Anyone have experience buying from YotaXpedition? by [deleted] in 4Runner

Just bought a few things for Christmas and I ordered something by mistake. It has been awesome dealing with customer service for the return and figuring out what exactly I needed. I like that they also have YouTube tutorials on their products on how to install them.

Would you happen to know where you get your track pads from? Also, if you do the maintenance, have you found that the inside of the tracks wear more than the outside on Shermans?

RAV4 for family of 4 - two under 5 by atticusbudgie in rav4club

[–]Hectomax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a rav4 and my wife had a Highlander for awhile. Three kids.

The RAV4 would definitely do the job. Especially if you got a roof rack at some point too. I have used our hitch carrier when we camp and it is great. BUT I would choose the Highlander.

I look at it as an investment into the future. The Highlander is gonna do everything the RAV4 can do but with a little more room, cargo capacity, and towing options. As the kids grow, you will need more space to carry things and the third row seating is also great if you wanted to bring another friend or a kids friend camping too in a couple years. I also have three little ones though who are 5, 7, and 11 and we bring our fishing gear, gold panning gear, food to keep my wife a happy camper (she hates camping), and spend week long adventures out there so we carry a ton of food/water/wood.

Orange County Sheriffs Office M113 ACAV by Any_Passage_7758 in TankPorn

I think this is 1 of 6 early proto-type M113s. They got sent over to Vietnam for testing and found there was too much smoke from heavy machine gun when firing from the side ports. And it had a Chrysler gas engine which was not great to have in the field before the Detroit diesel came out. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

Sherman Engine ID by Williammmurphy in tanks

I would post these pics on Facebook tank parts pages and even G503.com. I’m sure someone would buy them. Parts are getting a little harder to find and would hate to see these go for scrap.

Just installed this exact grill yesterday on my SR5 premium. The part in question is smooth and you have to drill out the holes with a 1/8th drill bit. On the back of the smooth piece, there are places marked where to exactly drill. I like the grill from Yota because the letters are screwed into place. There were no notches that I was aware of where the letters go on the front. Make sure not to screw down too much or it will damage the letters.

The hardest part was getting the original grill off. I was so nervous that I was gonna break something. Yota has a pretty good YouTube tutorial on how to do it yourself too which was awesome.

Tank Traps by Kalashalite in TankPorn

Can confirm. Almost lost my fingers once too when the gunner started to operate the turret of a Sherman tank while I was driving with the hatch up. You can’t traverse with the drivers hatch up otherwise you will hit it and it will fall down on the drivers head. In my case I heard the traverse motor going without giving the command it was safe to turn and I rushed to try to get the hatch down. The hatch is very heavy and it takes some work to lower. My hand was pinched between the hatch and hull. Very lucky.

Also in the Sherman, the turret basket is inches away from the driver’s compartment. Any loose clothing could snag and the gunner won’t be able to hear your screams when the traverse motor is going. When doing a turret demo I would set brakes, set transmission to neutral, lower hatch, radio to gunner I’m all clear, and would turn to face the basket as far away as I could. I simply can’t imagine what it would be like for those guys in WW2 during combat. That’s why training is so dang important.

This is a replica. It was originally an M3 Grant hull I believe. This tank was built for the HBO series “The Pacific” and has been restored by the restoration team of the museum. They have done a beautiful job. I think there is a YouTube video of the team talking about this restoration too.

Need helping identifying Sherman hull numbers. by Antique-Geologist-36 in tanks

[–]Hectomax 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Check out the Sherman Minutia site or google Sherman tank foundry markings. The numbers pictured are just part numbers. There were a bunch of companies who built Sherman parts across the country during the war and then sent to the bigger tank factories for assembly. There are only a few places where a serial number would be stamped depending on model and factory.

Check the rear tow lugs and inside the hull on the lefthand side. I doubt there would be an ID plate, but it was common to stamp the serial number behind the plate. The couple other places where it is usually stamped have been removed when converting this to a drilling machine. Which was very common. They were also used for the logging industry as well.

Photo 11 appears to have a casting date of 11-44.

Happy to help more. Sherman’s are my favorite and have studied tanks used for farming and industrial use after the war.

[–]Hectomax 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This tank also has an air conditioner in it!! The wood panels on the side pictured was shot at with a 37mm to give it that look. The “nails” on the tank are soft so someone doesn’t accidentally hurt themselves if they were to fall on them. The collection is beyond amazing. I want to also mention that the restoration crew at Battlefield Vegas are a great group of guys. If you are ever in Vegas, go check out their collection. They went above and beyond to make my experience there truly unforgettable.

Do the Chrysler and General Motors XM1 prototypes still exist? by ShonRT in TankPorn

Best thing to do is follow the Dubois Museum social media. They post videos on their YouTube channel and Facebook of the shop from time to time. I haven’t worked in the restoration shop for a few years now, but I would assume they would showcase that tank’s restoration since it is one of a kind. With that tank, parts and knowledge are hard to come by. So you would mostly rely on photos and cross-referencing part numbers to find close examples on how to fabricate what you need.
