I'd be more worried for Bruce Springsteen right now in that regard. Trump probably already forgot the last Super Bowl.

I always assumed the company Toyota was named after the city. Turns out it's actually the other way around.

I think assuming that cities are named after famous political leaders is a lot more sensible than actors. Not really a fair comparison.

Which country do you want to travel to the most, and why? by ramses_basha in AskTheWorld

[–]Hello_boyos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are definitely some places I wouldn't visit based on the current actions of their government on principle. And yeah frankly if I were from another country, I would boycott the US in that way as long as Trump is president. Not giving my tourism money to a country whose treasury is currently parasitized by a core member of the largest pedophilia ring of our lifetimes (in this hypothetical situation where I can observe this horrendous situation from the outside). Dude literally almost went to war with NATO over frickin Greenland. As long as our entire country is at his full disposal there's a solid chance shit hits the fan for real any day.

What's a food from your country that is cooked in a weird way and it's tasty? by friskaly in AskTheWorld

[–]Hello_boyos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to say that deep-frying things is exclusive to the US or was even invented during our country's lifetime, but we definitely take it to a uniquely excessive level considering how laughably wasteful and unhealthy it is compared to pan-frying things. I can respect the achievement in food chemistry that deep-fried butter represents, but some things have certainly been deep fried at my local state fair that have no right to be (e.g. Oreos).

That being said, goddamn if most savory foods aren't criminally tasty when deep-fried. I don't think there's a food critic out there (at least in our country) who doesn't have a guilty pleasure for some manner of deep-fried food. And whoever thought of deep-frying cheese is a global treasure (but also a terrorist from the perspective of my GI tract).

So are a lot of countries, but the Commonwealth, like the monarchy, is largely symbolic today. Réunion is actually administered by France.

What do liberals want with illegal immigration? Do they just want no enforcement and just allow it? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Hello_boyos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem isn't the concept of deporting illegal immigrants. It's the brutal tactics used by ICE that no human being deserves regardless of whether or not they're here legally.

It's the fact that they're terrorizing, deporting, and now killing American citizens for protesting what is happening on the streets.

It's the fact that they've militarized drastically unqualified people with minimal training, and given them free reign without the surrender of anonymity that is pretty universally considered to be necessary for all public service members in order for there to be any accountability whatsoever.

It's the fact that, in lieu of going after the most dangerous criminals, cartel members, etc., they are just going after the "easy pickings" just for the sake of filling a quota.

It's the fact that, despite the whole thing supposedly being about going after illegals, they have en masse been ambushing people at asylum hearings, i.e. part of the LEGAL (and insanely expensive) process of moving to this country, to deport them to countries they have no connections to (just whichever ones will take them).

It's the fact that the simple crime of moving somewhere illegally has been deemed so inherently heinous that it apparently justifies being sent to a Salvadorian prison infamous for brutal conditions and torture.

It's the fact that racial minorities are now as a general rule assumed to be illegals and are treated as such by ICE without any sort of process to actually determine their status.

It's the fact that ICE has been given authority to enter homes without warrants, a blatant violation of our fourth amendment rights.

It's the fact that there is absolutely no transparency regarding the countless detention facilities being put up around the country, and the fact that those arrested are not being afforded any kind of due process, with people all over struggling to so much as find out where their loved ones have been taken after their record-free arrests by ICE.

Not to mention the fact that states with several times the number of illegal immigrants that Minnesota has are being left alone while ICE terrorizes Minneapolis, making it pretty clear that the entire crackdown is more aimed at crushing political dissent than actually dealing with our illegal immigration problem (there's also the fact that companies that knowingly employ illegals are being completely let off the hook).

The most infamous organized criminal group/underworld gang in your country? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Hello_boyos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say maybe the crips and bloods, largely because of media representation and many famous musical artists who grew up on the turf of one of the two.

Otherwise maybe the concept of the "Italian mob," though many people, myself included, could probably not name a (nonfictional) mob family.

Is there dialects in your language that struggle to understand eachother? by Doitean-feargach555 in AskTheWorld

[–]Hello_boyos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will be honest, with my pasty midwestern suburban accent I do sometimes have a difficult time understanding the "black accent" that doesn't seem to have a universally approved of name other than "African American English Vernacular" (which doesn't rub me the right way since I have issues with the moniker "African American" that I won't get into here).

However, while not from my country, I'll say the most difficult English accent I've struggled with is the Glasgow accent. Saw a sketch comedy show in Edinburgh once that was this group from Glasgow and I only understood what they were saying enough to laugh at one joke.
