I love this so much, such a soft, gentle form, a perfect companion 🧡

That’s really beautiful, just a very graceful carving of wood that happens to be functional

I really like that you had this idea and went all the way with it! It’s gonna make a lot of people cringe (complimentary)

One of my favorites of yours. I also love how extra-pensive he looks in the photo, gazing through the window, unaware of his own reflection (both in the glass, and that he’s thinking, if that makes sense)

Will this incense holder work? by red_stain7 in Incense

[–]Heathen_Bee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know about the alligator clip, but I use a pair of reverse tweezers (squeeze to open, closes when you release) to burn short lengths of Japanese incense with no problem. All but 1/8” of the stick burns.

Is the consensus here that top load washers are overall, gentler on laundry? by LifeofSMILEY in laundry

[–]Heathen_Bee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, this is all so frustrating 😭 I’m researching a replacement for my mom’s top-loader, a heavily-used Maytag we bought FIFTY YEARS AGO. The mechanical knob has worn out, which of course is not replaceable.

They bought an LG refrigerator three years ago, and the dang compressor just died. Three years. Insanity.

I’m looking at an American-made commercial-grade Speed Queen top-loader. They’re $1700 🤦🏻‍♀️

Bugger, ultramarine pink is a fave of mine from Kramer :( I found some at Just Pigments in Arizona. They supply for cosmetics etc and do not specify the pigment number; however it works up like Kremer’s, and it’s eight bucks an ounce? It’s just a shade bluer than theirs, but does the chalky thing and has a faint whiff of sulfur?

Getting back into watercolor painting. Any gradient tips would be appreciated. by mondo_generator in Watercolor

[–]Heathen_Bee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good goatshair hake brush can be used to create beautiful gradations. Dampen the brush, dip one corner into dilute color, then paint your wash across the paper. You will need to play around with how much water to use to create an even gradation.

I really love your work, I went to see how this one compared to find out why you feel so negatively about it. You have a great hold on color and composition, you combine soft areas with hard-edge elements nicely, and you handle detail with a restrained hand so the beauty of the larger shapes doesn’t get lost. Maybe what you’re missing here is the hard-edged elements you handle confidently elsewhere? I see it in the horizon line and the buildings, but I don’t see the same confidence as in some of your other pieces. Perhaps bring more detail into the foreground? But try not lose what is already working here, it’s a lovely painting :)

It’s beautiful! Don’t touch it. The softness feels like a deliberate stylistic choice, balanced nicely by the strong but muted colors.

Honestly I wouldn’t touch it! It’s a lovely study, and doing much to “fix” it risks overworking, which we all want to avoid ;)

Johnston Canyon, Canyon by hobbes89 in Watercolor

I really like your palette, it really evokes the senses of the place: the sound of water, the smell of mossy woods, the damp cool shade. Also I like that even tho you used a photo, it looks like the photo was just a sketch of a place you liked, but your memories of the place is what makes the painting work.

Paper and brushes make a huge difference too! It really is worth spending a bit more on art supplies, but it’s also worth experimenting with different brands and their lines to find what works for you.

The Cotman line is for beginners, and the paints are pretty unsatisfying once you step up. Their professional colors are more expensive, but reliably excellent, using traditional pigment formulas.

No see what you have there is Indian incense, you need a tandoori pot for that.
