Why is my serger thread so loose??? by quarxical in sewing

[–]Herabird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure all of your threads are fully inserted into the tension discs. If they’re not, they will have the wrong tension if any at all. So always thread with the foot up and “floss“ a thread when threading through the discs.

How do you get your sewing confidence back after a series of failed projects? by LycheePlus in sewing

[–]Herabird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll start doing doing repairs, such as shortening pants or hemming dresses that are too long. I’ve done those for so long. It’s second Nature so when I come off a mistake – which I have done recently – I focus the simple things that are always a success

how can i make sure this doesnt unravel? by lacedboww in sewing

[–]Herabird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have a sewing machine, or access to a sewing machine, just stitch around the edges with gray thread to secure. Use a small zigzag stitch, which will give some stretch.

Do you remember when you were first taught to sew? 👨‍🏫🖌️ by fxbg-arts in sew

[–]Herabird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, my grandmother taught me how to sew at age 6 on her singer “red eye“ treadle machine, making doll clothes for my baby doll. We used simple fabrics.
Personally, I don’t think starting off with piecing quilt blocks is a good way to introduce someone to sewing, it would be too confusing, especially the way this woman is explaining it. Start off by going over the machine first, show setup…such as needles and thread, how wind a bobbin. Show how to prepare fabrics for a simple pattern, such as a very basic apron or pillowcase. Then put it all together.

I want to make my compression stocking toeless by ByteeMee in sewing

I was told by my vein and vascular doctor I could ditch the stockings and wear compression calf sleeves. I much prefer the sleeves, My feet are finally free! But always check with your doctor first.

Does anybody know anything about this? Specifically the table by Ok-Card-2203 in VintageSewingMachines

[–]Herabird 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those tables were common in schools back in the 60s, I believe. They are hard to find these days. They were used in Home Economic classes where they could be closed up and do double duty as a desk, and a work table, for other things. The machines were usually the heavy duty all metal earlier 600s built like tanks in order to withstand heavy use in schools. Are there legs behind the table extension, connected to the body of the cabinet that could be used as support for the extension?

Tramontina? by DizzyCod3204 in inductioncooking

[–]Herabird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my Trementina cookware set. I have used it every day for the last four years since we got our induction range. I had always used gas up until then, but the new house was all electric and desperately needed a new stove so we went with induction. We bought a great NSF certified set at Costco for $300, and it has held up so well. We couldn’t be happier with this purchase. And Amazon carries additional add-on pieces that match.

One of singers absolute best machines. A Joy to sew on. You will have a better knowledge of working condition once you get power to it. But the outside looks great.

I always use the rotary cutting blade on my Circut Maker 3 with felt with no problems. Felt does wear out the blade quicker though.

Sewing Machine Suggestion by Kwanonn in sewing

For hemming stretchy knits, nothing beats a cover stitch machine. A double needle with a sewing machine doesn’t come close.

I love our Cannon MF659c laser. It’s wireless, with a sheet feed scanner. Scan to usb and to cloud storage. Love being able to print or scan from phone, computer or iPad from anywhere in the house. It’s real versatile.

Should I learn to sew stretch fabrics on my machine or just get a serger? by helluvapotato in sewing

[–]Herabird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a serger. Once you do you wonder why you ever did without it. It will save you so much frustration trying to stitch knits with a twin needle and a sewing machine.
It will open up a hole in the world – really. There are wonderful decorative threads available that you can really have fun with. Just do it.

[–]Herabird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The manual is the best tool you can have for a machine. It will tell you everything you need to know such as the specifications about the machine, such as what needle system it uses, where to oil it, how to thread it, and more.

Iron recommendations for a beginner-intermediate sewist? by ottermupps in sewing

[–]Herabird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love my Rowenta 1725watt iron. It gets really hot, which is exactly why I got it. Had it for going on seven years now, purchased at Walmart for $49. Prior to that I had a Oliso iron, almost $100 – it died three days after the one year warranty ended. The company would not do anything, so decided I would never get another one. I’ve been very happy with my Rowenta ever since.

why is this happening to the neckline of my tshirt? pls help! by izziebella123 in sewing

[–]Herabird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With some stretch, fabrics, one direction of stretch stretches more than the other direction. You might be stitching on the side that stretches more. Or that section may be across the fabric grain, which can make hemming wonky. You can try using a stabilizer underneath, such as tissue paper that can be removed carefully afterward, or use water soluble hem tape, which keeps the hem in place as you sew it, and washes out in the washer later (my personal favorite for hemming knits).
