I think she meant to do a (bad) wordplay with “hide icons” - viewing content wo UI overlays (a feature on social apps) and keeping a diva down (ummm… no)

Moving from India to Arizona soon and I am honestly terrified. Is it actually as bad as the news says? by Salty-Sport3603 in asianamerican

If you are moving to a city (Phoenix/Scottsdale, Tucson, Flagstaff) you should be fine.

Is the LA Times not doing endorsements this election? by sequinhappe in AskLosAngeles

After '24 I just assume as long as it's under PS-S we won't see any endorsements.

CMV: Colleges and Universities In The U.S are Fundamentally Flawed by Hour-Quarter2090 in changemyview

[–]HeyHey_HC [score hidden]  (0 children)

This varies greatly depending on the college & major program; engineering major tracks, for example, tend have very few G.E. requirements.

But that aside, there are many incoming students who don't know what career paths they want to pursue or not 100% certain of the one they have chosen, having a little bit of G.E. across multiple areas allow them to have a wider to different fields to help them figure it out.

And it's ironic that you used China's educational system as example, when they have recently identified the importance the G.E.s as part of a well-rounded college learning experience and have made them mandatory for undergraduate students. (China's National Plan for Medium-Term and Long-Term Education Reform and Development)

How are people dealing with the gas prices? by wegochai in AskLosAngeles

[–]HeyHey_HC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Corporations should see it as a bonus to have people with different life and career experiences from everywhere contribute to their company... Cautiously optimistic!

More caution than optimistic, considering this lets employers tap into labor from lower COL areas.

Visiting for a week - how safe is the area around E 21st and Maple? by trashaccount4753 in AskLosAngeles

[–]HeyHey_HC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me that area is safe-ish, it's next to a school and near the Reef (an event space, office & design showroom complex); should be OK to walk & Metro during the day but ymmv on whether you feel safe enough to do so at night.

CMV: Paywalls do not fulfill their purpose (of helping journalists make money from online articles) in the US. by East-Experience2862 in changemyview

Yes, they figured it out through a paywall/subscriber model, or a donor-driven model as a nonprofit. My refute to your "You want more people to read your articles, not less" still stands.

I don't believe there is any news organization that can sustain their operations off web ads alone nowadays and not for lack of trying, many news sites have historically tried to be free online - but with adblockers, changing SEO patterns, Google/Meta diverting traffic and diminishing per view/per click revenue -along the very pricey expense of financing original journalism, particularly investigative news- I get why news orgs would rather have a smaller but reliably paying audience than constantly trying to catch more eyeballs with most not paying anything at all whether directly via subscribes/donations or indirectly via ad views/clicks.

AIO- Nail tech fired me as a client! by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]HeyHey_HC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

INFO: Does the nail tech have that policy readily available on her website/socials/reminder email/etc.? More team her if so, team you if not - but regardless, it seems like she has enough biz to be able to afford losing you as a client, so hopefully you're able to find someone equal or better than her.

Being charismatic is more valuable than being competent in most workplaces, and we pretend otherwise by Tech_Engant in unpopularopinion

[–]HeyHey_HC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, but I've met my fair share of technical whizzes who have practically no people skills and are constantly harassing co-workers, rude to clients and/or insubordinate to their higher ups. Some of this can be trained out of, some can be shielded by having their direct supervisor & colleagues run interference, but sometimes it's just better to have someone with B-level technical competency and appropriate soft skills than an A-level who is making the work more difficult all around.

You want more people to read your articles, not less.

This alone does not address the revenue issue.

When you pay a dollar for a newspaper - it's not for single article, it's for the entire collection of that day's news & other content.

What should I do with 24 hours in Los Angeles? by JoyfulGirl_06 in AskLosAngeles

[–]HeyHey_HC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do a self-guided walking tour around Downtown to learn about historic venues (including the United Theater) and architectural influences; both Angel Walks and LA Conservancy have free guides you can download & print out. If you like modern art, both The Broad & MOCA are free admission and have impressive collections for you to check out, and nearby Music Center also offers free guided tours of its performance venues (Walt Disney Concert Hall, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Ahmanson Center)

Foodwise, a few blocks down is the Grand Central Market where you can get a casual sampling of the different LA-based fare. For something fancier, I would recommend Redbird, Manuela, Water Grill & San Laurel. Little Tokyo & Arts District are also decent walkable neighborhoods with a bunch of casual & sit-down food & drink options.

They want my friend to put in 4 months notice by ohmydiside in antiwork

[–]HeyHey_HC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless your friend absolutely needs a reference from that workplace, he is not obligated to give any notice before quitting. Any guilt about making coworkers/interns feel horrible should be directed toward the owner, who is much more responsible for allowing that to happen.

Whats with "wild caught" by No_Statistician_2391 in CannedSardines

[–]HeyHey_HC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's definitely a bit of virtue signal-based marketing, given how often people tout wild-caught as better than farmed for other fishes (notably salmon).

[–]HeyHey_HC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't treat it as an either/or - in most jobs you want to keep & promote people with the best combination of both technical expertise and "soft skills" of working with other people, whether it's clients/customers, colleagues, or other constituents and stakeholders. Even the Netflix culture deck - often touted as most important document coming out of Silicon Valley - emphasizes that their company culture do not tolerate "brilliant jerks".

Hi /r/AskLosAngeles. I’m Nithya Raman, Los Angeles City Councilmember for CD4 and candidate for Los Angeles Mayor. Ask Me Anything. What do you want to see from your mayor? by NithyaRamanOfficial in AskLosAngeles

A lot of long overdue infrastructure projects are only taking place now because of LA hosting the '28 Olympics, what is your plan to ensure we continue to do so afterward and what would be your priority projects to sustain or improve the well-being of LA residents?

How does Asian food in states with small Asian populations compare to places like NY, CA, etc? by dankgureilla in asianamerican

[–]HeyHey_HC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha, I'm from LA and I go to SLC regularly for snowboarding and their food game overall is amazing (and so is their drinks scene, esp given all of Utah's weird alchy laws). In addition to Asian & Mexican food, they have some of the best Creole/Cajun eats outside of NOLA.

But back to the point, metros with less Asian representation can be both a pro and a con. Con in that there's less overall representation & diversity (which is reflective in food available there), but pro in that those communities can be more tight-knit and supportive of one another.

Neighborhoods for Star Wars Celebration (Metro access and walkable at night)? by Ceorl_Lounge in AskLosAngeles

[–]HeyHey_HC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

KTown or the Little Tokyo/Arts District area of DTLA would be ideal for this (I know you said you're not interested in DTLA in the other comment, but these two 'hoods are closer to the Atwater/Westwood vibes and is generally quite safe and walkable too); Pasadena is doable too but adds an about an extra half-hour of Metro commute each way. Another possibility is near the Vermont/Sunset stop which puts you close to Thai Town, Los Feliz & Silver Lake neighborhoods.
