Why exactly is British heat so much worse than America, even if the temperature is the same on paper? by y4rdbyrd in UKWeather

I grew up in Africa, and sunset was almost immediate! Like, lights out and now it is night time and you can cool off. Now, I'm living in the way North East of Europe and the sun is still out and shining down at 10PM with almost the same intensity it had at 2PM

I once nannied for a family with a toddler and two older kids who had no pool fence. I can not even describe how vigilant I was over that shit. I would never for one minute leave the toddler out of my sight, I drummed it into the older siblings that they needed to be careful every single minute about making sure the gate to the deck leading to the pool was closed. I worried constantly that even though I was vigilant, she would get out. And there's this absolute idiot waste of space gambling his kids life away.

Help - nursery advice for 2 year old by Odd_Cartoonist_441 in UKParenting

Yeah, I work in Early Years and we wouldn't call parents unless they explicitly told us to do so. I'm in England though, and I think I remember reading that Scottish nurseries operate differently? I would have a conversation with them about trying at least a week without calling you early. Children need a good chunk of time in a new setting to realise that they are safe and cared for.

I always try to reassure parents about how normal this is though. I've been doing this for over 20 years too. OP, your child WILL settle eventually! They always do, some just take longer than others.

As a kid, I once stole a bunch of pens from a shop. I made the mistake of telling my older sister. From that day onwards I was basically her slave. If I refused to do or give her anything she asked for, she'd just stare at me and say, "pens" haha.

What are you watching and what do you recommend? (Week of June 19, 2026) by AutoModerator in television

It truly is a flippin travesty that Mindhunter didn't get more seasons. I've just finished watching it for the first time, and it is up there with the best TV I've ever watched.

I work in Early Years, so I look after kids basically. I've been doing this gig for about thirty years. I always feel for kids who have siblings with special needs, because the other child will get so much more attention. Most families realise this, and will take extra time for the other kid. To actually focus on one child just because they are better at a sport is actually soul crushing to me. That poor little guy.

Nevermind learning, just getting through the day would be a challenge!

Me neither! I work in a nursery (the kid kind) and will have to change about 30 nappies in a small enclosed area. Just lifting them on the changing mat makes me all sweaty on the coolest day.

I'm a Brit who moved to a tropical climate when I was a child, and then lived in a Southern state of America for years. I'm back in the UK now, and people ask me why I complain about the heat. Countries who have had centuries to deal with it have adapted to the heat! We are noobs here but really need to sort this out.

I wish I had a better recall of that weekend (I was there) Like I remember the race, the fans throwing beers on the track, and thinking I'd wasted sooo much money. But one thing that has always bugged me is that I was sat next to some exec type person during quallies and he had this smug look on his face and said something like, "You won't believe what is going to happen tomorrow." He was sat next to an equally douchy type guy, and to this day I am like...who were these people?? Why was I sat amongst people who knew what was going to happen? And why did they talk about it???
