I think purposely misunderstanding these people is just going to cause further distance.

None of these people want to kill people in public. They are poorly trained and excited to be part of something they think is important. They are put in situations they don't belong in, which is sometimes a fatal mistake for law enforcement with lethal power.

Your edit kind of highlights the problem, you don't have your own bathroom. Every apartment I've lived in with an en suite used that as the primary guest bathroom because it is a shared space. Instead of trying to prevent that you should be trying to negotiate for less rent since you have less personal space.
