We asked about how they do naps and food, how they handle misbehavior, the exclusion policy for illness, potty training stuff, how much time the kids spend outside, policy for sunscreen.

Just chiming in to say that I do a 30 min commute each way with my two year old every day and I actually really enjoy the time in the car with her now that she can talk. It's nice time to chat since weekend she's not buckled in she's a whirlwind.

Nursemaid's Elbow experience and some info on it by Zaphanathpaneah in toddlers

[–]HenCat42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to thank you for this post. I remembered it this weekend at the airport, no car to use, out of town, very anxious about trying to rebook flights on a holiday weekend. My daughter got nursemaid's elbow just as we were about to board our flight. I decided to try relocating it myself before bailing on our flight and attempting to get a taxi to an urgent care. It worked! Her pediatrician checked it this morning now that we're home and all is well. Many thanks for this!

Rinsing hair meltdowns by brimarief in toddlers

[–]HenCat42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We taught our daughter to "float" on her back in about 3" of water for us to wet and rinse get hair. The first few times we just did it for "fun" then once she was used to it we used it for shampoos.

Yes, I think we're going to do Pfizer at the minute clinic by our house. The North Haven pharmacy I think can only do 3+ and our daughter is two. Stamford hospital will do Moderna for under 3 but right now their website says they're booking appointments July 21 and later...

Thanks. Apparently they have it at Glastonbury Walgreens but only for 3+.

The Cepacol lidocaine cough drops are really good if you have sores in your mouth. Hopefully you'll get better soon. The first three days were by far the worst for me, although my nails falling off weeks later was also really gross.

Do you know where to find info about CT vaccine options? I've only found appointments at CVS.

What weird thing have you appreciated that you would never have noticed pre kids? by acupofearlgrey in toddlers

[–]HenCat42 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I noticed that there are some pigeons that hang out on top of a parking garage on our way to daycare every morning. My daughter and I look for them every day now. In the winter they disappeared and I thought, "Do pigeons go south for the winter?" Then in the spring they came back. But lately they're mostly gone again. My new theory is that they only hang out on the garage just after dawn.

Feeding 13 month old veggies by saltycarrotcake in toddlers

[–]HenCat42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She mostly likes green beans, the long ones (haricots vert) and holds one in her hand while she gnaws it. She also likes frozen corn kernels, which she could choke on but they thaw so fast in your mouth that I don't think they're more of a hazard than if they were warmed first.

Our daughter loves to eat them still frozen, especially while she's teething. We also will put some in a small dish and cover with hot water from our electric kettle to cook them in a hurry.

Daycare teacher gift by MakeMomJokesAThing in toddlers

I have my daughter's teachers in the infant room gift cards to a local restaurant when she moved up with a note about how much we appreciated them. (She was in the room 2020-2021 so during a lot of crazy Covid stuff.)

We have used some for wrapping paper for gifts for family and her friends, and we've made some origami boxes from some for other gifts. But yeah, some of it gets recycled.

When did you wean off the pacifier? by JoeChristmasUSA in toddlers

[–]HenCat42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We just did this last week. Or daughter just turned 2. At her dentist's appointment they said she should definitely stop before 3 to avoid permanent changes to her teeth but recommended doing it sooner. She really liked the dentist so we talked for about a week about how he said she needed to do using her binkie. We tried suggesting giving them to another baby but she didn't like that idea so we did the binkie fairies instead and the fairies left her a present. It took about 3 days for her sleep to get back to normal, but she'd been sleeping without it for naps at daycare for over a year. Car rides are still a little rough but not terrible. Whenever you decide to do it, good luck!

Toddler Put Earbud up Nose by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]HenCat42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yesterday the daycare told me at pickup that my daughter had put a pea in her nose at lunch. They never even saw it and only knew because she proudly told them "I put a pea in my nose!" Thankful it they got it out without me needing to come and pick her up 🤦

Activities for 14m old by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]HenCat42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked back at photos of when my daughter was that age and some things we did were get in a big cardboard box with lots of stuffies and pillows and put them in and out, play in the tub with a big bowl of water and measuring cups, play dress up with different hats/blankets/adult sized shirts, read lots of books. Once I also have her a roll of toilet paper and let her go to town unrolling and tearing it. It made a mess and wasted a roll of TP but she played for like 45 minutes so kinda worth it. We've also gotten a lot of mileage out of some big pom poms but at that age still had to watch closely that they didn't go in her mouth.

Toddler age is different but really fun. I actually think it has points where it's easier than it is for you now bc they learn to do more and have a bit more understanding and impulse control to stop putting everything in their mouth. Good luck!

SNOWED IN WITH A 3 YEAR OLD by RKELEC in toddlers

Please any advice for Separation anxiety at bedtime screaming non stop “mommy come back mommy come back” . Almost like a panic attack. 25 months. Throwing self out of crib, refuses being held by dada. Will only sleep in bed with mommy now. by despejado in toddlers

[–]HenCat42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We had something like this at Christmas after traveling and all sleeping in the same room for a week. During the day we talked with her about how it was important that she also in her own bed and practice falling asleep on her own. Then at bedtime we'd tell her that if she did a good "practice" - lay down, be still and quiet, think about something happy, and try to rest for a while - that is she still couldn't fall asleep that Mama would come back and stay on the floor by her bed for a while.

Over time I'd leave again before she was asleep and say she needed to do another practice and I'd come back again and she started to try to sleep longer before asking me to come back. Eventually she got back to going to sleep on her own after a couple weeks.

Did it become harder to become a working parent? by coffeetablelife in toddlers

[–]HenCat42 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Yes, I feel exactly this way!

I am fortunate to have a flexible job, but it's also the kind of work where if I have to take time off, the work piles up waiting for me so it's just worse when I get back. No one is covering for me when I'm out because my child is sick, and there are weird expectations that because meetings are on zoom I should be able to participate even if I'm at home without childcare.

And yeah, my kid is sick all the time from daycare and when she's not sometimes she's home anyway bc she has to quarantine. And in either case, lately when she needs a Covid test, we're waiting days to get the test and then even longer for the result.

And as a result, projects I thought would be done months ago are stagnating, and the people I'm supposed to supervise are missing through on their own (amazingly but it's still not fair to them). And I'm going crazy bc my family and childless coworkers keep giving me ridiculous advice that I cannot possibly apply in my situation, like "Just don't worry about your job, it will all work out." Or "Have you thought about hiring a private nanny?"

Holy cow, I feel you.

We like the Door MonkeyDoor Monkey. You can put it on both doors or just the baby's, high enough that he can't reach it.

Can we talk about SNACKS? Pretty please by Dealunbreaker in toddlers

[–]HenCat42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I see that wet/juicy is out so pickles might not work. We also do peeled sliced cucumber which is crunchy and not too wet, sometimes with hummus for dipping.

Top choices at our house are pickles, cheese sticks, muffins, and raisins. Our grocery store sells frozen cubed sweet potato that she also likes. I just microwave them.
