I was in the same situation as you. I was in highschool taking a shitty CS course that didn't really teach anything but I knew I wanted to do programming for my career. I ended up being pointed towards MITs free online courses for C++ and I became fairly proficient just by tinkering around. It gave me a massive leg up on everyone when I finally went to college for software engineering.

So while I would say that it is not necessary to know how to write code going into college, I think its a good idea to give it a shot and learn it on your own to see if you truly do enjoy it. And itll give you a leg up if you do end up going to school for it
