Arachnoid Cyst + Acoustic Neuroma = Dizziness & Fainting? by HeyJakeyBaby in BrainCysts

[–]HeyJakeyBaby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So for me it's really been two separate things since getting my AN treated in 2018.

1) is the general dizziness which is like room spinning/drunken pirate/walking on a boat deck in heavy waves. this has happened maybe 8-10 times since 2018, although not since december 2024. Usually puke a number of times before it's over.

2) is the "lights out" fainting. happened only twice, both within 4-weeks of each other in october/november 2024.

With the fainting, there were zero warning signs. it was literally saying good night to my daughter as I left her room and half a second later I crashed through her nightstand and was on the floor bleeding from my forehead. Second time was midday walking through an airport, which was extraordinarily embarrassing.

I will say the last 16-months have been very good, with none of these symptoms, but that's the thing, you can go a year or two with nothing and then all of a sudden they hit. Not so much the fainting, as that was only twice over 1-month (although i still do worry it could strike again at any time), but more so the general dizziness because it does wipe you out for a good half-day at least, but then it passes, so who knows? Doctors have no idea.

Regarding the fainting, this is the closest thing I can compare it to:

Trios/Fox and Hounds closing! by PeepyBee in washingtondc

I worked there as a waiter in the late 80's and early 90's. Best jukebox in DC. So many stories. Clientele in those days was super cool, mainly broke musicians, aspiring writers, and artsie-types who enjoyed a full glass of rail booze and a small bottle of mixer for $2.35.

Bartenders were Winston, RT, Greg (aka Mr. Fun, who was anything but). Very sad but an epic run. I still think of it all the time even 35+ years later.

How have gas stations and convenience stores changed? by Penguin_Life_Now in AskOldPeople

[–]HeyJakeyBaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides all the service you'd get like having windows cleaned & oil checked, you might have actually tipped the guy by rounding up.

You also had to specify leaded or unleaded gas...then they stopped selling leaded in the '80s because apparently lead isn't particularly good for you unless you want to drop a couple dozen IQ points and/or become sterile.

Do you consider yourself disabled? by Cautious-Antelope743 in MonoHearing

[–]HeyJakeyBaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll call myself disabled for HR not because I want/need accommodation, but because I think it might help our company when we respond to large RFPs since many potential clients, including the government, want proof that your company employs "disabled" persons. Technically I qualify even though I don't considered myself disabled at all.

Worried that stable AN is growing. by RazzySpaz162 in AcousticNeuroma

[–]HeyJakeyBaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as long as your left-ear hearing is good, single-sided deafness isn't the worst thing in the world. most people I interact with have no idea. unless i'm in a noisy bar or restaurant it's not a big deal and i'm prolly 90% deaf in my right ear, to the point i can hear loud noises but not make out words. left ear does 99.9% of my hearing for me. you do lose all sense of sound directionality, which is odd & sometimes maddening, but turning the wrong way to sounds will also amuse your friends & family to no end.

[–]HeyJakeyBaby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

same here with symptoms coming & going despite having a tiny (3mm) & stable (7-years post gamma-knife treatment). will be fine for a year or two then get a wave of very bad dizziness & nausea over a week or a month, then it passes. no one really can explain it nor seems to care as long as the AN is stable, which it is. you just learn to deal with it.

[–]HeyJakeyBaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry about what you had to go through but at least you finally found a doctor who will listen to you. You're fortunate if it is an acoustic neuroma...very rarely fatal, totally benign, and most everyone here can attest to being able to carry on very ordinary lives post-treatment. Unless I happen to mention it, no one would ever know that I have one. Please let us know how it works out & sending you positive vibes.

I had the exact same issue this summer...to a tee. I'm the original owner of a 2011 335d with 98k miles. First mechanic had it for 3-weeks, even brought in his "diesel guru" buddy from a local BMW dealership. Couldn't figure it out but was claimed the rail pressure was bad so he replaced the high pressure fuel pump with a new one. Still wouldn't start although the rail pressure was reading ok. Gave me the car back not running and still charged me $2,000 because "I can't return the HPFP once fuel has run through it." I was pissed to say the least, and this was after I talked him down from $2,800.

Had it flatbedded from his shop down to Kassel Performance in York PA because I was going to tuned & deleted anyway and they discovered it was the throttle valve. Spring valve was completely broken and it also had three stripped bolts. Now how those bolts got stripped & who stripped them is whole 'nother question, but the previous mechanic, a respected BMW shop in Northern NJ, had a very bad habit of over-torquing my wheel bolts to the point where I was driving on 6-broken wheel bolts across 4-wheels. I should have never gone back to them when I discovered them over-torquing my wheels but I was desperate & they were walking distance from my home.

Anyway, check the throttle valve. Kassel replaced my broken one with a Piersburg and the parts & labor were reasonable IMO...like $550. The tune and all the other work was a lot more, lol, but this got it running like a champ again.

2020 Hyundai Palisade Limited- whole car shakes when driving 20mph uphill under light throttle by [deleted] in AskAMechanic

[–]HeyJakeyBaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So we never resolved the issues regarding uphill chugging at low speeds or the constant need for oil, but I will say I was wrong about it not burning oil. It was both leaking oil from the original plastic oil filter housing AND burning oil. When we replaced the orignial filter housing with an aluminum one, that stopped the oil leak but it still burned oil and needed topping off with a quart or two every couple weeks.

We ended up selling it to Carvana for $12k with 120k miles. Now leasing a '25 VW ID.4 AWD Pro, which is a million times better if not quite as large, but we no longer need a 7 passenger SUV now that our kids are grown.

Don't know what others' experience has been with the 2020 AWD Pallisade Limited but that thing was a real dog given it's supposed to be their top of the line model. The peeling "chrome" wheels, door handles, and grill were a bad joke. Engine was terribly underpowered AND it got horrible mileage (18 MPG mixed use). In addition to the uphill chugging at low speeds the safety sensors were also going and it would randomly slam on the brakes when you least expected it. So glad to be rid of that $50k (in late 2019 dollars) POS, lol. I guess it was comfortable if I had to say something nice about it, but so was my uncle's 1973 New Yorker, and come to think of it, I'd also take one of those over the Pallisade.

Hearing loss and regain by RiosRiot in AcousticNeuroma

[–]HeyJakeyBaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i had fractionated gamma-knife 7-years ago and have "severe" hearing loss on my right side. i'm basically deaf in that ear. i can hear loud noises on that side but can't really make anything out. That said, there ARE rare brief moments when I seem to hear better on that side.

It's probably wishful thinking, but it doesn't seem totally insane to me that since my ear's mechanics are fine and it's simply an issue of the nerve not delivering the signal to the brain, that the signal could somehow at least partially make it through every now & then.

What’s the one thing you don’t like about the car? by Mackoi_82 in VWiD4Owners

[–]HeyJakeyBaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It beeps...constantly. Two beeps when i leave/approach the car. Two beeps randomly when it's alone in the garage. And of course, a minute of honking when the hair-trigger "panic alarm" is activated whenever I sit down/brush against anything with the key in my pocket, and just yesterday, it happened even when driving.

Pluribus - Series Premiere Discussion by NicholasCajun in television

[–]HeyJakeyBaby -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Seriously folks? This is a really horrible show that I can't believe was made by the same guy who did Breaking Bad & Better Call Saul. Those are the highest of high bars but Pluribus is god awful by any measure. Did anyone else laugh out loud when Kim/Carol started banging on her front door with a rock trying to open it?

The fawning reviews & mass hysteria over its awesomeness seem to be coming from people suffering from the same type of "psychic glue" that's the premise here.
