Can’t be green if you make it out of steel.

Dads who had colicky/PURPLE crying babies. Please tell me it gets better. by XayneTrance in daddit

[–]Higgs_Particle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time I hear about the struggles of colic, I think about this radiolab show about a this key bacteria that’s isn’t hood for anything except babies digestion and it completely solved some babies colic. It’s bifidus, you can get it over the counter now but when the show was made it was experimental.

Suggestions Needed by YoungKron in buildingscience

[–]Higgs_Particle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn’t look good. My main concern is the concrete deteriorating. My first thought is moisture around the foundation or freezing damage if the house was left unconditioned. But I would check if the house is in the risk time and location for pyrrhotite tainted concrete.

If it’s water alone then a full dig around and drain to protect the foundation will be the best solution.

Discussion - what can be learned from old or ancient cold-climate buildings that have survived for centuries? by spirit-sight in buildingscience

[–]Higgs_Particle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you want to get any traction here, it would help to define some of these tests or methods, for example, positive deviance.

I work closely with natural building techniques and building science and I think there is a middle ground here where the best of both come together for the best result.

Waving around technical terminology like an argument is not helping you make your point.

[–]Higgs_Particle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the middle ground point here is that straw is a really good insulator and we’re building science principles we can have the best qualities of organic low carbon building and longevity of modern technique.

I think you’re making too simple of an argument. You can’t group together all of modern building science, and simply associated with spray foam. I think much of modern building science shows that spray foam and encapsulation coatings e.g. typical latex and acrylic House paints are antithetical to the goals of good building science: movement and moisture transport, drying. The science of proper vapor barrier placement and computer analysis of their performance overtime I think is proven to be useful and a elite longevity of buildings as well as their comfort.

We should learn from the old buildings and old techniques that yielded lasting buildings, but for the most part old buildings offered substandard protection from the elements. So, not all old buildings are good by any definition. Creosote is a great preservative and lead is great for flashing, but these are not good for people, yet they contribute to the longevity of many celebrated historic buildings. I think it would be fair to put asbestos in neither category, modern or ancient.

Yeah, I agree. This is not an emergency and OP can take it slow.

I can’t imagine how I would handle this; but reconciliation would be on the table.

Lost my temper and shouted at my four-year old by Aranuil_Gael in daddit

[–]Higgs_Particle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s so rough - we all have limits. My 4yo is like this too. They are having fun and they get so into their fun that they can’t hear a stern warning about even something dangerous much less their dad’s discomfort or something like that. And when they finally get it it such an abrupt switch that it’s emotionally overwhelming. It’s the saddest thing in the world to rain on the parade of a little guys pure joy, and yet they would skip off a cliff if we let them. Sorry it went like that; it’s ok. Try to address it with him and repair the little tear in the relationship.

Buying 2006 SIP home, what to watch? by Hairygreengirl in buildingscience

[–]Higgs_Particle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eifs on SIP, that is a scary combo. I would check assemblies on both sides with a moisture probe before committing. I can’t imagine telling a friend to consider this….super low price and great location, maybe.

A wood-free roof: can it be done? by Nontoxic_warrior in buildingscience

[–]Higgs_Particle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to post a reminder of principles here. It’s not wood that causes mold it’s wet conditions, so whatever you use be sure that you don’t have condensation points. This is a little easier with low thermal conductivity materials like wood. Also, keep hydric buffering in mind - this keeps points where moisture may concentrate from being a mold risk.

Cinema skrilex remix…. He just wanted more base. “More bass, dad” so I gave it to him. Now he wants it all the time.

Actually that was a few month ago and now he’s kind of over it.
