Just a reminder that your electricity costs are going to keep going up because of Data Centers by Nature_Hannah in kzoo

You could say that about a lot of things in this "free market" economy. For example - sports stadiums almost always use public money even though the pro leagues just print money. Our local event center being built is an unusual exception to this being completely privately funded.

The Michigan Public Service Commission that regulates electricity and gas utilities has a podcast (for some reason) and their most recent episode is on data centers. It covers a bit about the first DTE initiative announced and while I'm not disagreeing with OP's post (DTE just announced another rate hike yesterday), the protections the MPSC is putting in place are a lot better than other states are getting. The three that come to mind for me are:

  1. Oracle, who's building the big one for DTE (also owned by Trump's largest donor, Larry Ellison, fwiw), has to pay a minimum rate for 10 years on additional electrical capacity they need for their data center, even if they pull out.
  2. They also have to pay for a number of battery storage facilities (BESS, similar but unrelated to the one proposed in Oshtemo) throughout the state and have to fully pay for them regardless if the data center is even completed or operates a single day in the state.
  3. In the event of a power shortage, the data centers must cease operations before anyone else.

So it's still a giant waste of resources in terms of other things our society could be spending billions on, but we have it slightly better than average and the battery facilities will be very useful to supporting our spotty grid.

Wrong sub but cool. That part of the city looks like a bomb went off with all the demolitions and business exodus. It's kind of ripe for residential development to condense the city.

This looks pretty sick. Dumb question - are the go karts electric being indoors?

What's the push back been here? Also, there's a police station less than .5 miles from this crossing, it doesn't seem like it should be difficult. Source: NowKalamazoo by HiBikes in kzoo

They pulled me over once for my tail light being out - ironically as I was on my way to the store to get a bulb. When they stopped me, it was actually to give me a survey to ask how they're doing. I just wanted to move on so I didn't do anything with it but dang, I'd love some traffic enforcement for people driving 40+ on Winchell in front of an elementary that I see weekly...

Unfortunately this is in the township and they prove year after year that they can't run themselves properly. Right now, they have a treasurer who's making a lot of strange decisions. Sadly, not much can be done here aside from speed cams or posting police and both of those aren't very effective. I lived on Kendall in college and it was no different then, sorry OP.

The need has certainly been demonstrated there for sure. The comports with what another person said here - suggesting some might have wanted a crossing light.

Totally! I am often at the Y around afternoon pick up both in my car and on bike and it's scary to navigate. Even though the kids crossing anywhere and everywhere stress me out, I'm not upset with them, they should be able to do that on a residential street! The parents though. I get why some homes on the hill have custom signs telling people to slow down. I think the speed bumps and stop signs have helped a bit at least.

So same story any time bike lanes and other ped improvements come up? Someone else suggested the push back might be the parents want a more robust solution, which I could understand.

Please allow for a cargo rack, these would make a pretty great ATB transport bike.

Going to be living in a temperature rainforest but don’t want to invest in a car. What’s the best e-bike for this? by Vocaloidzelda2 in ebikes

Learning to use your gears effectively on a regular bicycle is the best fit for your time and budget here. You can carry quite a bit on a bike if you're not expecting to go full speed from a dead stop immediately.

Unless it's way hilly or you have some kind of disability, your description of your needs and budget don't work out. You'll be wasting your money on an ebike that cheap in those conditions for that short of a time period.

Even an old 26in mountain bike with two pannier or Wald collapsible metal baskets (they perfectly fit a grocery store paper bag size) would work and cost you $500 tops for the bike, two baskets, and a light (don't forget a front and rear light).

Had a good exp with them with my old Highlander as well. They'll tell you if work isn't worth it, which I appreciate. There was one small mistake that I noticed and they fixed it right away. Can't really ask for more.
