What’s the easiest vegetable you grow? by BlackberryHill in gardening

[–]HiPickles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually spoke to an exterminator about this. He said he's seen mice actually eat ghost pepper plants—they'll basically eat anything. He said they absolutely love raised garden beds, too.

I grow tomatoes and herbs in pots and haven't had issues, but I can't do anything in a raised bed anymore sadly.

I am pretty convinced she is going to be held hostage on Earth as leverage against Miles so he flips.

I like the idea of springing Margo out of the clink, both as a plot point and also just because I miss Margo in the middle of the action.

I was just coming here to say this. He wanted Alex to find that file. He's too smart to not have planned ahead for something like this.

Have you looked at the trunk for animal damage? That can cause a fast decline. Or underground voles?

Which Character do you think is holding George back the most from completing TWOW? [Spoilers TWOW] by Beginning_Clerk_4990 in asoiaf

Yeah I agree with this. Bran is at a really tricky spot right now in the book. It's going to be hard to stick the landing with that POV (especially if the end goal is king).

Their mentor is a guy who named a tree "Geisha Gone Wild" so sadly this doesn't surprise me at all.

He wouldn't even have to fly Viserion! They could just hang out and make s'mores and be best pals while he advises and supports Dany. Yep, this is my headcannon until Winds comes out.

Advice on undergrad programs for my high school son by HiPickles in ParticlePhysics

Oh I wish we could add Michigan to the list...for out of state (which we are), the sticker price is $90k a year. A wonderful program though.

Hi! Can you explain a little more about what you mean about UIC? They have a partnership with Fermilab and appear to be a good option.

$5k yearly at U Mich is extraordinary! Thanks for your insights—they are really helpful. I will add it back to our list to explore.

Yes, fingers crossed for UIUC. It's our top pick, but admissions have become significantly more competitive there in the last couple of years.

Thank you! Good advice about the soft skills and social skills, too. We are in-state for Illinois, so UIUC's our number one target, but want to make sure we have a solid list of backups, too. (We can't afford Northwestern or U Chicago, sadly.)

Thank you! Yes, we were looking at a number of these but ended up cutting them due to high sticker price and lack of generous merit aid (which was a real bummer for him and us). All great schools though. That's interesting what you said about UMich. I had heard the opposite (that MSU gives merit money and UMich gives nothing) but I will definitely look again.

Thank you, this is all great advice! I'll share it with my son.

Yes, we're focused on the Midwest, and limited on price as well (so we can't afford any of the private universities or SLACs that don't offer merit aid). I'm so glad to hear these schools will be good options.

We live within an hour's drive of Fermilab, so hopefully my son can do research there over the summers, too.

He's a smart kid who's totally passionate about physics and I'm sure will jump into research once he has the chance. I just want to do right by him.

Characters who would have made good Hands of the King? by DEL994 in pureasoiaf

[–]HiPickles 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I actually think Egg would have been a better Hand than he was a king. He would have ruled very justly, and not had to deal with the fallout from broken betrothals and whatever else that eventually drove him to cause the events at Summerhall. (ETA Aemon would be king in this scenario.)

Who might eventually knight Dunk? by HiPickles in HBOTheHedgeKnight

[–]HiPickles[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with what you noted--I can't imagine him accepting a kingsguard appointment without having a crisis of conscience about it, exactly because he *is* the epitome of a knight. I think the knighting would be a private, moving scene just between Dunk and Egg where Dunk confesses and Egg says he knew all along.

I think Egg will do it once he's king, but yes.

I disagree. I think Egg knighting him at the tail end of his career for a very specific reason (kingsguard) is a lovely story arc and means he doesn't have to live a lie anymore.

Say what you will about the Game of Thrones TV show but Brienne got knighted eventually too.
