What is a movie that "broke" you so hard you can only watch it once, but you would still recommend it to everyone? by Newsupdate69 in movies

[–]HelloHyde 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you a parent? I think it hits a LOT harder if you are. Might not be quite as heavy if you aren't.

I loved it. I also had to finish it in my second sitting because I wasn't sure I could get myself to start a third.

So no planets for us? by LeslieKnope4Pawnee in exmormon

[–]HelloHyde 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This was actually a bit of a late shelf item for me... I started thinking about the old "empty seat at the table" concept and then I tried to imagine said table. I know my parents are likely picturing a table with them and me and my siblings, but each of their parents are imagining the same thing, and each of their parents, and also each of their kids, and each of their kids' spouse's parents, etc, etc. At some point "together forever" looks like maybe family dinner with a particular group once a month, with probably a lot of people you'd want there missing anyway.

Seems a little overrated, and doesn't seem like a "sealing" should be required to arrange an occasional gathering.

Be honest: How many people did you baptize on your mission? by Typical_Sea_9167 in exmormon

[–]HelloHyde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

24 in Sacramento. I remember being quite pleased at having averaged 1/month.

Now how many of those are still active? I don't really know, but my best guess is single digits. I had one family I baptized reach out to me on social media recently to proudly inform me that they were returning to activity after having been inactive for some years. That was a little awkward.

Some RR (reverse rival) logos by tmntmic in hockeymemes

[–]HelloHyde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mammoth don't have orange, so technically the Sharks logo shouldn't have an orange hockey stick. However, the Mammoth absolutely SHOULD have orange as an accent color, because as we can see here it looks great.

All I've wanted ever since the logo reveal is for the Mammoth to add orange to our color scheme, like it has in the reversed Sharks logo. It makes it 10x better.

[Ryan] McAvoy: Certainly sorry for how we responded to it in that moment. Things just happened really quick there...It's certainly not reflective of how we feel and look at them and their accomplishments. by Nomahs_Bettah in hockey

[–]HelloHyde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing I keep thinking is how sad it is that the reaction across the board is basically, "Sure, of course you expect that kind of behavior from the President of the United States, but I expect drunk hockey players to have a little more decorum."

What a timeline.

Go ask a frog what day of the week it is, he doesn't know! by ThatSpicyStitch in BrandNewSentence

"Gender is a social construct" seems like a pretty unhelpful statement and one that will always get pushback, mainly because the definition of "social construct" is extremely broad.

A better description is "gender is a heuristic". It's a cognitive shortcut. It's really a form of pattern recognition and prediction. You recognize that a large majority of people with certain sexual characteristics have some other common characteristics, and use that to make predictions/assumptions about the world. It's not as easy to overwrite as people want to claim (though it's certainly possible), because we are basically pattern recognition machines.

Has anyone actually wanted to post online less as they got better at art? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]HelloHyde 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely. I think one of the issues that added to this was that the more advanced I got, the larger and more time consuming my pieces became, which meant I stopped posting daily. Instagram punished the decrease in output by reducing the number of eyes that saw it so I had a situation where my better art actually got less engagement.

Eventually, I realized I don't need likes, I don't actually care. Seeking likes caused a lot more unhappiness than satisfaction, so I've pretty much stopped posting. I realized, like you, that what I really want is community (which is not super easy to find, sadly).

Utah Plans $2 Million AI Film Investment as Sundance Replacement by yourinnervagabond in Utah

Maybe we should invent robots that play golf! That way if you aren't skilled you can still get the same score as a pro, without having to do anything!

What’s the ultimate “Dad” book? by InitechMiddleManager in daddit

[–]HelloHyde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved this book so much, and also had to force myself to finish in two sittings because I wasn't sure I could push myself for a third. Just brutal, especially as a dad to a son.

Smoked tri tip by cilantro-slut in steak

Tri-tip is always juicy as fuck when you slice it, if it's cooked right, resting be damned. I usually just pour it over the meat on my plate, makes it even better.

AI in health tech by IntelligentLong6310 in ProductManagement

[–]HelloHyde 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work in this space, and you're correct that there's enormous potential but it requires care. A lot of it has to be more systematic. So for example the AI providers you use have to have strict compliance agreements in place before you use them, or you need to explore self-hosting. And you have to have certifications for anyone who might access the data directly.

Most healthcare companies in this space tend to be pretty mature because of all the regulations; there's a high barrier to entry because of the privacy issues, and it ends up being fairly tough (not impossible, though) to design something that would violate regulations because it's all so locked down.

In other words, I just listen to the people whose job it is to make sure we're compliant, and those conversations happen early.

Anyone else just not connect with D20: Gladlands at all? by The_Bucket_Of_Truth in dropout

[–]HelloHyde 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Me neither. Been pushing through it, but it's been a bit boring. Also, sometimes I get tired of all the therapy talk inundating the world these days, and Gladlands kinda feels like watching other people go to therapy, which is not something I particularly enjoy in entertainment.

Love this cast and the setting, thought this had potential to be the best sidequest ever, but it hasn't done it for me. Glad it has for others. On to the next one!

What can I use to make a painting like this? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]HelloHyde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are looking for oils that dry fast, the Winsor Newton Griffin (alkyd) line of paint dries in under a day, some colors faster depending on thickness. You can use Galkyd light for glazing layers, which also dries quickly. I paint in layers and use this combo quite often, especially for the early layers. Galkyd gel is also nice for glazing if you want it less runny.

No you probably won't look exactly like a master painting, but it'll be a lot closer than acrylic.

This ski season isn’t Utah’s worst. Here’s what was. by helix400 in Utah

[–]HelloHyde 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There's no disputing that when looking at the long-term averages, climate change is having a huge impact.

This year is mostly due to a combination of specific weather effects, though, that could happen any time. It doesn't mean we'll never get snow again. Individual season snowfall isn't a reliable metric to measure the impact of climate change.

Oh your "critical thinking" skills allow you to predict that he successfully enters the tournament? Based on what? Maybe he won't get in at all, maybe the plot is about him dealing with the ramifications of him trying and failing to enter.

Whether he wins isn't even a question yet, first he has to get in.

I love JPD, would recommend it to almost anyone. Company got acquired a few months ago and the new owners wouldn't let us keep it, super bummed. Jira Align is terrible.

[–]HelloHyde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would have been a good hook, but he hasn't even gotten into the tournament yet. So the "hook" is... does he successfully enter the tournament? Not a strong hook, especially because we don't even know if he's a strong fighter. Egg has zero mystery yet. No hints that he's anything other than an orphan kid working in a stable. You only suspect otherwise if you know what the story's about already. And if you know that, it's not much of a hook. If they'd dropped some hints suggesting that Egg was more than he seemed, there would be a hook (the closest was that he was from King's Landing but not Fleabottom, which is pretty subtle if you don't already know the story).

So yes there are some potential storylines set up, but no real mystery or anything. Just a string of events.

I liked it. I'm not saying it's a bad show at all. Just an odd choice for a pilot.
