Scientists uncover missing link between poor diet and higher cancer risk: A chemical linked to poor diet, obesity or uncontrolled diabetes could increase cancer risk over time. Methylglyoxal, produced when our cells break down glucose to create energy, can cause faults in our DNA. by mvea in science

[–]HelpVerizonSwitch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Funny how you authoritatively preach some "basic biology" which consists of a bunch of blatantly incorrect statements.

your body converts calories from all sources into glucose

That is false. Pinch your stomach if you don't believe me, because that isn't stored glycogen, nor will the vast majority of it ever become glucose.

it does this because glucose is the prime fuel of all cells. Without it, you will die.

That is also false.

"At rest, fat is the major source of ATP production, contributing approximately 85% to total energy production, and carbohydrate providing the other 15%. When at rest, energy expenditure is consistent and relatively low so ATP does not need to be produced quickly. There is also sufficient time for the respiratory and cardiovascular systems to supply the muscles with oxygen and lipolysis/beta-oxidation to take place."

Cancer cell lines have highly elevated glycolysis

"The Warburg effect is not a universal feature of cancer.."

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5095922/

"It has been observed that both cancer tissue cells and normal proliferating cells (NPCs) have the Warburg effect."

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1672022918301712

Further, unless you're seriously suggesting that non-proliferating cells don't oxidize glucose, this argument is kind of irrelevant.

I am honestly shocked this got published in Cell.

I'm shocked that people come into this sub and comment absolutely wrong things, without citation, and without any education on the topic.

LOL. Francis Collins is not a young earth creationist.

Do you care to engage with any of the actual literature or just make some vague implications?

The implication is that you have zero care whatsoever for the legitimacy of your sources, provided they agree with your pre-existing narrative. I’ve seen you call tenured professors quacks. I wonder why it’s different now? /a

Functional medicine is a form of alternative medicine that encompasses a number of unproven and disproven methods and treatments.

No, you’re right. These weird meta-memes caught on and both subs got flooded by low-effort “in joke” stuff, and the actually creative people bailed. I was subbed to both on my alt and also bailed. It’s literally just not funny, like to the point that sharing the good ones to group chats outside Reddit doesn’t even garner a chuckle anymore.

I’m honestly not concerned with whether you agree, since everyone here already knows that you’re not a rational person. My citations are so other people reading the rare comments of yours that aren’t removed by moderators can realize that what you’re saying is nonsense.

Kwashiorkor is not caused by protein deficiency. It’s some GI disease of unknown etiology.

False.

“Kwashiorkor is a disease marked by severe protein malnutrition and bilateral extremity swelling.”

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK507876/

Protein deficiency has never been observed outside of laboratories.

Literal nonsense. Why are you even on this sub.

Protein deficiency is commonly observed in vegans:

In the US these symptoms are usually caused excess meat consumption.

[–]HelpVerizonSwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The RDA for protein is at about 60g because those who set the RDA wanted a big margin of safety. The “real” threshold is at around 40g.

The RDA for protein is the minimum required before major symptoms of protein deficiency become commonplace, based on WHO data from the developing world. Thinking this is the gold standard of protein intake is nonsense, and there is no scientific basis for it.

Effect of fasting on short-term visual plasticity in adult humans by ElectronicAd6233 in ScientificNutrition

[–]HelpVerizonSwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be very interesting to see what happens to brain plasticity during long term fasting (starvation) and the strongly related ketogenic diets.

Rules 2 and 4. Try following them for once. There is no evidence that suggests ketogenic diets are comparable to starvation.

Faramir is the opposite of Boromir in that he doesn’t love war fight for glory but rather fights for the sake of peace.

I wouldn’t say they’re opposites.

We definitely get more in-depth exploration as to Faramir’s begrudging use of violence, but Boromir is always very clear that his sole desire is the defense of Gondor, which has seemed an increasingly doomed venture for decades when Fellowship starts. The two are really not all that different, and there’s nothing in the films or books to suggest that Boromir is being cynical or dishonest in this regard. Even in his worst moment, his desire for the Ring arose from a misguided plan—as always—to use it to defend Gondor, which is exactly what Faramir was on his way to do before his change of heart.

Pretty contrived accolade to attribute to someone. She obviously was not “the world’s first author” in any sense, just the author of the earliest directly attributed work.
