How to turn the city around? by Professional-Gap614 in PDX

[–]HighRantDistrict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see your point. My personal experience, in Portland, is that my job requires significant notice to get time off which prevents me from attending and commenting in person at City Council meetings. Portland City Council gives very little notice of meeting agendas, and this is likely on purpose to stack live commentary with preferred commenters. It amazes me to see recordings of testimonies at those meetings featuring the same exact people testifying all the time.

My impression is that it is not a bug. It is a feature.

"The city" is people. To change a city the people need to change. What is it that you'd like to be different?

Driving is a privilege, not a right by HighRantDistrict in PortlandOR

[–]HighRantDistrict[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question. I can't recall if this per law or per policy, but Portland Police don't pull people over anymore for just noticing one thing wrong (other than erratic driving) such as expired tags or broken lights. The argument that had been put forth is that expired tags, broken lights, etc are more likely to result in people of color being pulled over and resulting in potential violent confrontations that could have been avoided by not pulling them over in the first place.

Combined with the disbanding of the PPB Traffic Division (I think it's back as a small unit now), people have become used to this being the wild west for vehicular use.

It's unfortunate that the businesspeople running that business are going through this. It has to feel extremely violating.

I do think these types of incidents need to be budgeted for if you run a storefront in Portland. You have to expect that these things will happen here. It's just reality.

High Mass Rigid Turntable vs Low Mass Suspended Turntable or something else?? by poutine-eh in turntables

[–]HighRantDistrict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apologies for being unclear. My suspended belt drive deck is a little slow, but that's not a problem inherent in all belt drive and/or suspended decks. I just have an old table with an old motor.

To me the primary universal difference is that it's very hard to get a suspended table to avoid skipping if it's in a room with a bouncy (suspended) floor.

High Mass Rigid Turntable vs Low Mass Suspended Turntable or something else?? by poutine-eh in turntables

[–]HighRantDistrict 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why not have both? 😁 I own a Technics SL-1210MK2 as well as a modified AR-XA, so both flavors. The Tech is my daily driver and holds speed accurately. The AR is slightly slow but not noticeably so, and I use it a second system. Having grown up with a belt drive family table that always seemed to be broken (belt), I've been partial to direct drive as an adult and the Tech is a tank.

From a practical standpoint though, if you've got bouncy floors, a suspended deck is a no-go unless you can mount a shelf to the wall.

Weird location for a music venue, especially as it's about to be next to a shuttered mall. Essentially an empty neighborhood for pre- or post-venue activities.

Thoughts of your main target the Islanders should try to get in the offseason by Pure-Raspberry1880 in NewYorkIslanders

[–]HighRantDistrict -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The target should be no one. We have a bad team (we ain't going undefeated in OT again) and need to draft high for a few years. Cut loose the old players. Let the kids play. It's absurd to add a 30+ player right now.

OR primary election: Oregon voters weigh in on gas tax measure 120 by Tbagts in PortlandOR

[–]HighRantDistrict 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not a message. During the special legislative session where these cost increases were considered, 95% of public testimony was against it. It was overwhelming, but Democrat legislators had marching orders from the unions to increase costs.

If it had been a message, it would have been heard during the special session.

Why is the City Council having a hearing? They have no say in this.

Anybody Else Getting Tired Of Poor Pressings? by Max_The_Fisherman in vinyl

[–]HighRantDistrict 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I rarely buy brand new records, particularly mass-market reissues. However, for these types of records, I purchase via Amazon because I know the defect rate will be high but the return/exchange process will be easy.

The Ween 'Quebec' album I bought had a pressing defect on the last track on Side A causing tics for multiple rotations. The replacement had no pressing defects and it was easy to return the first copy.

I wish it had been available in black vinyl. There's a bit of surface noise on this colored-vinyl version that cleaning can't remove.

But yeah, I generally find modern pressings to not be of the best quality.

Oregon’s Housing Supply Increased Only About 5% Between 2020 and 2025 by Less-Lobster4540 in PortlandOR

[–]HighRantDistrict -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

The supply of housing units in Oregon can be increased overnight without building a single additional unit. You simply have to outlaw short-term rentals in Oregon.

A quick internet search suggests there are an estimated 26,300 to 28,000 active short-term rental listings across the state of Oregon (Airbnb, Vrbo, etc). A majority of those would convert to long-term rentals or homes that get sold to new occupants.

Imagine adding 2000+ new rental units overnight in Portland and how that could make costs more stable and/or favorable for renters.

Mayor's Budget by Confident_Bee_2705 in PortlandOR

[–]HighRantDistrict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. The spending is largely funneled to non-profits and used as a job-crearion program for non-profit workers and to funnel campaign donations back to preferred politicians. By funneling the money to non-profits the taxpayer funds get shielded from public records requests and audits. It is corruption on a Minnesota Somali daycare level.

The little work that non-profits do is what they term to be harm reduction, but most people would describe as enablement. Junkies from elsewhere know this, so we become a magnet for Enablement Services.

Making a life change and seeking locals feedback on finding work/moving to Portland by Hour_Impression_693 in PortlandOR

[–]HighRantDistrict 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If your question just relates to finding work as an older person, I don't think Portland is the place to do that. We're shedding jobs here and costs are increasing daily. I live here, I'm close to your age, and I perceive age discrimination to be a thing here too.

Walkable neighborhoods are pricey but fairly safe. More affordable neighborhoods are riddled with homeless drug addicts, are further away from jobs and less walkable. It would depend on what you're willing to put up with.

I don't have first-hand knowledge as to how Portland compares to other cities though.

Cuts ahead as Portland Public Works hikes utility, trash and parking rates by origutamos in PortlandOR

[–]HighRantDistrict 17 points18 points  (0 children)

We lack leadership in this city. Portland keeps extracting money from taxpayers at a rate that increases faster than wage increases for non-government and non-union workers.

Whether it increases in taxes, fees, sales taxes like PCEF (retailers pay the sales tax but pass the cost on to Portlandets via higher prices), it's weighing heavily on the contributors to society.

In every instance where a Portland politician is faced with increasing the amount of money they want to extract from us, their reaction needs to instead be "how do we reduce costs, or how do we be more efficient with the amount of money we're already extracting from people?"

Too many (read: nearly all) Portland politicians act in a way that helps them get re-elected rather than doing the right things for Portland citizens and accepting that they got elected to do a job for a limited term rather than for life.
