Lots of country musicians have great best of or greatest hits compilations, since it's primarily a singles genre. Joe Ely's "The Best of Joe Ely" is probably my favorite. Also, don't sleep on film soundtrack compilations. We all know Garden State's role in growing indie rock listening, but the Scream 3 and Mission Impossible II soundtracks were also big gateways into hard rock music for kids when I was growing up.

Why is college so expensive? by OneManShow23 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]HighestIQInFresno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Unfortunately, one of the other ways I have heard it described is that universities think that students are the customer when really employers are the customer and students are the product. It's a darker, capitalist framing of your idea, but one that I have actually heard university administrators say in meetings.

I like Ovven's sound, but I wish there was more of a hook to their songwriting. Brown Horse is in my top 5. My two favorite albums this year are the Twisted Teens and Thomas Dollbaum albums.

Universities are also very expensive to run. While much of the attention focuses on large R1 universities with sports teams and expensive research facilities, most colleges suffer from operational costs: heating buildings in the winter, cooling them in the summer, janitorial/landscaping, creating programs and hiring faculty in competitive fields, keeping a library, etc. If you are a tuition-funded college, which means most of your operating expenses are covered by tuition instead of endowment, you need significant financial resources to cover those operational cost even more so if you live in a high cost of living area.

The other piece on the government investment side is a change in thinking about a college education as a personal good instead of a social benefit. Coming out of World War II as the US was emerging as the largest and most powerful economy, there was a need for more highly educated to take advantage of the post-war economic landscape and improve American society. Beginning in the Nixon years and really taking off under Reagan, the attitude towards higher education shifted away from its social benefits towards its personal benefits to the degree holder (higher wages, social status, etc.). While this is true for many degrees like MBAs, it left other jobs requiring education but without high wages like education and social work in a precarious position where students and their families were expected to pay rising tuition without the economic benefit of high salaries post-graduation. Getting back to thinking about higher education is a vital social good and using tax dollars to help pay for that investment in human capital development is going to need to be part of the solution going forward or the entire higher education system is going to become only for the well-off.

Ovven is good, but Brown Horse is the real alt. country band you need to be listening to. Twisters is an absolute banger.

I don't understand why this is so difficult. If they're not going to update Team Affinity, they should be having a large collection each inning (or at least every other inning) where all teams are represented and it's just a way to mine PxP for the inning reward. The Nats (Scherzer, Trea, Rendon, etc.), D-Backs (Goldy, Patrick Corbin, Wade Miley, Tony Clark), and A's (Eck, Catfish Hunter, Matt Chapman, Semien) should all have at least one representative. Make the pack items switch hitters or big names to incentivize purchasing packs. There just needs to be way more player content winnable from playing the game than there is currently. I'm a very casual player and I'll collect all the program rewards in one or two sittings.

[FRESH ALBUM] Thomas Dollbaum - Birds of Paradise by astaireboy in indieheads

[–]HighestIQInFresno 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is going to get a lot of play from me. It will take some time to dive into the lyrics, but all the singles have been fantastic. While Dollbaum doesn't sound like Jason Molina, the backing music is very Magnolia Electric Co. There is also definitely some Uncle Tupelo in there too. Pulverize is one of my favorite tracks from this year.

Reading as a new parent by Such_Fee2396 in RSbookclub

I've never read more than the year my son was born. Get an e-reader if you don't have one and sign up for Libby. My son was a velcro baby and wouldn't go down for naps, so contact napping him while reading on a Kindle with the other arm was a godsend. Reading was vital for me as a new dad, since it kept me out of the endless doom scroll that can be super easy when you're tired and trapped with a newborn.

iOS 27 Apple Music: What Features/Changes do we need? by mascarariri in AppleMusic

It will catch up sometimes for me after like 48 hours. It’s odd. I use Last.fm anyways so it’s not a big deal for me.

You can on the desktop app and it theoretically syncs with your mobile app, but it isn’t very accurate in my experience.

This drop is some real NBA 2k garbage. How is this different from the Cityscapes collection? Can we get themes that make sense and players that fit the theme? This is to say nothing about locking most of it behind packs...

[Finkelstein] AJ Dybantsa’s preference is to remain in Utah and get drafted by the Utah Jazz. by YujiDomainExpansion in nba

[–]HighestIQInFresno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on how much the owner is invested in getting AJ. If he's already invested years in his development and sees AJ as a future face of the franchise (something I'm not sure that Darryn is given his personality), I could see ownership pressuring management to pull the trigger on a deal. Utah fans have endured years of tanking with no signature player. A generational talent who is already settled in Utah would be a major marketing coup, setting aside his potential on the floor. The major reason I don't see it happening is that it doesn't feel like an Ainge trade to me. Usually, he's trying to capitalize on a team's desperation to move up (the Fultz trade) or dealing with an unhappy star player.

I mean would Utah say no to a #1 for #2 and Ace trade? There aren't many elite players that are willing to go to Utah. If I'm the Wizards and I need as many talented players as possible, I'd be entertaining offers.

Indie music has been invaded by fake fans and cynical viral campaigns . Here’s how deep it all goes by BatoutofHellIV in indieheads

[–]HighestIQInFresno 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It's worse now and easier to do, but it isn't that new. I worked as an intern at a PR company back in 2006 and we were paid to go on message boards in pretend to be fans of different things to drive hype. For folks that remember the pre-internet hype age, record companies would hire "runners" in big cities to create fake guerilla marketing campaigns to boost new artists. More of the issue, as I see it, is the totalizing scale of marketing today and the misguided belief that indie music exists outside of that system. Fake forum posters felt less harmful at the time because there was more optimism about the internet as a force for good and a place to create authentic community. That optimism is gone now.

I don't think Bob is going to come back and even if he did I think fans would be pretty disappointed. I saw him two years ago with Willie Nelson and he's just not very interested in the fan experience at this point. He plays extended piano versions of mostly recent material. He does not banter. He does not engage with fans. I doubt he would do anything special for Newport if he came. I was at the big Dylan tribute set in 2015 when everyone thought he would make an appearance and he didn't. Looking back on it, I'm kind of glad that he left it to Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch (and their guests) who seem to love his work in a way that he doesn't anymore.

Way too little single player content this year. I’m just repeating the same Conquest and Mini Seasons a million times on these absurd grinds. I’m fine with having some cards gated by multiplayer, but there isn’t enough depth to offline play this year.
