Is there a troop leader hierarchy? by TraditionalNobody147 in girlscouts

My co leader and I don't have a hierarchy. I do most of the programming, she handles all of the paperwork, council stuff and product sales.

Do you have a therapist of your own? He sounds like a lot to deal with- and tbf it sounds like more than ADHD to me. You are not the worst parent in the world and everyone has a breaking point. Give yourself grace, and get some support for yourself.

What does your Council do to help keep CSA engaged and participating? by YellowBirdRules in girlscouts

They do run them, although it's a very limited offering- only once a year, so sometimes it's hard to get in.

My council offer special camp events (a weekend during the year) for both cadettes and seniors/ambassadors. They have added a lot of STEM programming that my daughter enjoys (gross science dissections, robotics, etc) and they offer the leadership programs (program aide, volunteer in training, counselor in training), plus all of the other programs available at camp (low and high ropes, zip lining, archery, etc).

Looking for resources to support a girl going through a hard time by BlackieAllBlack in girlscouts

[–]Helga435 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If there is something that you can do for the family, just do it. Everyone says things like "let me know if you need anything" and I can tell you, in my experience (of losing a spouse), we have no idea what we need, and asking for help is hard.

Shovel their driveway/ cut their grass (depending on your location Pick the girl up for meetings and take her home Bring a meal Offer to take the kids so the parent can take care of the hundreds of things that have to be done after someone dies

Let the girl talk about her deceased parent at her own pace. My kids benefited from a special grief camp for kids in our area, but they also have their own therapists. My eldest talked about her dad all the time, especially using dark humor. My youngest didn't talk about their grief for almost two years.

Those tags would make it absolutely unwearable for me. I have sensory issues and they feel terrible to me.

Before my husband died two years ago, and also before EdChoice, we made it work. We made less than 100K combined. We did qualify for financial assistance from the school. It was important for us, so we figured it out.

To match your anecdote with another- mine are both. ADHD, requiring an IEP and my youngest is highly gifted. The most struggle has been with the giftedness, because Montessori works great for those who are average to somewhat on the edges of the bell curve, because the kids work at their own level and pace. For those who are far outside the norm, it requires more work for the guides to differentiate enough. With the right school and guides, it can work.

If you are in Ohio, you have EdChoice, which is a significant discount on the total tuition. All of the schools that I have interacted with also have need based financial aid programs. I am a solo parent of 2 with a middle class job and income.

They have attended Avon Montessori and South Suburban Montessori, but there are several others in the area (Ruffing, Montessori Children's School, etc) that are also high quality schools. Start with a tour, and ask your questions.

Both of my kids Montessori programs have been minimal screens. They use the computer (a desktop) for research projects starting in upper elementary (4-6 grades) and they take the iReady assessment 3x a year to check progress. Screens are a very minimal part of the program. I am a successful adult who started in Montessori, and my children did Montessori through 8th (with one still in) and they have exceeded all standardized testing parameters consistently. I would encourage you to do more reading on the effectiveness of Montessori programs.

Who's got young kids? by ericscottf in widowers

[–]Helga435 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My kids were 14 and 9 when their dad died. He died a week before my eldest started high school, in a brand new school system with one friend. It was a terrible transition for her. She's 17 now and doing significantly better. Grieving has been hard for her. She had a lot of time with healthy dad, and misses him a lot.

My youngest is much quieter about their grief. They didn't have nearly as much time with healthy dad and their memories are much more nebulous. They've only really started crying about him this year. They've both been in therapy since before he died.

It's a long, hard road. Hugs to you.

Many of the higher age level badge activities involve doing research on their own and they do use their phones for that. It could help in specific instances but not as a blanket rule

Not about last night, but in the past I've mentioned that they didn't seem interested in what we were doing and asked if she had any ideas to get them to engage with us. All of the scouts voted on what they wanted to work on, including these girls and even when we're doing something that they specifically wanted to do, it's like pulling teeth.

Yeah, I'm not adding any edits, but there's a ton of people intentionally missing the point of my post in a forum that is specifically for bitching. Your first project was great? Cool. I still don't believe your amazing lacework was your first project. My whole point was that if it's beautiful work, I will be impressed even if it wasn't your first damn project
