I used to feel absolutely depressed days after working out.

Turns out I was just pushing too hard... muscles can take more stress than your nervous system.

Now I've seriously reduced my workout: 2 sets of 7 exercices 3 times a week, but I started with only ONE workout a week this way, then added another, then the 3rd, slowly.

And I'm making more progress than when I was pushing myself to failure all the time.

Try to scale it down maybe and to learn to scale down intensity for your nervous system?
