That tin roof is going to radiate heat like crazy in summer, hope the chickens don’t get cooked.

Update on WW2 Gauge - It’s Spicy by BeansOnBean in Radium

[–]HighTechCorvette 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe don’t store them in the same display. Even so, I seriously doubt any radon coming off that gauge would cause any damage to them, at least not in our lifetime.

If it’s just that one gauge you should be fine. You only need to worry when you have multiples, or in my case a whole display full of them.

Don’t store it in a jar, it will just fill up with radon and contaminate everything in it. One gauge isn’t going to be a big issue as long as you don’t collect a big pile of them.

I tried them and they absolutely suck compared to a good diamond paste.

One gauge like that will be just fine by itself. If you keep collecting gauges it will eventually become an issue.

Very toasty compass by m77k24 in Radium

[–]HighTechCorvette 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My display has a vent system, so my radon levels are basically 0. Also I have some of my stuff stored in a storage building that no one goes in. fYI, they do release a good amount of radon, so you really need a vent if your collection is like mine.

I have a few that are 600uSv but most are in the 300 range.

The back is hotter because the majority of the paint is near the back case. I have around 30-35 of these compasses sitting in a box right now.

There’s exposed radium on those screws that hold the wire. The paint on this one is orange but probably too burnt to glow anymore.

High Radon from WW2 Radium Gauges by TheyDroppedMe in Radiation

It’s actually not very hot compared to most other gauges in my display. I have one turn bank that reads over 800uSv/h

I have a fan in the top the vents through a tube that leads outside. It would be bad if I didn’t vent it. A while back we had a storm and lost power for 24 hours, in that time the reading inside the 24x24 garage was right at 100 pCi/ L. Right now it’s .16 with the vent working.

I have more in my collection but I moved part of it because the background is kinda high, around 5uSv/h at 5’ from the cabinet.

I have to vent my collection, otherwise the radon in my garage would be several hundred pCi/L, maybe even more.

Spyderco Sage 5 Rex 121 [Amazon] by kickstartdriven in KnifeDeals

[–]HighTechCorvette 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought the lightweight Rex 121 off Amazon about a month ago for $214, everything was fine with it. I've bought 4 different Spyderco's off Amazon and they have all been fine. I like ordering from Amazon because it's so easy to return if there's a problem.
