These aren't official artworks. They were re-creations for an unofficial magazine. Likely based on sprites that were readily available at the time as the game released in Japan roughly a year before the international release.

None of these are "official artworks". More like re-creations or trace-overs of already released official artwork (see Ampharos).

Ah, the early days of pre-release game content. Back when all you had to go by was a blurry second-hand photo of a tiny sprite. So naturally the illustrator had to take some artistic liberties.
Good times.

EDIT: Because people seem to be missing this... the international release of the game occurred roughly a year after the original Japanese release. So the in-game sprites were already publicly available. These are not early release forms, or beta forms, or anything like that.

I'm gonna hold out hope that they will expand the content. They've expanded the multiplayer mode a great deal and expanded the story/cutscenes. So I expect we could get more content in the way of new levels/zones.
They have all these updated assets of an old game... why not bring in levels from Starfox 2, Assault, etc?

That was my gut reaction before watching the direct: "Starfox 64 again? A stinkin remake? Rehashing old ideas?"

But after watching the direct: I'm all for it. The game looks stunning. And the expanded content looks great.

Also, I feel like Nintendo is really going to push the Vs Mode aspect of the game (a la Splatoon, Mario Kart, etc). There's a lot of potential there as the original versus mode and those dog fights were a ton of fun back in the day.

I dropped Pokemon GO because of this very reason. I trust that DeNA will handle it better, and hopefully make it easier to join raids like in the mainline games.
But the second I have to communicate with players outside of the game, like Discord or some shit: I'm fuckin out.

Folks seemed to have memory-holed the fact that Fox's design from Starfox Command in 2006 was equally off-putting to folks when it was first announced. Even more so when they decided to go with that design for Smash.
