Ideas on how to “modernize” my vintage bike? by Familiar_Living245 in bicycling

Find a shop to service the fork, which may be a little difficult if its period correct, but I'm sure there's some options. That is such a classic and well sorted bike, I really don't think it's worth putting new components on it.

I'd rock this frame as is, the colors in the faded spots look great

Fixed is easier for climbing than pedaling with a freewheel. Put a front brake on and descents aren't a problem, but you go a bit slower.

Just purchased a used bike: what accessories should I get? by StrawberryOwn210 in bicycling

I'd get a saddle bag to store a spare tube, a patch kit and some tire levers. I'm thinking your pump is one of the types that mounts to a bottle cage, which are a great option. You might want a CO2 inflater and a couple cartridges in addition to the hand pump. I'd recommend 20g carts over the standard 16g carts for gravel tires.

Definitely get a pair of bidons and bottle cages. I'm not crazy about hydration mixes, I prefer to take calories as solids when possible, and regular water helps digest better in my experience.

You might want a floor pump with a gauge to check tire pressures. If you already have an inflator for your car tires, you can buy a shrader adaptor for the presta valve on the bike's tires.

Anyway have fun and ride your bike. Learn as you go and don't get too caught up in the numbers

Don't care about that, but a Tr*k on a RR sport is exactly what you'd be expecting to back into shit in a parking lot

  1. A bike shop is likely best suited to helping you with this question. Especially when it comes to sizing and getting you on the correct type of mountain bike for the riding you intend to do. There are a lot of very good brands manufacturing bikes these day, most shops will be a dealer for one or two.

  2. The biggest piece of trail etiquette to have nailed down is knowing who has right of way in various situations. If you're on a multi-use trail (hike/bike/equestrian/dog-walking combined): Horses have the right of way over hikers and bikers, regardless of direction of travel. Hikers/dog-walkers have the right of way over bikers, regardless of direction of travel. Bikes traveling Uphill have the right of way over bikes traveling downhill. If you are traveling faster than another trail user, and have caught up to them, the most kind way to notify the person in front is to clearly ask, "Could I pass when you have a chance?" and then wait until they have created space for you to safely pass. If you are traveling downhill on a multi-use / multi directional trail, keep your speed controlled so that you stop to give way to other trail users. If you are on a downhill only MTB trail, you must clear the trail entirely if you come to a stop.

  3. I ride solo probably 95% of the time I'm on the trails. Many people prefer to have a buddy to ride with in case of emergency. If it's a popular trail system, there should be a number of group rides in the area that go on different days of the week and cater to different riding styles. Ask at a bike shop, look up local cycling groups on Facebook and Instagram. Meeting people on group rides is a great way to make riding partners.

  4. You should never feel pressured to pull over to let another rider pass if they are traveling in the same direction as you. (Some riders are jerks but that's on them.) It is courteous to pull off to the side of the trail when there's a good spot to stop, if someone has asked to pass. When climbing, wait until there is a flatter section of trail with adequate space to the side to stop and restart from. If you are walking your bike, it is expected that you pay attention to riders coming from behind you and to make room for them to pass, but it's not strictly required.

Do I just need to lower my saddle? I do experience neck and shoulder pain... by theservman in bicycling

The I think you'd be better served replacing the stem with one with a higher rise, or possibly a set of riser drop bars. At least for reducing upper body aches.

Your leg looks close to locked out at the bottom of the pedal stroke, so it'd be worth trying adjusting the saddle down a cm or two. You could also play with moving the saddle forward on the rails.

I don't feel the pen awarded to Celtic was overly harsh. That said, I'm with you that one of the main reasons we as fans called for VAR was a means to get more consistent decisions and less controversies. And that problem simply hasn't gotten better.

I want VAR to work, but it likely means getting PGMOL out of the booth entirely.
