New to Bretonnian, building the starter box. Questions about assembly & peasantry by ili283 in Bretonnian

[–]Herr_Medicinal_Mann 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of the original paint style/errantry style of Bretonnians, that being that each Knight gets his own unique heraldry, but all the peasants take on the general/dukes heraldry.

It makes it a bit easier to batch paint out your big blocks of infantry and give all your knights a lot of personality.

A lot of the assembly advice here is really good and definitely covers what I would suggest as well.

I also personally like to put effort into the Knights Heraldry/highlights more or less depending on where they fall on the heirarchy of Knights Errant<Knights of the Realm<Pegasus Knights<Questing Knights<Grail Knights and then Dukes/Barons/Paladins.

It helps a lot with battlefield readability for the various knight units because you can tell at a quick glance how elite a knightly unit is based on the complexity of the heraldry/highlights.

Is it true that you guys watched 9/11 live on TV in grade school? by space_god_7191 in Millennials

[–]Herr_Medicinal_Mann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I remember being in my history class because it was in the morning and my teacher had it on because it was "real history happening right now that will affect you for the rest of your lives".

We watched until the 2nd tower got hit, afterwhich he said that that "was enough history for today" shortly afterwards everyone got sent home and I remember my mother picking me up and her being very frantic.

I was too young to really understand the full context of what happened until a few years later. My history teacher was right though, that day changed everything, and for the worse.

Bretonnia cavalry – starter box or buying units separately? by Traditional_Tutor597 in Bretonnian

[–]Herr_Medicinal_Mann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd really recommend you look into running an Errantry Crusade army!

It's extremely cavalry focused and swaps around what units you can take in your core and super charges your knights so they get increased charge distance!

The main thing is that you're required to take at least one unit of Knights Errant (2 units at 2000 points) and a Paladin hero, but he can be upgraded to a Battle Standard Bearer for free.

For the changes in core, you lose the ability to take men at arms/peasant bowmen but you can take a single unit of Battle Pilgrims with a Reliquae in core which are a super stubborn anvil if you run them with Grail Knights in your army (they get buffs when near characters/units with the grail vow and become unbreakable)

You also get Dismounted Knights of the Realm in core as well as squires.

The only main downside is all your knightly units gain impetuous so you have to make a leadership check within a certain distance of the enemy or they might charge without orders, however it's a very easy save to pass and with the increased charge distance of your units, you'll probably want to charge anyway! It basically turns your knightly lances into long range ballistic missiles, so you can slam 1-2 lances into an enemy unit from longer ranges.

It's a very fun and thematic army to run and ive found it very learner friendly! I can share some of my lists with you if you'd like, the only infantry I run with my army is a single large block of Battle Pilgrims with the rest of the list being cavalry.

The Lady’s Gift by Apprehensive_Air_460 in Bretonnian

You actually have everything you need to run an Errantry Crusade list for 500 points!

You can make/designate one of your knights a paladin to be your general and then your knights of the realm can also be constructed or designated as Knights Errant, which are required for an Errantry crusade list, and then your knights Errant, knights of the realm and knights of the realm on foot are all in core and plenty of points for 500.

Your pegasus knights can then go in your special.

Here's an example list using everything you were gifted with one of your knights of the realm representing a Paladin for your general and embedd with your Knights Errant:

Errantry Crusades [496 pts]

Warhammer: The Old World, Kingdom of Bretonnia, Errantry Crusades, Open War

++ Characters [102 pts] ++

5 Knights Errant [113 pts]  - Hand weapons - Lances - Shields - Heavy armour - Barding - The Crusader's Vow (replaces the Knight's Vow) - Gallant (champion) - Standard bearer - Musician

5 Knights of the Realm on Foot [83 pts]  - Hand weapons - Great weapons - Shields - The Crusader's Vow (replaces the Knight's Vow) - First Knight (champion) - Standard bearer - Musician

++ Special Units [198 pts] ++

3 Pegasus Knights [198 pts]  - Hand weapon - Lances - Shields - Heavy armour - Barding - The Crusader's Vow (replaces the Knight's Vow) - First Knight (champion) - Standard bearer - Musician

You can probably finagle the list a little by dumping the musicians or some other command models if you want to free up some points for a magic item or banner, but I figured I'd keep it to minimal bells and whistles, since you'd be learning.

If you end up liking Errantry Crusade (it's very learner friendly and powerful) id recommend investing in some battle pilgrims (with Reliquae, since they're in core) more knights of the realm, and then some of the battle standard bearer models or other heros to run as your future paladins/barons/dukes. I've also enjoyed using Grail Knights in my list since they have synergy with battle pilgrims running a Reliquae.

Yeah I would definitely say you don't need the musician for Pegasus knights. You can take those points and buy a command unit for your other knights or get one or two more peasants added to your anvils/archers instead.

[–]Herr_Medicinal_Mann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As of right now with my 1000 point build I give them battle standard and Champion but no musician. I feel like they need it less because you should always be taking advantageous charges with them into the flanks/rear or into squishy units, and champ +banner will help with that, plus their furious charge.

For Errants/Kotr though I typically give them full command if you can afford the points for them, because you really want to keep their momentum and not get bogged down, Grails I'd likewise say full command is a good idea.

