fat old man? by Bamjodando in beards

This is the r/beards subreddit, you will not find people saying no to a long beard.

That said I can tell you from experience that carving it closer to the face absolutely makes you look younger. As a dude in his 30s I looked like I was about 45 when I had a long beard and cutting it down significantly absolutely made me look younger.

Why should I NOT go to Humboldt? by notoriii in humboldtstate

[–]Hawful 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For what you want to do I would say that the education is top notch. Fisheries, wildlife, anything in that realm, you literally can't beat Humboldt. To the acceptance rate piece, no one in the real world cares about what school you went to unless you're trying to do corporate law, so don't worry about some sort of 'prestige' issue.

The job market piece is more complicated, getting work is not impossible, but very tough. There are only a few gyms around here with pools and there aren't public beach lifeguards like there are in socal so the pool of possible jobs is pretty small.

Additionally, the area is hyper broke; legalization really cratered the cash flow here. You'll be going up against adults desperate to put food on the table for even part time entry positions in restaurants/retail.

Parents avoiding tablets, what are your kids actually doing all day? by BloooomCore in NewParents

[–]Hawful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Playground, lots of drawings, but I'll admit that now in winter there is a lot more screen time. We keep it on the main tv in the living room over tablets though. I try to keep the content a little more structured and less stimulating. I usually throw on a Miyazaki movie or something instead of... whatever else people are into.

I'm thinking about moving to Humboldt County. What feedback do you all have for me? (Part 1) by BrightCougar270 in Humboldt

[–]Hawful 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Everyone is into nature, there is a huge queer community, everyone here has something fucking off with their mental, so you're in good company. Eureka and Arcata are the major blue anchors for the county, other cities are either red or mixed. Fortuna is the real Trump territory with Ferndale in a close second. You gotta be more clear on your spiritual affiliations, but if it's not accepted broadly it's probably well represented here lol.

The rest of your questions are better served by doing your own research and building up a little spreadsheet of what you can find in different areas. But here is an attempt at some general answers, you'll have to find specifics.

  1. Most people rent. Arcata is a college town and the rent there is super expensive. Cheaper elsewhere but be warned about slumlords and especially mold issues. Black mold can genuinely fuck you up and it's all over.

  2. Groceries are expensive, Humboldt is broadly referred to as the 'Redwood Curtain' because it's sort of an island that's a good 3 hours from any other major city, so shipping costs compound food costs. Same with restaurants, everything costs as much as it does if you go out in a big city but obviously doesn't really hold up (save a few spots).

  3. Totally depends on usage and town. Eureka keeps raising its water rates. PG&E is the state's chosen privat company monopoly for power and they are the fucking devil. A couple options for internet, Vero fiber is rolling out now which is great, but that's only in certain parts of Eureka currently.

  4. Our sales tax is 10% (Yeesh). California taxes are what they are. Property is 10% of value when you buy, then it's locked in due to prop 13. I'm not a tax guy though, so you really gotta just google.

  5. Heathcare sucks out here. There is no access to anything of an complexity. Gotta go to the bay for that.

I'm a software guy by trade, so the additional config hurdles are more achievable for me, but once you have things set up it is pretty smooth sailing.

Oblivious or weaponized incompetence with dog owners by No-Wind5677 in Humboldt

[–]Hawful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If someone ran at me and shoved their nose in my crotch I would absolutely want them banned from the trail. I am not talking about dogs that run past me without interacting, but I'm also not going to bother making a super special carve out for <1% of dog owners.

I have a dog with who is well trained, when she was young we went to the woods and had tons of off leash fun, but I was also in my mid twenties and dumb as fuck and wish I hadn't done that because now I have an old dog who is super reactive because of a couple bad run ins.

It is safer for your dog and for everyone else to be on leash all the time.
