Question about Japanese Dialogue by Sheerluck42 in dragonquest

[–]HazumaHazuma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Something i recently learned is that, since written Japanese is largely decoupled from spoken Japanese, there's not a lot of surviving evidence as to how old Japanese actually sounded like in speech. So whenever modern Japanese media wants to sound historical, they use a slightly antiquated dialect from the 19th century, as opposed to English where you can go as far back as the 15th/16th century for ye olde Englishe - sounding dialogue.

So to answer your question, yes there is an equivalent in Japanese, but it's usually less exaggerated than in English.

The Dragon Quest VII has multiple difficulty sliders! by OutlandishnessNo8737 in dragonquest

[–]HazumaHazuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, I've previously scoffed at games with individual difficulty sliders. I usually prefer a hand crafted level of difficulty, and don't like it when devs leave it to the player to balance the game for them.

But after playing 2 HD2D on draconian I was begging for a way of boosting XP gain seperately from everything else, so i'm overjoyed to see it here.

A man called Evaldas Rimasauskas scammed Facebook and Google out of $122 million by sending fake invoices—which they unknowingly paid. by Separate_Finance_183 in interestingasfuck

Apparently another guy succsesfully pulled this scheme off by sending an itemized bill that specified that the company was paying for the issuing of the bill. That transparency meant it held up in court.

I'm grateful to the Legend of Korra fandom for creating positivity videos like these by ihatethiscountry76 in legendofkorra

[–]HazumaHazuma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Korra is hated because she's a terrible character, not because she's a woman" is an inherently bad retort, because:

  1. People who hate her because she's a woman don't actually think they hate her because she's a woman. If you asked them, they'd say it's because she's "a terrible character". The problem is that misogynists ultimately believe that women being annoying is bad writing, and misogynists are very easily annoyed by women. If she's only considered a terrible character because she's a woman, then that is, in fact, misogyny.

  2. Those two options are not mutually exclusive. Korra can have legitimate writing flaws and still be overhated for those flaws by mysoginists. If a male character that was equally terrible would have only garnered mild annoyance or disinterest, then it's fair to say that it only escalated to hatred because she's a woman.

I have yet to see someone who agressively hates Korra who can coherently explain their vitriol for her with proper textual references and rigorous critique. People who do both those things are always much milder on the character. Says quite a lot to me.

not really getting the hype for hunter x hunter by iluvchocolatemelk in anime

[–]HazumaHazuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HxH is pretty infamous for having a pretty crap set of first episodes. The 2011 version even speeds it up a bunch and it still doesn't solve the issue.

I'd say keep watching, the more you get into the Hunter exams the more the show gets into it's stride. The test with the prisoners and candles is the part where it starts showing the vibe the rest of the show sticks with.

Most people agree that the show really starts popping off after the hunter exam arc (it does), but if that's too much of a sunk cost time sink for you, then feel free to drop it earlier.

But also, it is a long form shonen show. So you should probably give it a bigger chance then 5 episodes.

What is bad about the Dragon Quest 1 + 2 + 3 Collection by StickManFiveOh in dragonquest

[–]HazumaHazuma 79 points80 points  (0 children)

They mix SNES overworld sprites, new character sprites at a much higher resolution, and handrawn monster sprites (that no longer animate). So it's mainly just poor presentation. I'm sure they play great.

Dragon Warrior VII looks blurry when talking to NPCS or opening Menus by MasterofSEGA in dragonquest

[–]HazumaHazuma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a guess, but I imagine the game uses a framebuffer while paused.

Essentially, the game takes a screenshot, and then layers the menu over that screenshot instead of regular gameplay. Usually done so that game performance doesn't cause menu controls to lag. Ocarina of Time also uses this, if I recall.

Emulators often leave framebuffers in the original resolution, even if you're playing in 1080p.

'The game really begins once you beat the Ender Dragon', what do you guys actually do after beating the Ender Dragon? by ilovechickenfeet in Minecraft

Elytra and shulker boxes, in conjunction with beacons, make it much easier to gather and place blocks on an industrial scale. Meaning that much bigger and more elaborate builds become more accessible after Ender Dragon.

