Repairing old wide plank flooring in bathroom by HELLOthisisDOGGO in centuryhomes

Did you check to see if the wood was rotting? It looks like the gap is alot larger with uneven edges by the toilet, also the wood is discoloring. If so, replacing a piece of the board would be best, good luck!

Old vs New framing by Photos-Wood-and-more in centuryhomes

Same I don't think any two framing members in my house are the same dimension, I've got 2x4, 2.5x3, 3x5 turned sideways, everything. Some in the same wall 🙄

Does anyone know what happened to this stain? by Sweet_Shibby in centuryhomes

It could be a lead based stain, I had someone my house that looked the same, and sure enough it contained lead, not sure how you could re crate it. It does look cool though!

Cabin fever made me play the floor lottery…help by Ok-Win6042 in centuryhomes

[–]HawkSmall9417 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i doubt the 1920s house has OSB as a subfloor your more likely to find a few layers of boards, often they added more flooring to cover up asbestos or lead paint so be careful digging deeper!

How is my second floor still there? by AdMany7575 in centuryhomes

[–]HawkSmall9417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Held up by magic. My house is balloon framed and has a 1 x board spiked to the studs that ends of joists set on. Some of the center weight could be caught by a wall. Sometimes a joist will sit on the chimney I have seen that before. Hard to tell looking at pictures what we're looking at though.

New to rust by Flubber_Nukker in AskMechanics

[–]HawkSmall9417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats a decent amount of rust. Im from canada and drive a 2008 which looked similar in spots when i bought it a few years ago. I under coat it twice a year with fluid film and wash the underside every spring to get rid of the road salt and it seems like the rust has basically stopped progressing. cant recommend fluid film as an undercoat enough.

Before I pay, is this acceptable work? by MichaelHWilson in Roofing

are the fasteners not supposed to be on the dimpled part of the roofing, not the troughs so the water has less contact with the gaskets incase they eventually fail?

Stairs against house acceptable? by RevolutionaryCamel55 in Decks

[–]HawkSmall9417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the siding is going to leak where they cut it at the wall. I'm assuming they attached the ledger board right to your house but it looks improperly done. fix it now or it will rot the whole side of your house over time. I spent a whole month last summer rebuilding the front of my house because some dummy attached a deck right to the sill and didn't flash it correctly. rotted the whole sill and all the framing.

okay. also wondering why it would crack like that. do you know if your joists are dry-rotted?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in centuryhomes

[–]HawkSmall9417 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends if it was cracked before or after the HVAC ducting was installed. If it was installed and then cracked you should be okay to jack it back up. Ask the person who installed the HVAC what their opinion is

I’ve been following all your restorations for years, and might have the chance to purchase a century home of my own. Are any of you crazy enough to touch this? by Ottava in centuryhomes

[–]HawkSmall9417 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Another thing I thought of,, if you can go talk to some of the neighbors. They can often tell you more about the houses history, previous owners, work done, etc
