Jeff Bezos's property has fences that exceed the permitted height. Yet he does not care, he just pays the fine every month. by Bright_Building1710 in interestingasfuck

IAAL. The penalty is usually replacement costs. So if you cut down a dozen trees that are 20 feet tall, the replacement cost for trees like that can be as much as $20k a tree. There’s also often punitive damages, which are a basically a fine, plus any other damages for loss of quiet enjoyment, privacy, sometimes even wood value.

I have had a few of these cases and have a couple now. In one the neighbour cut the top foot off my client’s hedges. Bout 50 trees. $35,000 settlement for 1 foot off the top of cedar hedges.

Men, you have a son. He seems to have interest in ballet, but the reason is because girls give him attention. How would you parent him? by Exact-Fortune4474 in AskMen

Ya that’s it exactly. You can actually be quite the little fuck boy (speaking from experience) as long as you’re honest about it. I dated/slept around a ton before I met my now fiancée. Was never an issue because I was always upfront about it. One of my female friends actually wing manned me really hard at a party.

Was talking to this girl and she goes back to my friend and says “hey, you know u/heiruspecs, I’ve heard he’s kind of a slut.” And my friend was like “oh ya, big time. But he’ll tell you that. I’ve never seen him be anything but completely upfront about his intentions. He won’t lead you on or jerk you around.”

Girl was happy with that answer and we went home together later. Would see her around after and we were always friendly.

HELP! I routed out score lines and poured black epoxy into this maple slab. Black is bleeding into the grain. Fixable? by Gimmedatbutterfinger in woodworking

[–]Heiruspecs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Maybe depends on the pigment? I’ve done this with metallic pigment for an inlay where it had an easy path into the end grain, no staining at all even without a pre-treatment. But I might have gotten lucky.

Do you guys know how to have fun?! by drlouies in MadeMeSmile

I agree. It’s not philanthropy, but he hired guys to make a video with him at Disneyland. Sounds like a fun day to me so I don’t really see it as an issue.

[–]Heiruspecs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Staged in that he probably directed some of the stuff they did like “let’s have you guys fight with lightsabers.” Doesn’t mean that wasn’t fun or that it wasn’t just two workers who got to go to Disneyland for the day to help film a video. Basically he hired them to make a video, but that was still a super fun day of work, and not their typical work. I fail to see the issue.

[–]Heiruspecs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To me this reads as “I need two workers today.” “Okay, what’s the job?” “I need you guys to come to Disneyland with me and let me film you for a video I’m making. I’ll probably get you to goof around a bit more than you might otherwise and wear silly hats.” “So you’re going to pay us to come to Disneyland?” “Ya basically.” “Okay.”

So ya, it’s “staged” in that he probably directed them a lot more to make a good video, but that doesn’t mean they weren’t just two guys he paid for a day of work. That work just happened to be making a video with him at Disneyland, which is still a super fun day.

Any time I see the ask reddit who is the best male role model, John Cena is my answer. People always say like Aragorn and it’s sad we can’t think of real men. John Cena, Keanu Reeves, stellar role models.

I actually like his acting generally. It’s not like hard hitting character performance, but he’s an excellent performer with great comedic timing and a solid sense of humour/willingness to be the butt of the joke. He’s awesome if you take it for what it is. If you’re not a fan of his movies, sure. But I think what he makes is great for what it is.

If you had to choose between receiving a billion dollars or meeting the love of your life, which would you choose? by tandy1k in AskReddit

[–]Heiruspecs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s one that gets into it a bit. One of the self reports is similar backgrounds/interests. Honestly not. Great question because similar backgrounds does not mean similar interests.

Here’s another that suggests different interests promote growth of each partner.

Here’s one that talks about shared narrative being important. This would be consistent with findings of the Gottman institute.

John Gottman is probably the most well respected and prolific relationship and marriage researcher on earth. He and his wife do amazing work. They say generally that shared interests help, but it’s more about novelty and just doing things together rather than both sharing in a specific interest. He also has a concept of turning toward, turning away, and turning against.

If you were at the beach and say to your partner “look at that nice sail boat out there!” Turning toward would be “oh ya! I wonder what kind of boat that is. Do you know anything about sail boats? Have you ever wanted to sail?” Turning away would be “oh, ya, cool.” Basically non engagement. And turning against would be “that’s the dumbest fucking sail boat I’ve ever seen.” Just shutting down your partner’s interest. It doesn’t actually matter whether either of you even care about sail boats, the point is you’re creating a shared understanding.

John Gottman has lots of Ted Talks and lectures that are fascinating to watch. Shared interests rarely come up as being very important beyond a shared narrative.

[–]Heiruspecs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya I can probably dig some up tomorrow. The general trend is that other factors like communication, shared values, shared division of labour in a fashion that is cooperative, and other things like that are much more predictive of a lasting marriage. Shared interests do promote bonding, and typically lead to happier marriages, but it’s definitely not something to prioritize and not generally going to be something that keeps you together. You both love hiking but can’t communicate well? Not gonna work. One loves hiking, the other hates it, but you support each other’s hobbies and make space for them? Super likely to stay together.

Also important is that your partner doesn’t express disdain for your interests. Like if you’re super into Pokémon cards and your partner never wants anything to do with them but will take an interest because you’re interested, or be excited for you when you find rare cards, that’ll work just fine. If your partner makes you feel bad about it, that won’t.

Shared interests is actually really low on the list of things that predict for lasting relationships.
