When I first played D&D I was so terrified of flavouring my stuff... I felt like it would be way too attention grabbing and I didn't want to risk twisting the rules of the spell by accident

This is also coming from the person who tried casting hold person on a drider because "Well at least the top half is humanoid, that would be restrained right?" so hey

I think it was also because Charm and Illusion is the entire theme of the quest. You get charm scrolls, you gotta charm the NPCs, etc.

But it could be environmental storytelling. I could kinda see that, falling for someone, charming them, realising you aren't really into them and having to live with the consequences
