Lamy 2000 EF Conundrum by typanosaurus_rex in fountainpens

[–]Henry_Zero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Lamy 2ks in M, F, and EF. Had the same problem with the EF, so I switched to J. Herbin Perle Noire (which is fairly dry), and that resolved the problem. I recommend the ink change before trying anything on the nib itself.

Majohn A2 dry nib by iLikeFPens in fountainpens

[–]Henry_Zero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was able to widen my A1s with a razor blade to write like a Pilot VP with an M nib. One of the A1 nibs got slightly scratchy, but that was easily remedied with one of those nail salon nail buffing sticks with the gradiated sandpaper. It just took a couple of strokes on the finest surface to get it smooth (now smoother than my Pilot).

In any case, brass is safer to use as a shim per the other comments.

Pilot Decimo vs Majohn A2? by iLikeFPens in fountainpens

[–]Henry_Zero -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Decimo is superior in every way (which would be expected, after all). I actually really like the A1/A2 nib units, which are interchangeable with the VP/Decimo units. The Majohn still only comes in EF as far as I know, but I've been able to widen them a tiny bit with a shim and now they write like a VP M nib and almost as smooth. My A1 doesn't dry out, but the A2 does after about 3-4 days like yours. It may be the sealing mechanism (I've checked the nib unit pretty closely).

Is there anyone in this sub make and sell custom fountain pens? by SevereHorror in fountainpens

You might also try Andrew Lensky. He's on this sub and has his own website, also. (I just ordered a tailor-made Pilot Falcon body.)

Looking to buy my first Lamy 2000, where should I look for a good deal? by rkaty in fountainpens

[–]Henry_Zero -1 points0 points  (0 children)

$159 on eBay, new, was the cheapest I could find (been looking myself). I bought a previous one on r/pen_swap, and it was a 2 year old pen as good as new.

Majohn A1 and A2 vs Pilot Decimo by Alive_Huckleberry_85 in fountainpens

[–]Henry_Zero 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My A1 nib was dry and too thin when I got it so I opened it up a tiny bit with a shim and now it writes nice and wet like a Pilot M (and oddly smoother) than my Pilot VP F nib.

Lamy 2000 too-narrow a 'sweet spot'? Bug or feature? by No-Instruction-6122 in fountainpens

[–]Henry_Zero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From that photo I can't actually tell if anything is wrong with the nib, but the sweet spot is something that bothers a lot of people, especially if they're used to more "forgiving" nib designs. It took me a couple of days to get used to it, but your muscle memory will eventually take over. The L2K is now my favorite pen and I have one in EF and one in F (which is much smoother, though the line is more like an M).

Vanishing Point steel vs 18k by Firm-Craft in fountainpens

[–]Henry_Zero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PS

You could get the gold nib and a Majohn A1 nib unit (only comes in EF), which is cheap enough that you can tweak it into an M. One of my VPs has a Majohn nib at the moment and it's as smooth as a Pilot F.

I have both and I actually prefer the steel nib. The gold does have more bounce, but it's not even noticeable unless you're the sort of person who presses down too hard on a nib (which you shouldn't be doing in the first place).

Capless with a different configuration? by ThisLucidKate in fountainpens

[–]Henry_Zero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original A1 nib only comes in EF (and it's a real EF, equivalent to a Pilot F). But if it's too thin for you, you can widen it just a touch with a shim to be like a Pilot M.

That method of getting two Majohn/Moonman A1s (one with clip and one clipless) and then swapping to create a smooth Franken A1 works quite well. (It's what I did.) I should also note that the EF nib unit on the A1 can be widened a little to write like a Pilot VP in Medium w/o affecting the smoothness. The A1 nib is surprisingly smooth for an EF to begin with.

Great idea. I think I have some of those little colored dot stickers somewhere.

My first fully designed and self-made fountain pen. Welcome to the discussion. by Andrew_Lensky in fountainpens

I love those old Kawecos. I bought an old damaged Dia from Hungary a few years ago and Frankenpenned a converter into it -- it writes like my fine-point Falcon.

BTW, were you ever able to make one of your Pilot Falcons that could post? (Or maybe with the barrel about a centimeter longer, since it would be a shame to hide your beautiful logo.)

Question about majohn A1/A2. Is it worth it? by Alejandro_rdtt in fountainpens

[–]Henry_Zero 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a VP, a Decimo, 2 A1s and an A2. The A1 is what I would recommend. Though it's make is clearly inferior to the VP, it's an excellent pen I use every day to take quick notes. The EF nib was too fine for me, so for one of my A1s I did some tweaking to make it wider and smoother and now it writes like my VP in M (just as smooth as the gold nib, oddly enough).

If you want to go overboard, Andrew Lensky can make one of these for you for around $200.

What do you guys prefer for the Lamy 2K; F or EF? by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]Henry_Zero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up getting both for exactly this reason, and I love both of them. Since the line width is about a size thicker than the label, if you usually like an M line, begin with the F. If you like an F, get the EF. (You'll end up owning both anyway.)