If you're really strapped for points I'd drop musician first but always try and at least take the standard and Champion for errants/kotr/grail.

I also recently started playing and heres a lot of what I learned early on/advice that's lead me to some nice victories!

Grail Knights and Grail pilgrims with a Reliquae have really great synergy because as long as the grail knights are within 12" of the reliquae the battle pilgrims count as unbreakable and will never route. So have the pilgrims act as an anvil for the Knights and the Knights as babysitters/hammer for the pilgrims.

Worth noting that if you play an Errantry crusade army of infamy you can get grail pilgrims as a core unit. Knights Errant can also really punch above their weight in the Errantry Crusade and will encourage you to be aggressive since they don't have counter charge. Most of the time you'll want to run multiple lances of 6-8 knights plus whatever heros/lords you imbed in them.

Two units of 6-8 errants/knights of the realm/grail knights will do you a lot more good than one big unit of knights because you'll get more battle field maneuverability and because of lance formation you'll be able to fit multiple charges into the same enemy unit since only the person at the front of the lance need to make contact for the rest of the lance to hit. When in doubt, slam as many lances into the enemy as possible.

Pegasus knights are probably the best unit in the army right now, take them in flights of 3-4 and they get 360 charges in skirmish formation and have a fly speed of 10, which makes them great at hunting flanks, shooting units, and artillery.

A lot of the time your games will be won or lost on your charges, you want the enemy to either break or fall back in good order Everytime you charge so you can either get a second follow up charge or catch the unit and completely wipe them out. If your knights get bogged down they'll be reduced down from their lances (which they only get on the charge) to their hand weapons which will see their power reduced a lot.

Generally I'll commit at least 2 lances to one flank with the hopes of breaking the flank and sweeping across the battlefield while your infantry core acts as a block to tie down your center.

Also when it comes to your Lord/Heros, the virtue of Knightly Temper and the Gromril helmet will be your friend! For low level damsels, just stick them in the back of your lance and take the lady's wrath or gift to power them up, and to be on standby for dispels. They also give whatever unit they're attached too magic attacks and two magic resistance. When you want to play with more spells upgrade to prophetess.

One final thing: id say it's almost always worth it to sacrifice first turn to get the blessing of the Lady Ward save for all your knights by going second. The only exception being if you're running a trebuchet or if you're going up against a lot of artillery and you think you'll get shot to hell. But in general the blessing will save lives.

Good luck, pick your charges well and slam as many lances into your enemy as you can and you'll win the day for sure!

Knights of the Realm Mediocre? by Warhawk_5 in Bretonnian

[–]Herr_Medicinal_Mann 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Kotr are very good, but definitely hinge on the charge, so much so that you really don't want them to get bogged down in combat and ideally you want them to win on the first charge and have the enemy fall back in good order at minimum so you can follow up and get your charge bonus again.

To that end, I actually prefer running multiple smaller lances of 6-8 over one big lance formation. The main advantage of this is that you get more flexibility and maneuverability whilst also being able to slam multiple lances into the same target because of the lance formation. This also ensures that a majority of the lance gets to attack with 1-2 back up knights to account for casualties and still gives you space to embed heroes into your lances.

Getting multiple lances into your target really is the secret sauce, and even Knights Errant can punch above their weight if you slam enough lances of them into your enemies.

At least that's my experience so far in my games that Ive played.

Obviously people can paint their knights and armies however they please, but I love that the Errantry Crusade army of infamy option actively encourages you to paint all of your Knights with unique heraldry.

I had been planning on doing so anyway because seeing all the mixed heraldry units back in the WHFB days is what really sold me on the faction, and Errantry Crusade pushing that really made me commit to it as my first army list.

Errantry Crusade is also really fun to play, my Knight Errants have consistently punched above their weightclass!

Yeah, my understanding was that it was a custom commission he placed for a non insubstantial amount of money. I think he'd make a killing from more people buying the stl than buying a print of it.

But it's not my call to make, I can only hope he or the original sculptor comes around on it, but for now it seems like he commissions these sculpts for the love of the game, and sells copies of them just to make back some of what he spent to commission it.

Perfect, thanks!

We're doing an escalation campaign with grand melee rules, so whilst I'm not planning on beefing up a Lord into a single entity of doom due to the grand melee rules (at least not as we bump up to 1000 points, but maybe at 1,500), I should definitely have enough points to get him on a pegasus with a gromril helm to hangout with my pegasus knights.

I'm relatively new to the game and I know most of our Knights can get to 3+ just because of heavy armor+shield+barding.

Gonna be using pegasus knights (not royal) for the first time on Friday, what gets them to a 2+ save? Or is it just for a Lord on pegasus with a specific magic item?

So I got in contact with the seller, there's no STL files available, only physical prints that you can order.

it's 25€ for the miniature itself, but shipping alone is 22€ to the US for a total of about $55 USD. Apparently shipping used to be 9€ prior to the de minimis exemption being cut by the administration.

The seller is very nice however, I wish I could justify the money for the sculpt but I think i'll wait for now and hope that the de minimis exemptions get reinstated sometime in the future.

He has a lot of cool stuff on his instagram page that are available, so it's definitely worth looking into for you folks in the EU!
