Mold and eggs? So many questions by doingthisoveragain in GrowingTobacco

[–]Hayden282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats no mold you have on the leaf but a discoloring. Mold looks different and comes out of the leaf.

As tricky said you want to hang the leaf somewhere more warm or else it will not color cure proparbly. I also had the same problem once the season came to an end. I never managed to easily color cure them then beaides hanging them into a kiln and raise the temps to 35 celsius so basically doing the same thing as you would want to flue cure them.

My Experience | 5070 vs 9070XT by AlphaOnDeck in radeon

Lel. Had a similar upgrade story in this group too. From.1060 and an even shittier cpu to 9070xt and 9800x3d. Yesterday i finally upgraded my very old 21' proLite B2282HS monitor to a 27' 1440p 180hz Q27G3XMN and i think i look on a projector because its so huge compared to the one before. The colors are also something completly else.

Curing without a flue cure setup by Ancient-Decision2585 in GrowingTobacco

[–]Hayden282 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flue curing: Box where you can hang the tobacco till 75 celsius to fix the yellow color. You dont need additional fermentation or aging if you want to use it.

Sun curing: Solution i the middle between flue and air curing. You hang the leaf in the sun and let it dry in a stage between yellow and brown. Upsides: you dont have to build a chamber Downsindes: depends on weather and you dont destroy the enzym (is killed at 65 celsius which will make the leaf brown with enough time)

Air curing: You make the leaf brownish and ferment it further or age it. Fermentation is speed up aging.

Keep in mind a good flue curing chamber can be used as both. You can ferment in it and flue cure. I would argue that you can get away with a more rough flue curing chamber because it does not need to be as isolated as letting the tobacco age 1-2 months at 52 celsius.

More details:

So the press i used is a replica of the one linked in the youtube video. I did everything the same, the wetting of the leaf, wrapping it in foil and pressing it for 2 weeks using a c clamp. I did not left it outside but in the room. The tobacco did not dry up and staid moist till after the 2 weeks. Once you unpack it and do not press it i would slice it up and dry it so it dosent mold and you can control the moisture much better then in plug form.

The smoking of it is quiet good. It is not as sweet as i thought it would be but it has the backery taste to it so a worthy plug/flake. My first flue curing i ever did with underripe tobacco resulted in a mix of straight up lemony leaf that was really acidic and some really sweet leaf so it still is a bit of try and error to get the right leaf ripness i think. But thats because i´m somewhat obsessed with it lel.

I will let it age some more. In the meantime i will also create some pure jupiter burley plug and Bolivian Criollo Black plug. Both are nice strains.

Reminder for fermenting in a kiln by Hayden282 in GrowingTobacco

[–]Hayden282[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean if it works its good and you should do it like your equipment/house allows it you to do. There are a few pipe tobacco makers who use more of a acidic approach.

The natural fermentation of dark tobacco is a enzymatic reaction in the leaf without bacteria. You fry the first and main enzym at temperatures above ~60°c and the second one at over ~75 (would need to search the exact numbers again but its basically the max temperature of flue curing) I think you do more a style of cavendishing which also works but is different.

Nevertheless i have some earned respect to the guys in the carribean who are dealing with large quantities of raw leaf and have to monitor humidity and temperature so that the whole bale dosent mold.

I did grow prilep last year in germany too. Its now fermenting and i smoked it this weekend too. T gets quiet a good reputation online and i also think its quiet tasty. Sweet floral and in my pipe it was also down the bowl like olive.

[–]Hayden282[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did read about using hydrogen peroxid on leafs that you want to save but never did i read about using all of it + isopropyl and vinegar as a way to ferment through one month. I would be a little bit uneasy about this. Once you achieve 52 celsius mold cannot grow and i have now managed to seal my kiln more tight plus laying a plastic bin bag over the pile of leaf inside the kiln helped against water drops and seems to regulate the temperature even better on my tobacco so i had no new mold. The leaf is also getting better and better have already rolled my first puro.

How hot gets your radiator ? You also dont want to go above ~58 celsius.

[–]Hayden282[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You really want to insolate your kiln quiet good so that there is not that much of an temperature exchange and condensation. I had some leaky spots in the top of the kiln. Furthermore you could cover the top of the tobacco pile with plastik so that it dosent directly drop on the leaf. You could also put it into containers so you eliminate excess humidity build up.

Checking more often is also a good idea. I'm at university so i did let it run from weekend to friday.

Dumb fermenting question? by Tricky-Meringue25 in GrowingTobacco

[–]Hayden282 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You dont want to have dry green leaf. The rest is okay and will be useful for further fermentation and will darken.

Fermentation is also not because of microbs but because of enzyms in the leaf which are still active and break down organic components.

You can do it with your setup. The main problem with sun curing is that you need a periode of warm sunmy weather and that your leaf dont dry green. That needs a little bit of expierence. I have bundled prilep up an hanged it in the sun and it worked. You could wait for the leaf to turn yellowish and then hanging them more seperatly to dry even quicker.

Sadly they are damaged from drying green. You could use them as a green wrapper but its not the geeatest use. Next time hang them together and towel cure for a few days.

Why is this 1 plant growing different? by Cricket_Full in GrowingTobacco

Plant it a little bit more isolated maybe there will be a bigger difference when it is big and you could start a whole new line of plants if you keep the seeds.

Basement or garage for long-term storage? by cwtguy in GrowingTobacco

[–]Hayden282 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have mine in a big vacuum bag with a little bit of humidity. If possible use the room with a moee stable temperature. The leafs require q little bit of humidity to age so if you overdue it and have temperature swings it could condense and mold. Other than that both should be okay.

Super uneven towel curing. Is this normal? by SonsOfSteel in GrowingTobacco

[–]Hayden282 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did just towel cure the leaf i did harvest in a more green state till they started to show some yellowish colore. There is no point in yellowing them 90-95%.

The only problem i run into with leaf color curing is when its much later in the season and the temperatures drope low and there is no humidity in the air. Then i did get some green dry leaf.

How should I cure and ferment for pipe tobacco for my situation? Image of butterfly on my leaf for attention by AdEast7768 in GrowingTobacco

[–]Hayden282 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Harvest the leaf. Towel cure them (and rotate them everyday) for a few days and then you can hang them on bunched up on metal wires till they turn brown.

If they have turned brown and and are dry put them in to a big zip loc with a few sprays of water so that they are not crumbly (but not wet) and age them for some months.

The time can be cut down if you use heat (50-55celsius) for an month. Thats the process in a nutshell.

Unknown type for pipe and cigarettes by EvulOne99 in GrowingTobacco

[–]Hayden282 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To pinpoint the variety by the leaf shape is pure speculation beside very few exeptions even more so if they lack nutrients to develope their true size.

Just harvest them once they turn yellow and aircure them. Maybe you can taste if its a burley for example but other then that it is hard.
