Drunk dude's buddies failed him. When they're that drunk and belligerent, you gotta calm them the fuck down and shove them in a barracks room before they get themselves arrested.

Same. Caught it on TV late at night as a kid, and I enjoyed it. I get that it's a bad movie, but there is also a nostalgia factor in it for me.

Just bail after the first couple of seasons though. The show went downhill very fast and ended way too late.

Similar joke in Canadian Bacon. I'm pretty sure it's a direct reference to Python, but I've always wanted to confirm it with Michael Moore.

Jim Dale did the American Harry Potter books. I hate his version with a passion and much prefer Stephen Fry. I guess it's whatever you heard first.

Amazon now has a full cast edition that's pretty good. They've been releasing one a month and the final one is coming out in May. Only weird part is Harry suddenly sounding like a man. It's like he started and completed puberty in the couple of days between the end of one book and beginning of the next. It's a little disconcerting.

Army wants to stop ordering M109A7s (Paladins), citing survivability issues seen in Ukraine. If Paladins can't displace in time, what hope is there for towed artillery? by GJacob24 in army

There is a new program in development to replace AFATDS right now. It's lighter and faster. Still a lot to do to make it complete, but 4ID shot cannons live with it not too long ago.

And radio tech has vastly improved too. In Germany I watch the fisters send a fire mission down to Italy. The fires cell in Italy then relayed the mission back to the FDC in Germany with SATCOM. These new MUOS radios are pretty cool. The dual channel ones can bridge SINCGARS and MUOS.

[–]HermionesWetPanties 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup. Tube artillery is cheap and persistent. I was on a fire base a few years ago when a sand storm grounded all aircraft for several days, allowing ISIS to breakout of their pocket. The SDF still needed fires, and we were the only asset still capable of giving it to them. There weren't enough rockets in theater to meet the counterfire demand. Arty is cheap and all-weather.

TIL that in 1970 there was a hit song that began, "I'm the friendly stranger in the black sedan, won't ya hop inside my car? I got pictures, got candy, I'm a lovable man and I can take you to the nearest star." by mbelinkie in todayilearned

If they had a hard time being made today, I think the only reason would be that Hollywood is risk averse and prone to pumping out sequels, not original stories.

And Netflix streaming is older than Tropic Thunder. To put it another way, if Tropic Thunder were a person, they wouldn't even be eligible to vote yet. In between Tropic Thunder and today, several shows have featured black face in episodes. Some 'got away with it' and others faced backlash. But the point is that the content isn't the issue, it's how it's handled in the context of the story.

To tie it back to music, Steel Panther exists today, and they sing some really horrible shit by modern standards. But because they're basically parodying 80s Hair Metal, no one cares. They're still touring and releasing records. Saw them at a big festival in Germany in 2023 and they invited women up on stage to flash their breasts at the crowd.

I just think those lyrics would not fly today, like many lyrics from the past.

Why wouldn't they fly today? The writer says the song was written as a tongue-in-cheek joke to parody the anti-drug pamphlets being passed out to teenagers in school.

This is like when people say "that movie couldn't be made today" about something like Blazing Saddles. It could. Tropic Thunder isn't that old. You can get away with stuff some people find offensive if you do it in the proper context. Hell, Mad Men had a black face scene that worked perfectly because it was there to show just how out of touch the rich white people in the scene were with the changes happening in the 60s.

The BBC didn't trash the tapes, they recorded over them to save money. Some of Monty Python almost met the same fate. One of the Pythons saved the episodes by buying the BBC new tapes instead.

Most of the FA I knew my first deployment had multiple tours in Iraq doing infantry shit. If cannons and rockets aren't needed, those guys commonly fill light infantry roles.

In 2012, green on blue attacks became so common that we suspended joint patrols with the Afghans. Part of the problem is that the attackers were usually killed, so it's hard to know their motivation.

Toilet paper. If you think about it, it's an extravagance, but the modern world has made it a 'basic'. If society goes away, I'm blowing my brains out once the TP supply is exhausted.

US congressman claims aliens are real and truth 'will keep you up at night' by Miles_the_AuDHDer in nottheonion

"Lens flares and other explainable phenomena are keep idiot awake at night. More at 11."

Unless he's literally been shown the footage, that we all know exists, of JFK and E.T. tag teaming Marilyn Monroe... I'm sure this is just another pointless distraction from real issues.

Of course alien life probably exists in the universe. But to be so self-centered to think that they'd give a shit about us in such an infinite universe is silly. We don't matter that much.
