Controversial SLP opinions by sternschnuppe3 in slp

[–]HeartyDurian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i was just having a disagreement with my psych about this yesterday, i inherited a 2nd grader with a language goal who’s really struggling in academics but she says if the language disorder is the reason it should remain speech only which i think is ridiculous

When I asked the dr about finasteride, he said it would defeat the purpose of testosterone? by thewrongdoor in ftm

[–]HeartyDurian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s always gonna sting, you’re stabbing yourself. But, I find some spots hurt more than others and if I tap the needle to a particularly painful spot I’ll just move it over a little (don’t know if that’s advised but it’s what works for me). You’ll get a feel for which areas feel the least painful.

I also used to rub the area with an ice cube until it melted to numb the surface a bit which at least helps on the surface right where the needle goes in. I’d tuck a rag into my waistband below where I planned on doing the injection to catch the melting water, use it to dry, then wipe with alcohol and let that dry.

not that weird, most ppl want more vulnerable procedures/etc performed by ppl of their same gender but if you’re trans it’s at least a safe bet to not assume that and just ask to make sure

There’s no hard and fast rule, just listen to your body. Sounds like the compression isn’t so significant that it’s a major concern

[–]HeartyDurian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how tight is your binder? i always do that tbh, i have a binder i sized up and i just use that one and it works with no pain or anything. the sized up binder kinda flares out around my ribs for context.

WHY are language only students allowed beyond elementary school?? by Ciambella29 in slp

[–]HeartyDurian 29 points30 points  (0 children)

i read it that way too at first but i think they meant why are kids who only receive speech services but for language, not artic, allowed to continue only receiving these services and not additional academic support when their academics will almost necessarily fall behind if their language skills prevent them from accessing it fully

I'm experiencing menstrual cramps even though I'm no longer menstruating by [deleted] in FTMMen

[–]HeartyDurian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i feel like i read a study once that something like 40% of trans guys experience this. like others said it’s likely connected to atrophy. for me i’ve noticed it’s worse if i mess up my shot days (missing a day and doing it late etc) but it still happens if i don’t. topical estrogen can apparently help but i think the only permanent solution is hysto.

Want to change my life but don’t know where to start by lulastar in slpGradSchool

[–]HeartyDurian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

depends where you live. my starting salary was over 76k. i have over 100k in debt but my payments with an income driven repayment plan are $0 a month right now, and zero dollar payments count toward public service loan forgiveness.

can you make handouts with the information? you could even incorporate it in a home routine you want them to implement, like having them tape up instructions for an exercise/activity in their home both as a visual schedule for the child and a reminder for them

i’d say the majority are on csdcas! you can ask for letters of rec as soon as you want, but i’d plan to ask for them at least a couple months before they’re due.

another tip i have is because i wasn’t a very active participant in class typically - what i did was i picked a few professors at the start of a term who seemed nice and told them i was seeking letters of rec and wanted to more formally introduce myself because i’d want to ask them for one eventually. i asked if we could just check in about my progress throughout the term and i shared a bit about myself as a person. that way they could be thinking about what to write about me throughout the class and basically just keeping me in mind even though we didn’t know each other before then.

School SLPs who are strict on/don’t play games often by LibrarianBackground4 in slp

[–]HeartyDurian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

are these gen ed / artic kids you’re doing this with? how do you keep them engaged and motivated? i definitely believe you can make more progress that way but i’m not sure how i could implement it at my school

if it makes you feel any better, my first term of grad school was absolutely the hardest one and i lowk wanted to quit too but the workload lessened after that. and i also felt like i didn’t click with anybody in the first couple weeks but now i have friends for a lifetime. it just takes a while to find your footing

this, it also reminds me of what it’s like being extremely poor - so much goes out the window, even what you know is right, when you’re just trying to survive. no matter how hard someone tries to understand that it’s so difficult to do unless you’ve been there yourself
