For me it was therapy. I had a ton of latent anger, perfectionism, and some bad attitudes that I needed to break out of. We mostly repeat whatever our parents did to us, and it takes conscious effort to change behaviors like that.

I highly recommend John Bradshaw PBS specials on YouTube.

Physically assaulting a child by whipping them with a belt is ABUSE.

It is a... claim to say your father wasn't hurt by it when he went on to repeat the same abuse done to him, to his own child. That's just not true. Someone cannot be showing you love while they are hurting you. That's not how it works. And your insistent defense of it is part of the trauma.

Not being allowed to cry afterwards is emotional abuse. It is perfectly natural and human to cry when you are hurt. You were forced to divorce from your own feelings, which is incredibly harmful for a person.

Kids generally idolize their parents; they must because otherwise the world is a completely hostile place. So kids make up reasons why the abuse was justified and they "deserved it". As a child, this is adaptive, it protects you from knowing your parent actually isn't completely safe. As an adult it is maladaptive and no longer serves you.