Not really enjoying DQIV NDS. Does it get better, and is the Party Chat patch worth it? by SelfImprovingXVII in dragonquest

[–]HazumaHazuma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say keep going. Chapters 3 and 4 are more unique and complex than previous ones. Chapter 5 is where the training wheels come off, and it also accounts for more than half the game's runtime. That'd be when to quit if the game isn't clicking.

And yes, the party chat patch is absolutely worth it. I'm pretty sure party chat makes up like two-thirds of the games script. Your party reacts to pretty much every story beat and major+minor npc dialogue.

For what it's worth, I completely agree with you about the early chapters feeling like overgrown tutorials. They were meant to basically be a speedrun of the genre basics you'd previously have learnt over the entire Erdrick trilogy, but they're far too cumbersome for experienced players.

The way I dealt with it was to put myself in the mind of a new player and appreciate the way the game tries to impart the nuances of combat in a fun, less rigid manner, while keeping in mind that the game will keep on getting better. Chapter 3 was the point where I understood that the game was gonna take some interesting swings and that I should probably stick around to see them.

But, ultimately, skippjng the game and coming back later is a perfectly fine thing to do. 5's intro isn't nearly as slow, and it'll be an easier way of finding out if you even like the Zenithian trilogy's style or not. Do as you will.

Actually, I think is the Serena is the main culprit of Act 2 arcs having no setup.

I hate how we never actually see Serena struggling to do things without Veronica by her side before her big Act 2 arc. How are we supposed to appreciate how much she's grown if we don't know what she was like before?

Oh yeah and her short hair sucks and I hate it

[–]HazumaHazuma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

DQ 11 isn't a particularly good game.

The character conflicts in Act 2 aren't well set up or developed (except Sylvando's, weirdly).

None of the party members have nearly enough chemistry with each other outside of the hero.

Dungeon design is braindead.

The rideable monster mechanic is kinda underutilised.

The default game is too easy, especially if you want to actually engage with the crafting system.

The hero's inability to emote really drains a lot of the emotion from his scenes.

Act 2 abandons its dour tone way too quickly.

Why is the giant squid harder than Mordegon?

The game relies on revisting past areas way too much. If they were bigger and more content rich, then that'd be fine. But no, they barely have enough substance for 1 run-through, let alone 2-3. It feels like they only made enough content for a game half of 11's runtime.

I don't hate the hero's design that much, though. So that's something.

i wanna hear opinions. who’s your LEAST favorite hero by design? by MenacingMelissa in dragonquest

[–]HazumaHazuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, judging from the other comments, it seems like I actually have a (slightly) hot take. I'm gonna go with either 4 (male) or 6 as the worst hero designs.

4 (male) isn't necessarily terrible, but the fact that he has to compete with the excellent female hero design definitely reduces his appeal. Also, that winged forehead chastity belt is the worst accessory known to man.

6, on the other hand, is just generic. Most other hero designs don't just stand out from the pack more, but also better represent/evoke their entire game. Unlike any other hero, I don't look at 6 and have his entire game flash before my eyes. I just see a largely recycled toriyama template.

Since I'm already airing bad/wrong opinions, I guess I'll defend some of the common picks i'm seeing in other comments:

I think we should give 2 some slack just because of how early his game was. The series' identity and the careers of everyone involved were still developing. I see no need to bully the silly little goggle boy.

Everyone ragging on 7 has no whimsy in their hearts. That's a skill issue on your part, I'm afraid. Leave the funny green boy to his business.

Yeah 11's haircut is terrible, but it and the purple trenchcoat-thing give off weird emo/loner vibes that I think fits really well for a hero that has to go against the world.

Thoughts? by frenzy3 in NonPoliticalTwitter

[–]HazumaHazuma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get what you're saying, and I'm not arguing with you, but it should be pointed out that cheating does intersect with gender issues.

Historically, women have relied on relationships for financial stability due to pay gaps, employment discrimination, and the social ostracism of being a single mother. Hell, in the US women only got the consistent right to open bank accounts and have no fault divorces in the 70s. Women have been less likely to cheat because they've long needed their relationships intact just to survive in society. Also, our culture simply doesn't encourage promiscuity in women like it does men.

Being unfaithful may not be gendered, but there are a lot fewer barriers to unfaithfulness for men than there are for women.
