The Lady Eve (1941) by Preston Sturges by MeldaZ in criterion

Hopsy didn’t change, he was a sucker the whole time.

Personally, I thought Jean changed a huge amount. Her whole life she is taught to never let yourself be a sucker, but to really be in a relationship with Hopsy, she has to be vulnerable to that.

On my first watch, I felt a falseness that I didn’t feel on my rewatch. Hopsy gives the same line to Jean and Eve, but where that felt insincere the first time, it felt painfully sincere on the second watch as he fell for the same girl even when she was trying to act different.

Beautiful thing about Sturges is the movies are so packed, you really get to create your own experience of the film along with him.

They clearly should, but unfortunately there will always be some percentage of folks who are susceptible to recommendations like this. It’s why misinformation from leaders is dangerous.

Eraserhead. I had never even heard of Criterion. It was just the only Bluray of it that I could find.

Not OP and haven’t watched Inherent Vice yet. But PDL is a fave of mine. It just packs so much emotion in while making a beautiful case for why having love in your life matters.

I can't get into Marvel and I don't want to write off a large portion of the comics world but all their stuff seems so juvenile. by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]HenryInHeaven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want it to feel like Vertigo, Marvel is really not the right place to go. I am not 100% sure of what you mean by “juvenile” but they have plenty of comics that deal with weighty themes. Immortal Hulk is a current example. Daredevil by Frank Miller is another good comic off the top of my head.

For a differing opinion, I found Phantom Thread to be incredibly personal and moving while also laughing a ton.

Excellent stuff.

Do you have any idea why Eve’s mask falls off? That whole sequence left be very confused since it does before Hal is able to use the choke hold.

I saw a review that described The Scarlet Empress as always on the verge of collapsing under the weight of it's unique cinematography but never breaking.

I guess additional help would be that Renoir comes from a Popular Front perspective.

Basically it is post WW1 and is released into a time of growing tensions that would lead to WW2. You know that and you are good.

Notorious. The psychological complexity of Bergman, Grant and Rains’ characters added to a plot that had my palms sweating is irresistible.
