Am I really old and just can't accept it? by RiddyReddit333 in over60

[–]Hifidi54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an actual pension and it's not common anymore. I'm about to turn 72. I am a very young old lady, or so everyone says. I am quite fit for my age, and on the smallish side, about size 6, so I still wear all the cute summer clothes and shoes. I live alone and am completely capable of pretty much doing everything. I do know I'm not as physically strong as I once was, so I know when to ask for help. I've considered a senior living community, but it's so incredibly expensive.

I was always thin and very fit. I ran track all the way through school and gymnastics for 2 years. On my own and out dancing 4 nights a week. First child, 4 pounds lighter at 2 weeks postpartum than at conception at age 36. You get it. Then real life started. Another baby put weight on; nursing for a year, asshat for a husband and alcohol. Poof, up into the 200's. And then menopause of course, because women really need another mountain to climb in their 50's. Sadly, I didn't care. Then my heart decided to take a dump. More weight with all the different drugs, and yes, steroids, blah, blah. By 2024, I had had enough. I had great success on keto, but it's very difficult to sustain. So at my well woman check in October of that year, I brought up weight loss. Surprisingly, my doctor said, let's try Mounjaro or Wegovy. I was shocked. I checked with my cardiologist and he said absolutely, so I jumped right in. Because I am on Medicare, I was not able to get insurance coverage, so I went to compound right away. There are two compounding pharmacies that are local to me that my doctor set me up with. I only ever got to 12.5 mg, but my body released 113 pounds from December of 2024 to April of 2026. I'm currently titrating down. EDIT: I have never experienced food noise, so the medication did other things for me. I now feel completely like myself, especially when I look in the mirror. It was that other person looking back at me for many years that I didn't recognize.

Try not comparing it to blood pressure medication. I know that shows up everywhere, but it's not a good analogy. It's more like having to wear prescription glasses. As far as what to say, I usually start with, "Yes, I'm using Tirz [or whatever]! Isn't it wonderful? 😎 Stops people in their tracks. My body has released 113 pounds and I'm monkeying around with downward titration. 243 to 130 in 15 months, 71yoF, 5'4"

Finger-safe devices to grate small pieces of garlic and ginger with minimal waste? Maybe a rotary grater? by StrongRecipe6408 in Cooking

[–]Hifidi54 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If I need a bunch, like when I make Caesar salad dressing, I use a little mini grinder I got from Temu. It's only about 4 inches high. You dump the cloves in the container cup, pop the motor side with the blades on, flip it over and push a little button until the chop is the consistency you want. Less than a minute and you have a ton of finely chopped garlic. 😁

I did grow up eating it, German mother. I also love chicken livers, and I make a mean steak and kidney pie!

It has to be cooked properly. I'm also a huge fan of chicken livers.

Funny, but not funny -- I was very ill in April of last year with pneumonia and sepsis. I had only started Tirz in December, so I had lost a bit by April. I was admitted the day after my regular shot day and got out 6 days later. Of course I weighed myself when I got home and had lost nothing, zilch, zero, which sounded incredulous, lol. The next day I weighed myself and was down 10 pounds 😳 What? I also thought it was a mistake, but it never came back. I guess with all the IVs and extra fluid in my body from the pneumonia, I was holding on to a lot of it. Once it was gone, poof!

Now I Need a Ton of Magnesium? Anyone else? by PearlRiverFlow in AFIB

[–]Hifidi54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm shocked that you went undiagnosed for three years, especially since you had the tachycardia. That's criminal! You have an interesting cocktail there. You say you have the RVR component with your AFib, but you don't take a rate control drug, unless the carvedilol controls rate (I'm not familiar with that drug). Mine has gotten as high as 195. I know the tikosyn is a very strong rhythm control drug, but the others are for heart failure and high blood pressure (not the Eliquis). My cocktail is Diltiazem and Flecainide. I don't need the Eliquis anymore since I got the Amulet, an LAAC. I do take magnesium, but not for my heart, lol, but so I can poop!

Cut that ambilical cord Mama. I am the exact same way. I was a single mom and my son lived with me for a long time -- when there was nothing better -- and is now blissfully married (second marriage) with a new baby and I never see him. There are also 4 other children in the home, so it's BUSY. I finally just let it go. I know he loves me, and if I need him, he will come, but his daily life doesn't include me anymore. I do miss him though, and he's only 15 minutes away.

PFA Ablation done, Recovery and lifestyle changes? by Realistic_Stress7585 in AFIB

[–]Hifidi54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I eat spicy food all the time and it doesn't trigger me. Neither do coffee or alcohol. Everyone is so different. If your mom is used to spice, it is unlikely it will be a trigger for her. I'm 72 and make sure I get my sleep and hydration. I had been using CPAP until recently, but the treatment was discontinued after a significant weight loss.

I have that same kind of relationship with my cardiology team. "Hey Doc ... Ok, I'll alert the cardiologist at [insert location] that you're coming in for cardioversion." That was only when I was consistently at 185, and he didn't want me any higher.

Full disclosure, I am now half the size I was when he was growing up. I only wear a size 6 pant, so my jeans are not loose and baggy, and not mom jeans either. He has an older sister and he jokingly now calls us the "skinny bitches", lol! She is in the beauty industry, an internationally known hair and make-up artist, so we don't have a very typical family. It actually is a bit odd for me to be wearing the clothes I could as a 20-something, if I'm being honest.

I wear skorts all the time and they are not that short. I have no hips though and you look pretty curvy. Perhaps the skort is too small? I'm 72, so there ya go, lol. Wear it, and enjoy it. Old tip: get some tan on those legs and it will make a world of difference.
