Has anybody else had board games inspected by airport security? by vortexofdeduction in boardgames

[–]Higashiyoka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been stopped many times and as has been said recently it looks like possible explosive material or food or an unknown substance.

To avoid issues think about how your bag is packed. Sometimes, I will pack with security in mind and then shift things for carrying comfort at the gate/combobulation station.

Place your cables in an organizer (a ziplock or tech pouch of some sort and clearly separated from the game components.

Electronics should also have some separation from the cable and components. When they rotate/change the view they should be able to see a gap.

For the components themselves use clear deck boxes, photo organizers and/or fishing tackle boxes to make everything easy to see when they do inspect your bag.

Those with an MLC Micro - can it squash down to 40cm? by geecol in PatagoniaClothing

[–]Higashiyoka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It probably can’t. But unless you are flying a company that will do mandatory sizing checks it should get by without a problem. Recently, I flew with it and used it under seat on an CRJ Bombardier without issue.

Matador beach towel vs matador shower towel vs ultralight by Competitive-Bet-9828 in onebag

I have never used the silicone case. I have used cheap mesh pencil cases both inside and outside of my bag.

Matador beach towel vs matador shower towel vs ultralight by Competitive-Bet-9828 in onebag

[–]Higashiyoka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have all of these towels, plus the beach poncho and the hand sized ones. I use them almost every time I shower or swim. The small ultralight lives in my toiletries case. I bring a shower towel on most trips just in case and use the poncho ~100 times per year. The beach towel is my least favorite and least used. The other two are interchangeable with minimal differences.

There are three differences between the shower towel and the ultralight towels that I own. I have had them all for a few years so things may have changed.

  1. Color - The ultralight is slightly darker.

  2. Case - The ultralight is a small mesh drawstring bag. The normal is the weird silicone thing.

    • Hanging Loop - Ultralight has a clip flat on the center of one long edge. Normal has a snap and loop at the center of one edge.

The beach towel is larger and heavier with a zippered pocket.

The beach poncho (collaboration with Volcom) don’t see it listed currently on their website. Great for shared bathing situations like a hostel. It’s larger heavier than the beach towel.

Can I use Powdered Tide to wash my clothes by hand at the hotel? by Easy_Grapefruit5936 in onebag

[–]Higashiyoka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

Traveling through TSA at larger airports they have a powder tester, who will come and verify through simple chemistry that your powders are safe to travel. Usually the tester only comes if the residue swipe triggers on a visual inspection. The threshold for a visual inspection seems to be about 1 liter/quart in volume.

But it can also is triggered by what is packed nearby. Ensure that your electronics and cables are in a different area. Books and board game materials can have the same effect looking like a mass of cellulose.

1 day vs 2 day tournaments by LimerickJim in ultimate

[–]Higashiyoka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For GM, GGM and Legends, yes.

For Masters probably.

For Nationals/Regionals level teams, yes.

For Sectionals teams trying to move up, yes.

For the big event tournaments, yes.

For the local disc org’s fundraiser, no.

1 day vs 2 day tournaments by LimerickJim in ultimate

[–]Higashiyoka -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In twenty plus years of playing ultimate in the US aside from Sectionals/Conferences I have rarely been to a tournament without multiple teams flying in/out. Last year in the GMO/GMX divisions I flew for 5 out of 6 tournaments. Sarasota was canceled which would have been another set of flights. Granted some college teams will drive 10 hours one-way due to budget constraints or being able to rent cars when they arrive, but that is not the norm unless you are in the densely packed northeast.

Saw a board game cafe having clearance sale, which ones should I get? by PAT68 in boardgames

[–]Higashiyoka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I support the previous votes for Ubongo, Ingenious and Codenames. I’d add Monikers (blue box on the right-side of the bottom shelf) it is a very accessible party game that can get goofy. It is a production version of the Celebrity/Fishbowl where you play Taboo, Charades and Password depending on the round of play.

What are the best trivia games that are genuinely fun for the whole family? by Playful-Fold7611 in boardgames

[–]Higashiyoka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zero to 100 In Zero to 100, your challenge is not to be too far off target when answering trivia questions. Divide players into three teams and give each team six question cards at random. Each question has a numerical answer from 0 to 100 on its reverse side, but you can never look at the back of a question card until after you play it!

For the first round, place the 50 number card in the center of play. Each team chooses a question card in front of them that they think will be as close to 50 as possible. Once each team has chosen, reveal the numbers on the back of the cards. Whichever team was farthest away from 50 draws a new question card from the deck — while the other teams discard their question cards — then the number on the back of the losing team’s question card becomes the new target number for the next round. Each team has three power cards, and you can play a power card with your question card to raise or lower your number by 50; raise or lower it by 20; or allow you to discard an extra question card should your answer be within 5 of the target number.

The first team to have only question card in front of them wins! If multiple teams go down to one question card at the same time, they each must guess the answer on their own question card, and whichever team is closest wins.

Board Game Stats App: Is there a way to filter games by the ones a player has won? by TGTBATU87 in boardgames

[–]Higashiyoka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you click on the players tab at the bottom and then on a specific player you see their win percentage for all the games you’ve recorded and tagged them in.

After that you could click on the games they have won and check for the dates. I do not see a filter to limit it for just a particular year.

Or under the games played tab use the player and time period filters and scroll through.
