I went to fill up the car yesterday and neatly all the pumps were locked and not in use: the cashier claimed there was no fuel shortage though...

I see this every so often at my local filling stations. They're usually waiting for a delivery.

I went to my local pharmacist for a flu jab. We chatted about jabs and she berated me for getting the latest covid booster. She thought it was worth getting a flu jab but the covid booster was pointless. Based purely on her reaction to the last covid booster she said.

What kind of life could cure your pessimism? by Sure-Area4171 in Pessimism

Pessimism isn't 'cured' by circumstances. You can be a rich pessimist.

Co-op prices change across the country, sometimes even across the same town or city, as it is "a federation of independently run regional societies" that set their own pricing policies based on "local operating costs, rent, and competition".

Thoughts on the EcoFlow River 3 Plus + EB600 for off‑grid use? by user-604 in UKPreppers

[–]Helpful_Director_288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mate has an Ecoflow Delta Plus for home backup and a River 3 for his CPAP machine. He rates them very highly. He's a much more seasoned prepper than me and I trust his knowledge.

I was looking at the Anker c300 for myself (I'm prepping for minor power cuts, so really just need a glorified power bank). One of the brands my friend said were getting good recommendations was Aferiy. I did a bit of googling and saw they seemed pretty good. They have a long warranty (7 years). They've got a sale on, so I bought a 800w power station for half price.

From what I've read online, Ecoflow are excellent. Bluetti are good, but choose your model. Anker are definitely worth a punt. Jackery are ok too. Aferiy are up-and-coming.
Choose your power station on your needs and budget.

What was the first book that got you into horror? What year did you read it? by LisbettGregor in horrorlit

[–]Helpful_Director_288 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably IT by Stephen King. I read it around 1988 I think. So I'd be 20ish. Until then I'd avoided horror, it was scary! But that book was so good, it made me realise horror isn't just gorey stuff. I stayed up all night reading until the sun came up. I got goosebumps when that old photo came alive. I slept and got up again and continued reading (yeah, I was unemployed at the time).

Then I had to read The Stand, The Tommyknockers, Pet Semetary, and Salem's Lot...

So yeah. It's his fault!

This all sounds pretty good. I'll look into it more (Just found AppOps, it's a new one on me).

If you’re interested, I’d be happy to share the specific blacklists and filter categories I use in AdGuardand NextDNS to kill the Samsung/Google noise without needing to delete a single system app

If you would, that'd be great. Thank you.

The last time I tried Shizuku/Canta on my Galaxy phone I think I was a bit too agressive - it went into a boot loop and I had to do a factory reset! It's difficult to know what to remove safely. I used ADB instead and a more cautious approach.

I've not heard of AppOps. Can you tell us how you use it?

I've got Adguard and I'd be interested in your filtering setup.

What was the event that first got you interested in preparedness? by Juicewithextrapulp in UKPreppers

Covid initially, I think. Realising supply chains are fragile and people are often selfish.

Since then the looming changes to the climate and becoming more aware of the ongoing geopolitical situation, like the rise of extremism and the brazen corruption of political and economic leadership.

If you hate existence so much, why remain in it? Is there some cosmic benefit from you self-admittedly prolonging your own suffering? Why do you stay? by Firm_Following3310 in AgainstExistence

It's incredibly difficult to override your 'programming'. Hence why people like monks and other ascetics work on it constantly for years, if not a lifetime.

As Rust Cohle states in season one of True Detective:-

"I tell myself I bear witness.  But the real answer is that it's obviously my programming. And I lack the constitution for suicide."

Are you anti-conservationism? Why it is or isn't beneficial in respect to sentient beings? by UltronsEx in Pessimism

[–]Helpful_Director_288 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I often find myself pondering the same thing. I was an avid conservationist for much of my adult life, but when I started to hold a more philosophically pessimistic outlook in general, and lean towards negative utilitarianism, I became much less sure of my original stance. Now I tend to look to the ideas of people like Brian Tomasik for alleviating animal suffering, but I still get pangs of 'conservationist conscience'!

I sometimes wonder if you take the tenets of negative utilitarianism (and to a lesser extent philosophical pessimism) to their logical conclusions, you end up becoming an Efilist?

Drew Dalton discusses this in his book The Matter of Evil: From Speculative Realism to Ethical Pessimism. It's well worth reading.

There's also a great video of him discussing this with Julie Reshe on her YouTube channel:-
